INSERTER OR REMOVER FOR THUMBTACKS.
Filed Nov. 9, 1949 34 \20 i J E/ i 16 l4 Inventor Arthur 6. Hayden Patented Dec. 5, 1950 INSERTER ORREMOVER FOR THUMBTACKS Arthur C. Hayden, Nantucket, Mass, assignor of 1 thirty-three and one-third per cent to Albert Falcofsky and thirty-three and one-third per cent to Barnet Smola, both of New Bedford,
Mass.
Application November 9, 1949, Serial No. 126,287
'3 Claims.
Another object of the invention resides in the I novel construction and arrangement of parts of the device for holding a tack in a positive manner while forcing it into the material it is to be inserted in.
Still other objects reside in the provision of an inserter or remover for thumb tacks, which is strong, durable, and efficient in operation, simple to manufacture and relatively inexpensive.
These, together with the various ancillary objects of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of the tool;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, as taken along line 2-2 in Figure 1, of the inserter or remover for thumb tacks; and,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view as taken along line 3-3 in Figure 2. 1
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, generally represents the preferred embodiment of the tool comprising the present invention.
As best shown in Figure 2, a tube I2 is pro- Vided and has an end wall l4 integral with or attached thereto. The end Wall 14 is formed from a truncated section of a cone, thus having outwardly and downwardly tapering annular edge It. This end wall I4 is provided with a slot l8 extending diametrically from the annular peripheral edge it to a point past the center thereof. The tube i2 is also provided with a slot 26 therein adjacent the bottom wall or end wall 14.
A cylinder 22 is pressed fitted into the tube 2 with its annular collar 24 forming a' shoulder for spaced retention of the cylinder 22. The upper end of the cylinder 22 is provided with an upstanding portion 26 about which a handle of suitable configuration 28 is secured.
The cylinder 22 is also provided with a central recess 38 in which a coil spring 32 is emplaced. The coil spring 32 biases the upper end of the recess 39 and a ball bearing 34 slidably emplaced in the recess 30. The ball bearing 30 is of larger diameter than the height of the recess 20 or the width of the recess I8. Thusly, the ball bearing 34 cannot drop out of the recess 3]].
To insert a thumb tack in a suitable wall or the like, after putting the thumb tack in through the slots I8 and 2E! with the point extending through the slot l8, and with the head of the thumb tack in spring pressed engagement the ball bearing 34 and the upper surface of the end wall It, the device is merely pressed by means of handle 28 against the wall or the like so as to embed" the point of the tack in the wall. The device may then be removed from its encompassing relationship to the thumb tack, and the thumb tack may be then driven all the way in,
using the unslotted surface of the end wall for this purpose. To remove the thumb tack the beveled or conical edges it of the device is pressed under the thumb tack so as to engage the head of the thumb tack within the slot 20. Then, the handle need be but rotated or pulled back on to withdraw the tack.
Since from the foregoing, the construction and advantages of this inserter or remover for thumb tacks is readily apparent, further description is believed to be unnecessary However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment of tool shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A tack driving and drawing tool comprising a tube, a wall secured to one end of said tube, a slot in said wall, a cylinder secured in said tube, a receess in said cylinder, a coil spring in said recess, said coil spring urging a ball bearing in said recess outward thereof against said wall to removably retain a thumb tack between said wall and said cylinder.
2. A tack driving and drawing tool comprising a tube, a wall secured to one end of said tube, a slot in said wall extending to the peripheral edge thereof, a cylinder secured in said tube having an annular collar at one end abutting the other end of said tube, a handle secured to said cylinder, a recess in said cylinder, a coil spring in said recess, said coil spring urging a ball bearing in said recess outwardthereof against said wall to removably retain a thumb tack between said wall and said cylinder with said ball bearing spring pressed against the top of the thumb tack.
3. A tack driving and drawing tool comprising a tube, a wall secured to one end of said tube, a slot in said Wall extending to the peripheral edge thereof, a cylinder secured in said tube having an annular collar at one end abutting the other end of said tube, a handle secured to said cylinder, a recess in said cylinder, resilient means in said recess, said resilient means urging a ball bearing in said recess outward thereof against said wall to removably retain a thumb tack be- 4 tween said wall and said cylinder with said ball bearing resiliently pressed against the top of the thumb tack.
