2 Claims.
This invention relates to stanchions.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved stanchion including means for releasably locking the yoke members in either operative or released position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a stanchion which when in released position is looked against swinging movement, and when in operative position is free to swing from its support.
A further object of this invention is to provide a stanchion which in its released position will prevent the animal from moving forwardly past the stanchion.
A further object of this invention is to provide a stanchion of simple construction having locking means which will hold the stanchion in closed position and when locked serve to disengage the lock engaging the stanchion support.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary horizontal section showing the outer ends of the locking means in locked position with respect to the stanchion support.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals l5 and l l designate generally a pair of upright supporting bars which are connected together at their upper ends by upper connecting bar l2. The bar l2, as shown in Figure 1, is extended through T members l3 which are threaded onto the upright bars l0, II, and also onto the horizontal connecting bar 12.
The stanchion is suspendingly supported from the upper bar I2 and includes a pair of elongated bars or tubes I4, l5, which are formed at the lower ends with inwardly directed curved :portions I6, ll, respectively. The curved portions [6, ll, are preferably flattened as at l8, l9, and these flattened portions are pivotally connected together by means of a pivot 20. The lower end of the stanchion is anchored relative to the floor 2i by means of a chain 22 which is connected at its upper end to a pivot bolt 26, and is connected at its lower end to an anchor member 23 which is anchored in the floor 2 I. An upper horizontally disposed guide bar 24 is disposed at the upper ends of the vertical members 4, 15. The bar 24 has slidable thereon a pair of sleeves or tubular members 25, 26. The sleeve 25 has fixed thereto a bushing 21 which is formed with an outwardly extending ear 28. The bushing also includes a pair of depending ears 29 between which the upper end of the vertical stanchion bar 14 is loosely engaged, the bar [4 being pivotally mounted on a pivot 30 extending between the ears 29.
The slide member 26 has loosely mounted thereon a U-shaped stanchion bar supporting member 3! which extends through a U-shaped holding bar 32 fixed to the sleeve 26. The U-shaped member 3| has fixed thereto an angle member 33, as shown in Figure 4, with which one end of an elongated link 34 is pivotally connected. The tubular member 26 has fixed thereto a U-shaped keyway forming member 35, within which a key 36 fixed to the tubular member 24 is adapted to loosely engage. The key 36 which is fixed to the tubular member 24 is disposed at one end of the tubular member 24 and the slidable sleeve 26 is formed with a cutout 31, as shown in Figure 1, so that in the operative or locked position of the stanchion the outer end of the sleeve 26 will be disposed inwardly of the inner end of the key 36 with the keyway 35 out of registry with the key 36.
A handle 38 is fixed to the slide member 26, extending at substantially right angles with respect to the keyway 35 so that the handle 38 may gravitatingly swing downwardly to a vertical position and thereby maintain the keyway 35 out of registry with the key 36. The tubular member 25 has fixed thereto a pair of locking bars 39 which, in the outermost position of the tubular member 25, are adapted to straddle the fixed supporting bar Ill, as shown in Figure 6.
The stanchion includes an intermediate sleeve or tubular member 40 which is disposed between the two slide members 25, 26. The intermediate tubular member 40 has rockably mounted thereon a slide operating member of substantially Z shape which includes an intermediate body 4| pivotally mounted on a bolt 42 which extends through the tubular member 4|] and the tubular guide member 24. The slide operating member 4| also includes a laterally extending arm 43 which is pivotally connected as at 44 to the inner end of the link 34. The other end of the body or plate 4| has extending therefrom a lug 45 which extends oppositely from the lug 43. One end of a link 46 is pivotally connected as at to the lug 45, and the other end of the link 46 is formed with a plurality of holes 48, through a selected one of which a pivot bolt 49 extends.
The bolt 49 also extends through the ear 28. The slide 26 is limited in its outward movement to open or inoperative position by means of a stop pin 50 which is carried by the adjacent end of the guide bar 24. A U-shaped member 5| has the bight 52 thereof mounted on the bolt 42 above the plate 4!, and the lowermost link of a chain 53 is mounted on a bolt 54 extending between the parallel legs 55 of the U-shaped member 5 I. The uppermost link of the chain 53 is engaged with 'a bolt 56 carried by a U-shaped hanger 5! which extends over the upper supporting bar 12.
In the use and operation of this stanchion, the side bars l4, [5 are adapted to be moved outwardly to released or inoperative position by turning the operating member 4 I. This will move the slide members 25, 26 outwardly, the handle 38 being initially raised to a substantially horizontal position as shown in Figure 4, in order to position the keyway 35 in registry with the key 36. When the slide members 25, 26 are in their outermost positions, the locking bars 39 carried by slide member 25 will straddle the supporting post l0 so as to hold the open stanchion against swinging movement on at least one side thereof.
When the head of the animal has been extended through the open stanchion, the slide operating member is rotated to move the slide members 25, 26 inwardly to the position shown in Figure 2. When the keyway 35 is moved inwardly from the key 36, the handle 38 will gravitatingly swing downwardly, thereby moving the keyway 35 out of registry with the key and will thus prevent outward swinging of the stanchion members l4, l5. The slide operating member 4| will also in its locked position, through pivoted links 34 and 46, hold these slide members against outward movement.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A stanchion comprising a horizontal guide 1 member, a pair of yoke forming members, means pivotally securing the lower ends of said yoke members together, a pair of slide members slidably carried by said guide member, one of said slide members being rotatable on said guide member, a centrally disposed slide operator, means including links pivotally connecting said operator with said slide members, means pivotally securing said slide members with the upper ends of said yoke members, a key fixed to said guide member, a. keyway carried by said one slide member, and a laterally projecting handle fixed to said one slide member adapted when said slide members are in their inner operative position to gravitatingly rotate said one slide member to locking position with said keyway out of registry with said key.
2. A stanchion comprising a horizontal guide member, a pair of yoke forming members, means pivotally securing the lower ends of said yoke members together, a pair of tubular slide members loosely carried by said guide member, a centrally disposed slide operator, means including links pivotally connecting said operator with said slide members, means pivotally securing said slide members to the upper ends of said yoke members, said latter means including an inverted U- shaped member loosely engaging about one of said slide members, a U-shaped holding member fixed to said one slide member and loosely engaging about said inverted U-shaped member, a handle carried by said one slide member and extending laterally therefrom, a key carried by said guide member adjacent one end thereof, and a keyway formed in said one slide member, said key being of such length that when said one slide member is in inner locked position said keyway will be disengaged from said key, said handle gravitatingly swinging downwardly when said one slide is in inner position to thereby rotate said one slide member to position said keyway out of registry with said key.
