Description

Patented Sept. 5, 1950 GLASS-SUPPORTING MEANS Carl L. Rusch, Oconto, Wis, assignor of one-half to Arthur Swaer, Pensaukee, Wis.
Application October 9, 1946, Serial No. 102541 This invention relates to glass-supporting or fastening means. More particularly, it relates to improved means for supporting or fastening the glass plates used in greenhouses.
One advantage, among others, of my invention is that a, way is provided to use metal sas bars inexpensively and practically.
Heretofore, all metal sash bars have had to be put through a die to make the glass fit. This is not necessary in my structure, because any size glass can be used that will fit the sash bars. One of the advantages resulting from this is that the over-all cost is reduced by at least one-half.
On all the metal sash bars provided for holding glass plates heretofore, the cost has been so great as to make their use prohibitive. My arrangement provides for the first time a metal glass fastener which is practical. The fastener of my invention will effectively shed water and allow for contraction and expansion.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to th accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the supporting device or one of the fastening elements.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 55 of Fi 4.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the retainer.
Fig. 7 is a view at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in which I have shown the preferred form for the purpose of illustrating the principle of my invention, I have shown a sash 5, having an upper vertical leg 6, a vertical lower leg 7, a left horizontal leg 8, and a right horizontal leg 9, generally forming an outline of a cross in transverse section.
It will be understood that as many of these as will be needed or desired may be used.
The first step is for the plate glass It to be laid upon the upper surface of the leg 3 of the sash 5 and the upper surface of the leg 9 of another similar sash 5.
The next step is to place in position a support ll, having a U-shaped form, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 7.
The support II has a lower leg l2 and an upper leg l3, also a vertical leg M.
The next step is to place another pane of glass l5 in place, as shown in Fig. 1. Thereafter, a, retainer 5, having a flange I1, is placed 3 Claims. (01. 189--l8i in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 with said flange along respective edges of both the panes l0 and I5.
The retainer has a slot I8, and the retainer is adapted to be dropped so that the vertical leg I4 extends through the slot [8.
By means of a crimping tool, the portion 20 of the support H, which extends above the retainer I6, is sheared, as at I9, from a portion 2! of the leg M, forming a U-shaped upper end of the leg l4, when viewed from the top, to-wit: There being bent portions 22 and 23 for clinching said support to said retainer. In other words, bent portion 22 is sheared away from the upper part of the leg 2|, and bent portion 23 is also sheared away from the upper part 2| of the leg [4.
It will be observed that the retainer It has an offset ledge 24 which fits along the exposed overlapping edge of the pane l5.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variation and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device adapted for use in securing overlapping plates of glass in position on a sash bar having an outstanding leg, said device comprising a clip having a U-shape portion adapted to receive said leg and an upstanding member integrally joined to one side of said U-shape portion and adapted to overlie one side edge of one of said plates of glass adjacent to the overlap, said upstanding member being formed with slits extending inwardly from the side edges thereof to define lugs at the free end of said upstanding member, and a retaining member adapted to overlie said plates of glass at said overlap and formed with a slot adjacent to a side edge thereof and through which said upstanding member of said clip passes, the lugs at the free end of said upstanding member being deformable after passage through said slot into a position maintaining said clip and plates of glass assembled on said leg.
2. In a device adapted for use in securing overlapping plates of glass in position on a sash bar having an outstanding leg, said device comprising a clip having a U-shape portion adapted to receive said leg and an upstanding member integrally joined to one side of said U-shape portion and adapted to overlie one side edge of one of said plates of glass adjacent to the overlap, said upstanding member having a portion at the upper free end thereof which is deformable, and a retaining member formed with an intermediate shoulder adapted to be engaged by the edge of the uppermost of said plates of glass at the overlap, and a slot adjacent the side edge thereof, said slot receiving said upstanding member with the deformable portion at the free end thereof bent into retaining position after said upstanding member has been passed through said slot.
3. In a device adapted for use in securingover lapping plates of glass in position ion a sash =bar having an outstanding leg, said device comprising a clip having a U-shape portion consisting of upper and lower side legs and a bend and an upstanding member integrally joined to @Said upper side leg, said U-shape portion receivin 4 the leg of said sash bar with the side edge of the latter engaging said bend, and with said upstanding member engaging the side edge of one of said plates of glass and extending thereabove, that portion of said upstanding member that is disposed above said plate of glass being deformable, and a retaining member overlying said plates of glass at said overlap and having a slot at a side edge receiving said upstanding member with the deformable portion of said upstanding member bent into retaining position after passage through said slot.
