TOY LOCOMOTIVE CONSTRUCTION Filed Oct. 1, 1947 L'lz'eutur I Rwerf 5. Geode, Jr.
Attorneys Patented Mar. 28, 1950 UNITED STATES PATE-NT OFFICE I 2,501,719 p "TOY Locomo'rrvn CONSTRUCTION I Robert E. Goode, 3n, Prescott, rifiz. Application October 1, 1947;1Serial No. 777,353
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in toy trains and the primary object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for the locomotive of toy trains simulating full size trains that will guide the reciprocating movement of the piston nod connected to one wheel of the locomotive.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a piston rod guide attachment for toy locomotives so designed as to simulate the actual guide and packing glands forming a part of a full size locomotive.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a guide for the foregoing purposes that is quickly and readily applied to or removed from a toy train for assuring a guided reciprocal movement of the piston rod within the cylinder head.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a device for toy trains that is simple and practical in construction, strong and durable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the present invention applied to a toy train;
Figure 2 is a group perspective View of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the cylinder head and showing a portion of the invention applied thereto, and with parts thereof broken away and shown in section;
Figure 4 is a similar view of Figure 3 and showing the cylinder head in slightly modified form; and,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the cylinder head in slightl modified form.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral ill represents the loco-motive of a toy train to which is suitably secured a cylinder head I2 simulating a steam chest.
Workable within a horizontally disposed longitudinal bore M provided in the cylinder head is a piston rod l6 projecting outwardly from one end of a drive rod Ill. The other end of the drive rod I8 is removably secured to the hub of a selected wheel of the locomotive, preferably the drive wheel 20.
The numeral 22 represents generally a substantially U-shaped member having its web portion 24 of slightly increased Width to bear against the rear face of th cylinder head. This web portion is provided with a smooth bore hole 26 opposing an internally threaded aperture 28 provided in the cylinder head, and a bolt or the like 30 retains member 22 to the cylinder head so that the arms or terminal portions 32 of member 22 are disposed horizontally and in spaced parallelism. The bolt .30 is provided with a central aperture 34 communicating with bore M so that the bolt also acts as a bearing for the piston rod.
Pivotally mounted on drive rod 18 near the piston i6, is a pair of spaced parallel side members 3B integrally formed with a pair of longitudinall extending channel shaped guide members 38, that engage the arms 32.
Reference is now directed to Figures 4 and 5 wherein there is disclosed a modified construction of the cylinder head 40. A recess 42 is provided in the rear face of the cylinder head to receive the web portion i l of the U-shaped member 46, and the central portion 48 of the recess is enlarged to engage the enlarged central portion 50 of the web 44.
In operation of the device in either form, as the train moves forwardly or rearwardly drive rod 18 is reciprccated and as the guide members 38 engage arms 32 the longitudinal movement of the piston rod H5 in the cylinder head is assured, thereby permitting uniform movement of the train without restriction.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of th invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a toy locomotive including driven wheels operatively connected to a source of power and a drive rod connected to the driven wheels; the improvement of which comprises a cylinder head simulating a steam chest mounted on the locomotive and having a longitudinal bore, a substantially U-shaped guide member having spaced parallel leg portions, means detachably securing said guide member to said cylinder head, a pair of side members pivoted to said drive rod, upper said side members and said channels, said piston rod being received in said longitudinal bore and said means constituting a bearing for said piston rod.
2. The combination of claim l'iwhereinrsaid means includes a headed bolt having an axial opening.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said U-shaped guide member includesg-alwebicportlon having an enlarged central portion, said cylinder head having a fiat, substantially vertical rear face, and a substantiall key-:shaped-iecess-v-provided in the rear face of said cylinder head re ceiving the web portion. of said guide member to prevent rotation of said U-shaped guide member relative to said cylinder head.
