VALVE SEAT GRINDER Filed June 17. 1947 RTTOR/VE'Y.
Patented Dec. 26, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to valve seat grinders the purpose being to provide a new and unique arrangement of parts whereby through rotation of one element an oscillatory movement is imparted to a grinding element.
These and other features and objects of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is an elevation showing my improved grinder.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the operative parts in perspective.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
The device as hereinafter described is particularly adaptable for use in the grinding of valve seats of a tapered form and it consists of a frame member I having parallel sides 2 and 3 apertured to receive a shaft 4. This shaft has an end portion 5 to receive a handle element for rotation thereof. The shaft is provided with a threaded end 6 on which is a nut I having a circular flange la rotatable in the frame portion 3 and a lock nut lb is provided to secure the nut 1 in place.
The shaft 4 extends through and in fixed relation with a central member, hereinafter termed oscillator, indicated generally at 8 and, as will be understood from Fig. 1, the shaft 4 extends through the oscillator 8 at an angle less than a right angle to the plane occupied by the oscillator. The shaft to be oscillated is indicated at 9 as being supported in the bottom of the frame I and the oscillator 8 is positioned Within the cvlindrical member II and the ring encloses the cylindrical member I I.
It will be observed from Figs. 1 and 2 that the shaft 4 extends through the oscillator 8 at an angle to the axis of rotation of the shaft 9 and by rotation causes the shaft 9 to oscillate in successive opposite directions. This oscillation of the ring causes the shaft 9 to be oscillated thereby oscillating the tool l2 on the shaft 9 as indicated by arrows in Fig. 2. The tool I2 is shown in full lines as being of a cone like form particularly adapted for grinding valve seats of similar form. It is to be understood that an abrasive is utilized between the oscillatable member 12 and the valve seat being operated on.
It is to be noted that a raceway for the balls I3 is provided between the oscillatable central member 8 and the outer ring In as shown in Fig. 4. The ring ID has diametrically opposed pins [4 and a yoke l has oppositely disposed eyed portions to receive the pins 14 and is attached to the shaft 9. Therefore, by rotation of the shaft 4, the oscillator member 8 is rotated thereby causing oscillation of the shaft 9 and the grinding element [2.
In the use of the device it is desirable to turn the frame element I occasionally to make certain that all parts of the element being ground are submitted to the abrading action in view of the fact that the shaft 9 may not make a complete half turn to each revolution of the shaft 4. This may be accomplished by grasping the upper end of the frame element 3 in one hand and r0- tating the shaft 4 by a crank, not here shown, on the threaded end 6 of the shaft and, by occasionally turning the frame element on the axis of the shaft 9, the abrading tool I2 is turned on its axis to insure a uniformly smooth surface of the valve seat.
From the foregoing description it is believed evident that the device embodying my invention is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction whereby the rotation of a shaft causes oscillation of another shaft.
Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A device for the purpose described, comprising a frame having parallel side members and a base, a shaft having its ends supported in the respective side members of the frame, a second shaft at a right angle to the first shaft rotatably supported in the base of the frame, means between the shafts whereby rotation of the first shaft causes an oscillation of the second shaft, said means comprising an element having a grooved cylindrical periphery, a ring like element having an inner grooved periphery positioned in parallel spaced relation with the periphery of the grooved element, the grooves providing a circular raceway, balls in the said raceway, a yoke at a right angle to the first shaft having eyed end portions, a pin on each of the diametrically opposite sides of the yoke positioned in the respective eyed ends thereof, and a grinding element at the end of the second shaft.
