LIQUID-FUEL INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,216, dated February r7', 1882,

To all ywhom it may concern Beitknown that I, FREDERICK A. MEYER, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented an Improved Liquid-Fuel In- 5 jector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices that are designed for the injection, in combination with ajet ot' steam, otpetroleum or other liquid fuel into furnaces or lire-boxes.
xo The invention. consists of a double hemispherical covered vessel, having a steam-space between its outer and inner shell, provided with an internal diaphragm to effect the better min` gling of the steam and liquid fuel, with a rer 5 ceptacle for receivingthe excess of oil or liquid fuel that may at any time enter the inject/or, and provided with a relief-pipe for the escape of such of the oil that is there vaporized, and provided with suitable discharge-nozzle, with '2o valved oil and steam supply pipes, and with an adjustable steam-pipe that controls by valvular action the admission of the liquid fuel or oil into said injector, all of which will be hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, A represents the injector,
of hemisphericalshape, consisting of two hemispherical shells, A A2, screwed together, the one outside and over the other, with a space, l), between them, the outer shell, A', being screwed upon the annular shoulder ct of the inner shell, A2.
A cap, B, is screwed iirmly down over the rim of the shell A2, against the shoulder thereof, and suitable packing, if necessary, is in- 40 troduced between them to make a tight joint. A chamber, c, is formed in one side of this cap B, for the introduction of the nozzle C, that is screwed thereon, and made more secure by a lock-nut, d, so as to project laterally from the injector A, and also for aifording a direct con-` nection between the interior of the injector A and its nozzle O.
A pipe, D, having connected toit a steamsupply pipe, D', and provided with suitable valves, gg, has one end entered into the steam- 5o space b of the injector A, to heat and va-porize the oil that may fall into its reservoir It, which is formed by a perforated diaphragm, E, that is fixed within said injector A, above its bottom. The other end of the pipe D is connected by a screw-bushing, L, with the top of' the vertical tubular conductor F, whose reduced or contracted end is screwed centrally into the cap B, and communicates with the interior of the injector A.y Said conductor F receives the 6o liquid fuel through a pipe, G, connected toits side, and provided with a valve, I, from some suitable reservoir.
Screwed perpendicularly through the bushing k is a smallpipe, H,havin g a reduced conical tip, m, secured thereon. This pipe H can be primarily adjusted with its tip m at a suitable distance above the contracted end of the conductor F, to regulate in a measure-the flow of liquid fuel into said injector A, and can 7o be afterward relatively adjusted, so as in effect to have a valvular action upon the fuelsupply pipe Gr by turning the bushing 7c, which has a right and left hand screw, and is provided with a collar, k', to which a wrench may 75 be applied, so as to close or open the end of the conductor F, and thereby regulate the iow of fuel from pipe G.
Steam being applied through the pipes Dl D, and the liquid fuel being turned on in the pipe 3o G, the steam and fuel together enter the conductor F, whence the steam forces the fuel in fine Spray upon the diaphragm K, that is suspended within the injector A from the cap B by rods m., and said steam, in combination with the heat imparted by the steam entering the steam-space b, vaporizes said liquid fuel, and, mingled therewith, issues under pressure through a passage, a, in the cap o, into the nozzle C, and thence into the furnace or tire-box 9o to which this device may be applied. What liquid fuel enters the injector A and does not at once escape with the steam through the nozzle O falls upon the perforated diaphragm E, and thence into the receptaclevh, where a portion of it vaporizes and gradually passes off through the opening in said diaphragm E and out at the nozzle C, while the remainder is forced by the pressure of steam within said injector A up the pipe o, into and out of the nozzle C.
Any condensed steam in the steam-space b may be drawn o' through the cock p.
This injector is simple, durable, and effective, and can be applied at small cost to any furnaces or tire-boxes. It is not liable to get out of order, and its fuel-feed can be-adj usted withthe utmost nicety.
Having thus described iny invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A liquid-fuel injector constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consistingofdoubleheuiispherical shell A A2, provided with cap B, and nozzle C, diaphragm K, conductor F, adjustable bushing k, and conically tipped pipe H, arranged as set forth.
2. In a liquid-fuel injector, the combination,
with the double shell A A2, having a steamspace, b, of the receptacle h, formed by the daphragm E, substantially as herein shown and described, said receptacle being designed to receive the excess of fuel entering the injector, as set forth.
3. In a liquid-fuel injector, the combination, with the receptacle h, and diaphragm E, and double shell A A2, of the escape-ppe o, substantall y as and for the purpose described.
4. In aliquid-fuel injector, the combination, with vthe cap B, provided with chamber c, communicating With the double shell A A2 and the interiorof the injector, of the nozzle C, substantially as herein shown and described.
