Description
Patented May 30, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OVERHEATING WARNING SIGNAL FOR VEHICLE RADIATORS 3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to radiators for vehicles and to an overheating signal therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide in combination with the overflow pipe of a vehicle radiator, a signal which is sounded when steam is generated in the radiator.
Another object of this invention is to provide as an attachment for the overflow pipe of a radiator, a signal which is sounded by discharge of steam through the overflow pipe, the signal including means whereby water will ravitatingly pass therethrough.
A further object of this invention is to provide a signal device of this kind which can be attached to the lower end of an overflow pipe without altering the pipe, and at the same time providing an extension for the pipe to discharge the water below the motor.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a signal device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Figure 1 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral ID designates generally a, radiator of conventional construction used in the cooling system of a motor vehicle, which has extending vertically downwardly therefrom an overflow pipe II. In order to provide a means whereby the driver of the vehicle may be appraised of the overheating of the radiator, I have provided a signal device which includes a U-shaped tube l2.
The tube 12 has one side [3 thereof connecting with the lower end of the pipe H by means of a flexible connector M in the form of a short length of rubber tube. The other side l5 of the U-shaped member I 2 has connected thereto a whistle generally designated as l6. The whistle I6 includes a tubular lower part H which is connected with the side l5 of the U-shaped member l2 by means of a flexible connector 18. The upper end of the tube I1 is flattened as indicated at l9 and there is an obtusely disposed tubular extension 2|] extending from the upper end of the flattened portion I9.
A slot 21 is cut through a portion of the joint between the flattened portion l9 and the upper or cap portion 20 so that when steam rises through the flattened portion 19 the exhaust of the steam through the slot 2| will produce a sound. The upper end of the cap member 20 is closed by means of a plate 22.
In order to provide for draining of the water from the bight portion 23 of the U-shaped member 12, I have provided a depending nipple 24 and a flexible tube 25 may be connected with the nipple 24 and extended to a suitable point for discharge of the water.
In the use of this device, the signal member is connected by means of the flexible connector 14 to the lower end of the overflow pipe H. When the radiator overflows, and prior to the time that steam is generated, the water will drain out through the drain nipple 24 and through the hose 25. When the steam is generated, the steam may be partially discharged through the drain nipple 24, but a substantial portion of the steam will rise upwardly through the whistle 16 so as to produce a sound which will be sufficient to warn the driver of the vehicle that the engine has unduly overheated.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A signal for securing to the lower end of the overflow pipe of a vehicle radiator comprising a U-shaped tube, coupling means connecting one side of said tube to the lower end of said pipe, a whistle carried by the other side of said tube, and a tubular drain member depending from the bight of said tube and adapted to drain liquid flowing into the bight of said tube.
2. A signal for securing to the lower end of the overflow pipe of a vehicle radiator comprising a U-shaped tube, a flexible coupling connecting one side of said tube with the lower end of said pipe, a whistle secured to and extending upwardly of the other side of said tube, and means draining liquids entering the bight of said tube.
3. A signal for securing to the lower end of the overflow pipe of a vehicle radiator comprising a U-shaped tube, a flexible coupling connecting one side of said tube with the lower end of said pipe, a whistle, a flexible coupling securing said whistle to the other side of said tube, and a drain tube dependingly carried by the bight of said first named tube.
