WINDOW SILL PROTECTOR Filed Nov. 27, 1945 ARNETT D. WATERS SUSAN P. WATERS Patented June 6, 1950 WINDOW SILL PROTECTOR.
Arn'ett D Waters and Susan P'. Waters,- Savannah, Ga.
ApplicationNovember 27, 1945,. Serial'No. 6.31',028.
This invention relates to a c'ombined'sillpro t'ector' and reflector for window frames;
An object of this invention is to provide a' protecting cover for a windowsillwhich can bemade out of suitable material, such as plastic or the like, and provided with desired reflecting characistics so that sunlight may berefiected'therefrom onto the ceiling of the room.
Another object. of this invention is toprovide" a sill. protector of this kind which can be cl'amped" over the sill of' the windowandextendeol' downwardly over the facing strip or apron on the inner' side of the Window frame.
A further objectof' thisinvention is to provide a protecting coverfor a sill which is of waterproof construction, and, may be formed of relatively thin materialsuch as plastic or the like, which willprotect the finish of the sill and at the same time may reflectlight rays. from the sun.
A further object of this invention is to provide acover of this kind which may bemade. either in opaque or transparent or translucent form; and: may be madefrorn plastic material or the like.
With the foregoing objects in view, and others which-may hereinafter appear, the invention-con sists of the novel construction; combination and arrangement of parts, but it will be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention, as claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a sill protector constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view, taken through the protector, showing the protector mounted on a window sill.
Figure 3 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a modified form of this invention.
Referring to the drawing the numeral it designates an elongated fiat sheet of material of a resilient nature such as plastic as heretofore specified, which is adapted to be horizontally disposed, and engaged over the upper side of a window sill H to form a protective cover or shield with a depending outer edge flange I2. The elongated member lil is of a length to extend between the vertical side frame members I3 of the window frame, and the outer edge of the horizontal member lil has extending downwardly therefrom a flange or clamping member l2.
Initially the flange i2 is disposed on a substantially acute angle relative to the upper member III so that when in applied position the flange [2 will tightly resiliently and frictionally clamp against the outer edge M of the seal 1 l.
The inneredge portion-- ofthe protective shield cover member H1 is formed with a depending-or downward-1y extending flange It molded or pressed to form a rounded edge portion or chamnel which is engageable"over and conformsto the inneredge of" the-sil1 H; and an outwardlyextending between portion orfiange member I'6- ex tends from: the lower' edge ofthedepending;- or rolledflange 15, andis engageab'le resiliently-and frictionally beneath the sill H on the-inner-side of the window structure'to effectively hold the cover or-shieldi'n conforming position in coniunc t'ion-with-thedependingfiange lil The lower hor-i'zontal -member I 6 has'dep'endi'n'g therefrom at its outer edge; air apromon facing covering plate H which is" adaptedto extend across andcoverthe inner-verticalside of afaeing stripl-8--' forming part of the window structure over the plaster-or otherwall beneaththesiil i la Preferably'the lower; outwardly extending mem'-- her it is disposed on an: upward= and outward inclination sothat when the lower member Ni is engaged. Withthe inwardly extending: porti'om ofthe' sill I l; the lower member lfi will -form a: clamp for resiliently and frictionally gripping-and tightly= holding the innerporti'om of the upper cover-ing Mi -against the uppersurface-oft the sill ll, especially in conjunction with the flange 12.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is disclosed a modified form of this invention. An upper sill covering member I9 is adapted to engage over the upper surface of the sill, and is formed at its inner edge with a depending member 20 like member l5 engageable over the inner edge of the sill, and a lower clamping member 2| corresponding to member I6 extends outwardly from the depending member 20.
The clamping member 2! has depending therefrom a facing covering plate or apron 22 which is adapted to be vertically disposed and to cover the inner surface of the facing strip which is positioned beneath the sill.
In the present form the cover I9 is formed at the opposite ends thereof with channel extensions 23, which are narrower than the covering member i9, and are engageable over the outwardly extended end portions of the sill which extend beyond the vertical sides of the Window frame. The outer edge of the covering member [9 is formed with a right angularly disposed depending flange 24 which engages against the outer edge of the sill, and a horizontally outwardly disposed plate portion or flange 25 extends from the lower edge of the flange 24.
The plate portion or flange 25 is adapted to engage the upper surface of the lower horizontal frame member forming the window frame. and the opposite ends of the plate portion or flange 25 are formed with a pair of notches 26 within which the parting stops are adapted to engage. The plate portion or flange 25, at the outer edge portion thereof, is also formed with notches 21 within which the outer sash stop is adapted to engage.
We claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a protector for a window sill comprising a unitary member of sheet material formed to have a horizontally extending main body part for overlying the upper surface of the sill, and an outer part which depends downwardly from the outer edge of said body part, and an inner part which extends downwardly from the inner edge of said body part and then outwardly to form a U-shaped clamping portion having its open end directed outwardly so as to be engageable with the inner edge portion of the sill, said outer part being adapted to engage the outer side of the window frame.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a protector for a window sill comprising a unitary sheet of plastic material formed to have a horizontally extending main body part for overlying the upper surface of the sill, an outer part which depends downwardly from the outer edge of said body part, and an inner part which extends downwardly from the inner edge of said body part and then outwardly to form a U-shaped clamping portion having its open end directed outwardly so as to be engageable with the inner edge portion of the sill, said outer part being adapted to engage the outer edge of the window sill.
3. A protector for a window sill, comprising a unitary member Of sheet material formed to have a substantially horizontally disposed main body part and an outer part which depends downwardly from the outer edge of said body part and then outwardly in substantial parallelism with said body part, and an inner part which extends downwardly from the inner edge of said body part and then outwardly to form a U-shaped clamping portion having its open end directed outwardly so as to be engageable with the inner edge portion of the sill, said outer part being provided with notches in its opposite ends adapted to receive the parting stops of the window.
4. A protector for a window sill of a window frame, which sill extends inwardly of the window frame and retaining wall of a building having a window opening in which the frame is fitted and having end portions extended outwardly beyond the vertical sides of the window frame and a facing strip or apron depending below the sill at the inner side of the wall spaced from the inner edge of the sill comprising a single sheet of resilient light reflecting plastic material formed with a substantially horizontally disposed main body part to rest on the top of the sill and an outer part depending downwardly from the outer edge of said body part to engage over the outer edge of the sill and then outwardly from the bottom edge of said depending part in substantial parallelism with said body part, an inner part extending downwardly from the lnner edge of said body part and then outwardly to form a U-shaped clamping portion closed at its inner side and open at its outer side so as to receive and frictionally engage under the inner edge portion of the sill and having its ends extending beyond the ends of the body part to engage over the outwardly extended end portions of the sill which extend beyond the vertical Sides of the window frame, said outer part being provided with notches in its opposite ends adapted to receive the parting strips and outer stops of the window frame.
