to Barber-Colman Company,
corporation of Illinois Application February '1, 1949, Serial No. 74,928
3 Claims.
The invention pertains in general to twisting machines of the type in which paired threads to be wound upon power driven bobbins are supplied from larger yarn masses or cheeses supported upon a creel; and it has more special reference to a novel spindle construction for sup porting the cheeses on the creel.
It has heretofore been the practice to support the cheeses upon a creel equipped with slightly inclined spindles, each adapted to support a pair of cheeses with the adjacent ends of the cheese cores in frictional engagement. With the spindles thus constructed, it has been necessary to pull the threads from the paired cheeses in opposite directions due to the fact that the frictional bearing engagement between the abutting ends of the cheese cores is sufficient to cause a driving action of one,of the cheeses upon the other, particularly in the case of cheeses of diflerent diameters. On the other hand, rotation of the paired cheeses in opposite directions is objectionable because of the drag on the threads incident to the frictional engagement between the cheeses, and also because the mounting of the cheeses on the spindles so as to require the yarn strands or threads to be pulled off in opposite directions is inconvenient and time consunning.
With the foregoing in view, the object of my invention is to provide a novel spindle construction which eliminates the frictional bearing engagement between the cores of the two cheeses mounted thereon and which, therefore, permits the cheeses to be so mounted that the threads are pulled therefrom in the same direction.
Figure l is the front view of a twisting machine upon which the improved spindle is used;
Figure 2 is an end view of the machine shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of one of the spindles showing a pair of cheeses mounted thereon;
, Figure 4: is an elevation of the improved spindle and Figure 5 is an end view of a portion of the spindle showing the shoulder and eccentric tip.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I have shown for purposes of illustration a twisting machine generally designated 1 having a series a power driven bobbins B, to each of which paired threads are supplied from cheeses C mounted upon a creel generally designated 8, the paired threads being guided and controlled in a conventional manner. As shown. the threads pass downwardly through guides 8 and thence consecutively beas with the Burlingame, Pawtucket, R. 1., assignor Rockford, 111., a
tween rollers Ill and thread guides II to the ring rail l2.
The cheeses C are supported upon the creel 8 by means of fixed spindles l3 slightly inclined from the horizontal, in the conventional manner. In accordance with my invention, each spindle is constructed to support a pair of cheeses in axially spaced relation in a manner such as to avoid any frictional engagement between the two cheeses while permitting of free and easy placement and removal of the cheeses on the spindle. As shown, each cheese has a central core M of wood, and the spindle is especially shaped to provide an inner portion l3a providing a bearing for the core of the innermost cheese, and an outer portion l3b providing a bearing for the core of the outermost cheese.
The inner portion l3a of the spindle is made of a diameter substantially corresponding to that of the internal diameter of the central bore of the core, but the outer end portion of the spindle is cut away at its upper side so as to form a bearing surface offset downwardly with respect to the upper surface of the portion l3a. Thus, the upper surface of the outer portion l3b is in effect disposed eccentrically with respect to the corresponding surface of the inner end portion l3a. Between the two bearing surfaces of the spindle is formed a shoulder l5 for engagement by an annular bearing surface It at the inner end of the cheese core. As herein shown, the surface It is formed by the bottom of a socket ll providing, in the case of the innermost cheese, clearance for the spindle fastening means. This means may comprise a hexagonal portion is and a. threaded stem 19 for insertion through a hole in the creel frame, the spindle being secured in position vby means of a nut 20. Preferably, the outer end of the hexagonal portion I8 is rounded to provide a bearing shoulder I8a for engagement by the bearing surface It of the core.
It will be seen that through the provision of two bearing surfaces ofiset transversely with respect to each other, together with the bearing shoulders l5 and l8a, the two cheese cores are maintained in axially spaced relation free of frictional engagement between the cores. Accordingly, it is possible to mount the cheeses on the creel so as to permit the threads to be pulled from adjacent pairs in the same direction. At the same time, the construction and arrangement employed does not in any way interfere free and easy placement or removal of 3 the cheeses with respect to their supporting spindles.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a twisting machine or the like having means for rotatably supporting a plurality of bobbins to be wound, means for supplying yarn to the bobbins comprising a creel having a pinrality of inclined spindles each adapted to support a pair of cheeses and providing bearing surfaces transversely offset with respect to each other and terminating at their inner ends in bearing shoulders for engagement by the cheese cores, said shouldersbeing spaced apart axially of the spindle so as to maintain the cores in axially spaced relation.
2. A spindle for supporting a pair of cheeses for rotation on axes inclined slightly from the horizontal, comprising inner and outer portions for engagement by the cores of the respective cheeses. the outer portion of the spindle having its upper portion cut away so as to be offset downwardly from the corresponding surface of the inner portion, and a bearing shoulder at the inner end of said outer portion for engagement by the core oi the outermost cheese whereby the two cores are held in axially spaced relation.
3. A spindle for supporting a pair of cheeses for rotation on axes inclined slightly from the horizontal, comprising inner and outer portions for engagement by the cores of the respective cheeses, lhe outer portion of the spindle having a bearing surface oflset downwardly from the bearing surface of the inner portion and terminating at its inner end in a shoulder for engagement by the core of the outermost cheese and means at the inner end of the spindle providing a bearing shoulder for the innermost cheese.
