9 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for cutting and punching material and the primary object of the present invention is to provide an electrically operated cutting and punching machine so designed as to facilitate the same to be employed as a cutter independently of its punching operation or for usein simultaneously cutting and punching material such as cloth or the like in a convenient manner.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide an electrically operated cutting and punching machine including a reciprocable puncher and embodying novel and improved means for actuating the puncher to effectively and efficiently produce openings in material such as cloth or the like.
A further object of the present invention is'to provide an electrically operated cutting and punching machine including a rotary cutting element having cutting edges and a novel and improved stationary cutting plate having a cutting edge that cooperates with the cutting edges of the rotary cutting element.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a combination cloth cutting and punching machine that is small and compact in structure, simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein'like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the combination cutter and puncher constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the present invention taken substantially on the plane of section line 22 of Figure Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 5;

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral It! represents a substantially cylindrical head the rear end of which is open to receive the forward end l2 of a preferably cylindrical handle M having an outer gripping surface It.
Extending forwardly from the forward end I2 of the handle 14 is a pair of spaced parallel ears l8 that are integrally formed with the handle and which are pivotally mounted on a pivot pin and driven shaft 28) removably carried by the head It.
Integrally formed with the head Ill and projecting forwardly therefrom is an upper fixed jaw 22 and a companion lower fixed jaw 24 between which there is provided an opening 26.
Mounted within the housing and disposed between a pair of diametrically opposed lugs 28 integrally formed with the inner periphery of the handle i4 is an electric motor 31! having a drive shaft 32. The motor 38 is removably secured in the handle by a fastener 34.
Extending through a resilient sleeve 36 carried by the closed outer end of the handle 14 is a pair of conductive wires 38 that are connected to a switch 40 secured to the handle l4 and which are then connected to the motor.
Fixed on the driven shaft 20 is an annular gear 42 that engages a worm gear 44 fixed on the drive shaft 32 whereby the driven shaft 20 will be actuated or rotated by the drive shaft32.
Mounted on the driven shaft 20, adjacent the gear 42, is the hub portion 46 of a cutter blade having a plurality of radially disposed cutting arms 48 that are provided with cutting edges 50 which cooperate with the cutting edge 5! of a fixed or stationary plate 52 that is removably secured to the lower jaw 24 adjacent aligned cutter blade receiving slots or openings 5 3 formed in the jaws 22 and 24 Freely rotatable on the driven shaft 20 is a cam 56 that is disposed adjacent a friction plate or washer 58 that is fixed on the shaft 2!! by any suitable means.
Depending from the inner periphery of the portion I2 is a bracket Bil that pivotally supports the central portion of a lever 62, one end 64 of which projects outwardly from an arcuate slot 66 provided in the end portion I2. This lever is provided with a terminal bifurcation v6B that is posie,
tioned between the spaced flanged portions I of a collar 12 that is slidably positioned on the driven shaft 20.
Slidably engaging an aperture I4 provided in the upper jaw 22 is a headed pin 16, the inner end of which supports a substantially U shaped bracket I8 between the legs of which there is pivoted the central portion of a lever 80. A coil spring 82 embraces the pin 76 and is biased between the jaw 22 and the bracket I8 for normally urging the pin I6 into the jaw 22 as shown best in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings.
The forward end of the lever 80 pivotally supports a punch or needle 84 that is guided in an opening 86 provided in the jaw 22. This needle 84 extends into and out of an aperture 88 provided in a guide plate 90 that is recessed in the jaw 24. A coil spring 92 embraces the needle 84 and is biased between the lever 80 and the jaw 22 for normally retaining the needle in a raised or retracted position, as shown in Figure 2.
Fixed to the rear end of the lever 80 is a link 94 that supports a roller 96 that is adapted to align and engage the cam 56 when the latter is actuated toward the plate 58 by the lever 62.
It is preferred that a spring (not shown) act upon the lever 62 so that the collar 12 will normally be spaced relative to the cam 56 whereby only the cutter 48 will be rotated.
In practical use of the present invention, cloth is fed into the opening 26 whereby the same will be out by the cutting arms 48. When it is desirable to also punch the cloth or material, the lever 62 is actuated so that the collar 72 will force the cam 56 into engagement with the friction plate 58 and the said cam will then rotate with the driven shaft 20. As the cam 56 rotates, the same engages the roller 96, imparting a reciprocating motion to the lever 80 and needle 84 so that the needle will move into and out of the aperture 88 in plate 90, as shown in Figure 3.
Reference is now directed to Figure '7, wherein there is disclosed the present invention in slightly modified form. In this embodiment, the numeral I00 represents the driven shaft on which there is fixed a beveled gear I02.
Rotatable on the shaft I00 is a further driven shaft or sleeve I04 on which there is fixed a beveled gear I06 that is oppositely disposed relative to the beveled gear I02.
The driven shaft I00 supports a spoked cutter I08 that opposes a complementary spoked cutter H0 mounted on the sleeve I04. These cutters I08 and H0 are rotatable in opposed slots II2 provided in the spaced upper jaw and lower jaw of the head I0.
Suitably supported for rotation in the handle I4 is a shaft I I4 that supports a beveled gear I I6 at one end that engages the gears I02 and I06. The remaining end of the shaft I I4 supports an annular gear II8 that engages an annular gear I20 mounted on the drive shaft 32 of the electric motor 30.
Obviously, as the shaft 32 rotates, the shafts I 00 and I04 will be rotated in opposite directions and the cutters I08 and I in will also be rotated in an opposite direction.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary. 1
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An electrically operated cloth punching machine comprising a head open at one end and including an upper and lower jaw, a handle engaging the open end of the head, a driven shaft connecting the head to the handle, an electric motor mounted in the handle including a drive shaft, means operatively connecting the drive shaft to the driven shaft, a slidable pin carried b the upper jaw, means urging the pin to a lowered position, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to the slidable pin, a punch pivoted to one end of the lever, said upper jaw having an opening slidably receiving the punch, resilient means for urging the punch to a raised position, a roller carried by the remaining end of the lever, a cam slidably carried by the driven shaft engaging the roller to actuate the pivotal lever, a fixed friction plate carried by the driven shaft normally spaced from the cam, a slidable collar carried by the driven shaft, and a lever carried by the handle for moving the collar into engagement with the cam and the cam into engagement with the friction plate.
2. An electrically operated punching machine comprising a head open at one end, a handle positioned in the open end of the head, a driven shaft connecting the handle to the head, an electric motor mounted in the handle having a drive shaft, a reciprocable punch, means carried by the driven shaft for imparting a reciprocation to the punch, means operatively connecting the driven shaft to the drive shaft for rotation thereby, said head including a pair of spaced jaws,
said jaws being spaced to receive an article to' be punched, and a stationary plate carried by one of said jaws and having an opening for receiving said punch.
3. An electrically operated punch comprising a head open at one end, a handle positioned in the open end of the head, a driven shaft forming a pivotal connection between the handle and the head, an electric motor mounted in the handle having a drive shaft, means operatively connecting the driven shaft to the drive shaft for rotation thereby, said head including a pair of spaced jaws, a punch carried by one of the jaws, means carried by the driven shaft for actuating said punch, and means normally retaining the punch in an inactive position.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said means carried by the driven shaft for actuating said punch includes a cam rotatably carried by the driven shaft, a friction wheel carried by the driven shaft and rotatable therewith, and means for urging the cam against the friction wheel for rotation of the cam with the driven shaft.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said last-mentioned means includes a slidable collar carried by the driven shaft, and a lever carried by the handle for sliding the collar on the driven shaft.
6. The combination of claim 2 wherein said tric motor mounted in the handle having a drive shaft, a cutter fixedly carried by the driven shaft, means operatively connecting the driven shaft to the drive shaft for rotation thereby, said head including a pair of spaced jaws, said jaws having opposed slots in which said cutter is rotatable, a stationary plate carried by one of said jaws and having a cutting edge cooperating with said cutter, a slidable support pin carried by one of said jaws, a pivotal lever carried by said slidable pin, a punch needle carried by one end of said pivotal lever, a roller carried by the remaining end of the pivotal lever, a cam slidably carried by the driven shaft, a fixed friction plate carried by the driven shaft normally spaced from the cam, and means for urging said cam into engagement with the friction plate for rotation of said cam with said driven shaft and reciprocation of said punch needle.
8. A combination cutter and puncher comprising a head having an upper fixed jaw and a lower fixed jaw spaced relative to the upper jaw, said head being open at one end, a handle engaging the open end of the head, a driven shaft pivotally connecting the head to the handle, an electric motor mounted in the handle and having a drive shaft, means operatively connecting the driven shaft to the, drive shaft, a cutter carried by the driven shaft for rotation therewith, said cutter having cutting edges, a stationary plate carried by the lower cutting jaw and having a cutting edge cooperating with the cutting edges of the cutter, a reciprocable punch carried by the upper jaw, said upper jaw having a guide opening slidably engaging the punch, a receiving plate carried by the lower jaw and having an opening for receiving the punch, means normally retaining the punch in an inactive position, and means carried by the driven shaft for reciprocating the punch.

A combination cutter and puncher comprising ahead having an upper fixed jaw and a lower fixed jaw spaced relative to the upper jaw, said head being open at one end, a handle engaging the open end of the head, a driven shaft pivo-tally connecting the head to the handle, an electric motor mounted in the handle and having a drive shaft, means operatively connecting the driven shaft to the drive shaft, a cutter carried by the driven shaft for rotation therewith, said cutter having cutting edges, a stationary plate carried by the lower cutting jaw and having a, cutting edge cooperating with the cutting edges of the cutter, a slidable pin carried by the upper jaw, resilient means urging the slidable pin to a lowered position, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to said slidable pin, a cloth puncher pivoted to one end of said lever, said upper jaw having a guide opening slidably engaging the puncher, a spring for urging the puncher in a raised position, a roller carried by the remaining end of the lever, a cam rotatably carried by the driven shaft for engaging the roller, a friction plate fixed on the driven shaft normally spaced from the cam, a collar slidabl carried by the driven shaft, and a lever for urging the collar into engagement with the cam for rotation of the cam with the driven shaft.
