1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to Windows, and more particularly to a slidable window sash having an inner frame pivotally mounted on a vertical axis in an outer frame, so that the inner frame may be swung inwardly to permit cleaning the outer side "thereof.
One object of thepresent invention is 'to provide a double window sash of the above nature, in which it will be easy to disassemble the inner frame from the outer frame, which will be weatherand waterproof, and in which the outside of the inner frame may be washed without removing the window screen or storm sash, or leaning out of the window.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 represents an inside front elevation of the double window sash embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same, taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken along the broken line 44 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view, similar to Fig. 3, taken through the pivot pin socket, at the bottom of the inside frame.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, taken along the broken line 6-'6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of one of the looking plates for the lower pins of the inner frame.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the inside frame of the upper sash shown in locked position.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 8 with the inside frame dropped down into detachable position.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals I0 and I I indicate upper and lower outer window sashes, respectively, which are adapted to be slidable within an outer window casing, not shown.
Located within the outer sashes III, II, respectively, are an upper inner frame I2 and a lower 2 firmer frame 13, having bevelled right hand Wentical rails I i, I 5, respectively, for facilitating the closing :of said inner frames with respect to said outer iframe.
Theiinner frames I2, I3 are each provided with vertical left hand rails I-5a, 1 51;, top horizontal rails :16, I 6, bo'ttom rails I1, and glass panes :IE8,.as'-'clearly.show-n in the drawings.
The inner frames I2, I3 are adapted to be detachably locked in position by means of upper latches I9, l9, bottom latches 20, 20, and side latches 2I, 2i, which are mounted on said inner frames, and are adapted to detachably engage said outer frames I0, I I, said latches being of common construction, and forming no part of the present invention. The latches fit into bevelled sockets in the outer frames to insure a tight locking action at all times irrespective of wear.
In order to permit the inner frames I2, I3 to have pivotal motion with respect to said outer frames I0, I I, provision is made on the left hand vertical rails of the outer frames III, II of a pair of end grooves 22, 22 having upper extensions 23, 23, and lower extensions 24, 24. The lower extensions 24 are provided with laterally and downwardly offset sockets 25, within which a locking plate 26 is adapted to seat. The locking plate 26 is provided with an outer shelf 21 and a semi-cylindrical depending flange 28 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The left handrails I5a of both of the inner frames are provided with vertical ribs 29, 29 having upper extension pins 30 to fit into the extensions of the grooves 23, and bottom extension pins 3| to fit into the lower extensions of the grooves 22.
Each outer frame is also provided with a lateral downwardly offset recess 32 for receiving the shelf 21 formed on the locking plate.
In order to cause water to drain freely from the sashes, provision is made of inclined drain strips 33 at the lower ends of said inside frames I2.
To lock the upper and lower sashes III, II, together in the closed position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, provision is made of a horizontal pin 34 having a handle 35 which is normally pressed inwardly by a spring 36 :into a socket 31.
Operation In operation, when it is desired to remove either of the interior frames I2, I3 from either of the outer frames I0, I I, it will be merely necessary to lift out the lockingplates 26 from their sockets 25 to permit the lower pins 3| of the inner sash frames I2, l3 to be moved laterally off of the depending extension of the grooves 22. The ribs 29 in the left hand end of the inner frames will thus be permitted to drop down into the base of the socket 25 so as to permit the inner frame to be readily removed from the outer frame.
To permit the inner frame to be swung into the room about its pivot in the groove 22, it will merely be necessary to unlock the latches I9, I9, 20, 20, and 2|, 2|. The outside of the sash may then be washed without removing the window screen or storm window or leaning out of the window casing.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming Within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
In a double Window sash, an outer frame having a vertical groove in one side rail, a detachable inner frame having on its outer edge a vertical rib shaped to fit within said groove, said groove having upper and lower extensions, and said rib also having upper and lower extensions to seat within the extensions of said groove, a lateral inwardly-extending socket in the lower sill of said outer frame, said socket being connected with said lower groove extension and having an inwardly extending flat recess, and a detachable fiat locking plate fitted within said socket and recess for preventing said inner frame from moving inwardly out of operating position, said looking plate having a depending semicircular outer flange embracing the inner end of the lower extension of said rib.
