The lower face of the member 2| terminates adjacent the open top guide channels. The vertices of opposite angular supports are diametrically positioned. When the filling material is dropped into the hopper 23, the distributor vanes l9 feed the material radially and the member 2| directs the material downwardly to the rotatable platform I Due to the centrifugal force developed by rotation of the platform H, the fibrous material thrown into the hopper acquires centrifugal force tending to throw it outwardly from the rotatable platform and this force causes the material to be forcibly fed into the casings under great pressure. This pressure forces the entrained air out of the fabric casings 25 and permits dense packing of the fabric casings even though the fabric is made of non-porous material which does not idly and densely.
Figures 6 and '7 show a modified filling machine 35 comprising a rotatable disk-shaped platform 36 carrying an upper casing section 31 and a.
lower casing section 38 which are held in unitary relation by wing nuts 39 threaded upon pivotally mounted bolts 40. The casing sections 31 and 38 are of the same circular cross-section. The interior of the lower casing 38 has a mold section 4!. The interior of the upper casing section 31 has a complementary mold section 42. In the illustration shown the interiors of the mold sections are in the shape of a hexagon and are designed to receive fabric casing such as that used for a hexagon-shaped hassock 43 or the like. Mounted on pivot pins 44 on the upper mold casing section 31 are a plurality of gripping rods 45 having arcuate ends 46. The arcuate ends 46 serve to grip and support the neck portion of the hassock casing 43. Supported on the top of the upper mold section 3! by suitable angle members 48 is a hopper 49.
The platform 36 is mounted on a vertical shaft 50 which is suitably supported by bearings and rotated by a belt 52 from a motor (not shown).
It is to be noted that slots 4'! have been provided in the lower portion of the hopper 49, for the purpose of clearing the arcuate ends 46 of the rods 45 in their upward movement out of the hassock as is the case when a filled hassock is removed and replaced with an empty one.
The filling material is fed into the hopper 49 and enters the hassock casing 43, and, due to the centrifugal force developed by the rotation of the platform 36 the fibrous material fed through the hopper tends to move radially and acquires centrifugal force which throws the material radially outwardly and this force causes the material to be forcibly fed into the hassock casing under pressure. This pressure forces the entrained air out of the casing 43 and permits dense packing of the hassoclz casing.
Figures 8 and 9 show another modified filling machine 55 designed for filling two casings 56 suitably held by angular supports 51 on a rotatable platform 58. The casings are held at diametrically opposite points of the rotatable platform. The platform is supported on a frame 59 and rotated by a shaft 60.
A protective cover, preferably made of wire grill work 6| is positioned horizontally in line with the upper surface of the fioor 62 of the operating room.
It is to be noted that the filling machine disclosed in Figures 8 and 9 is preferably sunk below the fioor level. Supported by angle members 63 is a hopper 64 through which the material is fed downwardly.
Suitably fixed to the revolving platform 58 is a receptacle 65 having two radially extending ducts 66 leading into guide channels 61. The guide channels 61 are secured to the platform by angle irons 68. The neck portions 69 of the easings 56 to be filled are secured by cords 70 pass-- ing around the guide channels 67.
Due to the centrifugal force developed by the rotation of the platform 58 the fibrous material fed into the hopper 64 tends to move radially and. acquires centrifugal force which throws the material radially outwardly into the guide channels and forcibly feeds the material into the casings 56 under pressure. This pressure forces the entrained air out of the fabric casings and permits dense packing of the fabric casings even though the fabric is made of non-porous material.
It is to be noted that due to the substantial quantity of material fed through the hopper, after the central portion of the hassock casing is covered the additional material fed into the casing is fed away from the center of the machine and this additional material is thrown radially outwardly by the centrifugal force and acquires a continually increasing force radially outwardly.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a machine for filling containers with fibrous material, a casing having a stationary hopper and means for rotatably supporting a shaft in upright position, a disk-shaped platform fixed to said shaft and rotatably mounted in said casing, said platform having a plurality of angular supports spaced around its circumference and providing converging vertical walls against which containers to be filled may be placed and held against movement during rotation, a cone-shaped member mounted axially on said shaft above said platform, and with the base of said cone in contact with said platform, open top guide channels fixed to said platform and leading from said cone directly into openings in said containers, a distributor having radially positioned blades and being fixedly mounted on said shaft above said cone and above said platform, said blades serving to feed said fibrous material radially out wardly, an inverted cup-shaped member enclosing said distributor for directing said material downwardly and means for rotating said shaft and causing centrifugal force to be imparted to said filling material whereby said material will forcibly enter and fill said containers and simultaneously eject the air therefrom through said openings.
2. In a machine for filling containers with fi- 5 brous material, a casing having a stationary hopper and means for rotatably supporting a shaft in upright position, a disk-shaped platform fixed to said shaft and rotatably mounted in said casing, said platform having a plurality of angular supports spaced around its circumference and Q platform, a distributor having radially positioned providing converging vertical walls against which containers to be filled may be placed and held against movement during rotation, the vertices of opposite angular supports being diametrically positioned, a cone-shaped member mounted axially on said shaft above said platform, and with the base of said cone in contact with said platform, open top guide channels fixed to said platform and leading from said cone directly into openings in said containers, a distributor having radially positioned blades and being fixedly mounted on said shaft above said cone and above said platform, said blades serving to feed said fibrous material radially outwardly, an inverted cup-shaped member enclosing said distributor for directing said material downwardly, said cupshaped member terminating at its lower face adjacent said open top guide channels, and means for rotating said shaft and causing centrifugal force to be imparted to said filling material whereby said material will forcibly enter and fill said containers and simultaneously eject the air therefrom through said openings.
3. In a machine for filling containers with fibrous material, a casing having a stationary hopper and means for rotatably supporting a shaft in upright position, a disk-shaped platform fixed to said shaft and rotatably mounted in said casing, said platform having a plurality of angular supports spaced around its circumference and providing converging vertical walls against which containers to be filled may be placed and held against movement during rotation, the vertices of opposite angular supports being diametrically positioned, open top guide channels fixed to said blades and being fixedly mounted on said shaft in spaced relation above said platform, said blades serving to feed said fibrous material radially outwardly, an inverted cup-shaped member enclosing said distributor for directing said material downwardly, said cup-shaped member terminating at its lower face adjacent said open top guide channels, and means for rotating said shaft and causing centrifugal force to be imparted to said filling material whereby said material will forcibly enter and fill said containers and simultaneously eject the air therefrom through said openings.
4. In a machine for filling containers with fibrous material, a casing having a stationary hopper and means for rotatably supporting a shaft in upright position, a disk-shaped platform fixed to said shaft and rotatably mounted in said casing, said platform having a plurality of angular supports spaced around its circumference and providing converging vertical walls against which containers 'to be filled may be placed and held against movement during rotation, the vertices of opposite angular supports being diametrically positioned, open top guide channels fixed to said platform, means circumscribing said hopper for directing material to said guide channels, and means for rotating said shaft and causing centrifugal force to be imparted to said filling material whereby said material will forcibly enter and fill said containers and simultaneously eject the air therefrom through said openings.
