Description

Modem J. L. STEVENS.
Bee BOX. No. 250,296.
WI TJVESSES V l Ry Mam I E Ens. P'llolo-Mhogmphcr, Wallllnglon. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. STEVENS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO GUSTAVE ST. KUNZ AND JOHN STEPHAN, BOTH OF. SAME PLACE.
EGG-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,296, dated November 29, 1881,
Application filed September 13, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown thatLJOHNL. STEVENS, of Ollicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvernentsin Egg-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a box for eggs, fruit, and other similar articles, the parts of which when not in use will be flat, and capable of being compactly packed for storage or transportation, and which may be readily folded and secured together to form a partitioned box when required for use, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the" devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of myimproved box complete and ready for use, and Fig. 2 a. view of the blank of which the box is formed.
The letter A indicates the blank, which consists ofarectangular sheet of pasteboard, cardboard, thin wood, or other suitable material, which is scored or partially cut through along the lines a I) and c d, and cut through entirely, as indicated by the letters cf, in such manner that the parts may be folded up into rectangular form, as indicated in Fig. l of the drawings.
The flaps B, at the corners of the blank, are each provided at one edgeiwith a tongue, 9, formed by cutting out a portion of the material, as indicated by the letter h.
The side flaps, O, are provided with oblong rectangular slots 1', in such position that when the respective flaps are bent up vertically the ton gucs 9 may beinserted in and passed through the slots 2', the flaps B being bent against the sides of the flaps (J, so as to re-enforce the box at the corners.
formed of the same or similar material as the I body of the box. The said partitions are constructed in the ordinary manner by slotting the same at suitable intervals from one edge to about midway between the two edges, and securing them together. In this condition they may be flattened out for storage or transportation, or arranged at right angles, as indicated in Fig. 1, and inserted in the box, forming receptacles for eggs, fruit, and other an ticles.
It will be percein d that the partitions serve not only to support. the sidesof the box, but also hold the tongues g in place and prevent them from bending and slipping out of the slots. It will be seen, also, that the lower free corner and edges of the flaps B permit the same to spring, thus taking up any shock or jar to the boxes, and preventing breakage of the eggs.
As thus constructed the box may be made sufficiently cheap to be supplied to the customer with the eggs, thus obviating the trouble, expense, and inconvenience of returning the same to the shipper or packer, and the contamination that invariably occurs in packing fresh eggs in boxes which have been anylength of time in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination with the box, constructed as described, the partitions located therein and abutting against the sides and tongues, whereby the parts are strengthened and held in position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of August, 1881.
' JOHN L. STEVENS.
