HAND-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,004, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed September 5, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. CLARK, of Windsor Looks, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hand-Trucks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide cheap, efficient, and easily-operated means for preventing backward movementofhand-trucks while the load is being placed upon them.
My invention consists of a spring-actuated holder or clamp placed upon the shaft or axle ofthe truck, said holder or clamp being adapted to be pressed down by the foot of the user to engage with the floor while the box, barrel, or other load is being tipped or pulled back or otherwise placed upon the truck.
The invention also consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination ofthe parts of the device, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a hand-truck having my improved clamp or holder. Fig.2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line a x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on line y g of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 isa detailed elevation of the holder or clamp.
The frame A, the wheels B B, and the axle or shaft C of the truck are of ordinary construction.
Upon the center of the axle or shaftis placed the swinging clamp or holder D, which is adapted to be pressed down to engage with the floor by the foot of the user, as shown in Fig. 3, to hold the truck whileit is beingloaded.
In order to prevent all danger of the clamp or holder slipping when the same is held in contact wit-h the floor, I provide the end of the clamp or holder with the strip of rubber d, as shown in Figs. 2 and3; and to cause the clamp or holder to be elevated from the floor after the foot has been removed, so that it will not interfere with the movement of the truck in either direction for moving the load, I provide the other end being made fast to the clamp or holder, as shown at i, Figs. 1, 2, and 4:. This collar 0 is secured upon the shaft or axle between the perforated arms or sleeves d d of the clamp on holder, which arms or sleeves are loose upon the shaft or axle, and thus the collar serves at the same time to prevent lateral movement of the clamp or holder upon the shaft, easy vertical movement of the clamp or holder to its different positions upon theshaft being permitted by the loose sleeves d d,- and this collar 0 is provided on its upper side with the stop 6, which serves to prevent the clamp or holder being thrown too far forward by the spring a when the foot of the user is removed from the clamp. The strip of rubber d is held in place in the end of the clamp or holder by means of the plate f, secured to the clamp D by the screw f, the ends of the plate and clamp being formed with the undercut projections it h, for taking hold upon the rubber, as shown in the drawings. The collar cis secured upon the shaft or axle so that the normal position of the clamp will be about as shown in Fig. 2, convenient for placing the foot upon it when the truck is tipped forward to receive the load, as shown in said figure.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The spring-actuated clamp or holder D, placed upon the shaft or axle C of the truck, and adapted to be pressed down to engage with the floor, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The clamp or holder D, placed loosely upon the shaft or axle C, in combination with the spring a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The collar 0, formed with the stop 0, in combination with the clamp D and the spring a, substantially as described.
4. The clamp D, provided with the rubber d, in combination with the collar 0 and spring a, substantially as described. v
5. The clamp D, formed with the sleeves d d and provided with the rubber d, in combination with the collar 0 and the spring a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
