MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
No. 250,169. Patented Nov; 29,1881.
W INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS N. PETERS, Hwmuim mr. wuhing wn. mu
.- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARGY PORTER AND THOMAS H. WHITE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
MECHANICAL MOVEM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,169, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed October 4, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DARcY PORTER and THOMAS H.WHITE, of Cleveland, in the county of'Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement; in mechanical movements for sewing-machines and other purposes; and it consists in a mechanical movement which converts the rotary motion of the main horizontal driving-shaft of a sewing-machine into a vibrating motion for operating the shuttle-bar, and, by the interposition of other mechanism, at the same time communicates rotary motion to the feed-shaft.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, in front elevation, of a portion of a sewing-machine constructed according to our invention, and Fig. 2 isan end view of the same.
In the said drawings, Arepresents the standard of an ordinary sewing-machine, adapted to hold and support the operative parts of our device as a frame.
B represents the main horizontal drivingshaft, which is provided with a crank, B.
Upon the crank B is adapted to turn the lever C. This lever O is pivoted at its lower end to the crank E upon the feed-shaft E. The lever O is also provided with a radius-bar, O, which oscillates upon the stationary shaft O and is pivotally attached to the lever O at 0. Now, as the horizontal shaftB is revolved a rotary motion is communicated to the shaft E through the lever 0. To the crank B is also attached the lever D by means of a yoke or slot, D. This lever D is pivoted at D ,while its lower end is pivotally attached to the shuttle-bar F. Now, as the main horizontal shaft B is revolved the crank B moves in the slot in yoke D of the lever D, and as the latter is pivoted at D a vibrating motion is given to the bar D, and the same motion is communicated to the shuttle-bar F.
By our invention, by the use of a single crank upon the main horizontal driving-shaft of a sewin g-machine a vibratory motion is given (No model.)
to the shuttle-bar and a rotary motion to the feed-shaft. It is apparent that the same movement can be produced in the lever G if the lever were slotted at c and the pivot c permanently attached. to the frame A as is produced by the use of the radius-bar 0. (Shown in the drawings.)
We make no claim to the invention disclosed in Letters Patent No. 248,214, granted to DArcy Porter (one of the applicants in this case) October 11, 1881. In said patent the drivin g-shaft is shown as being provided with an eccentric having a lever connected therewith for imparting rotary movement to the feed-shaft, and an eccentric-rod that has a sliding movement in a guide attached to the short arm of the leverthatactuates the shuttle-lever. In our improvement, as herein set forth, we dispense with the eccentric and employ a crank on the main driving-shaft, and instead of employing the eccentric-rod and lever for actuating the shuttle-lever we use a single lever having a yoke at its upper end.
This improvement greatly simplifies the construction of parts, reduces the cost of manufacture, andis of greater durability than the construction referred to.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 1. The combination, with the main horizontaldriving-shaftofasewing-machine,ofacrank upon said shaft, to which are attached two levers, one adapted to rotate the feed-shaft by the interposition of a radius-bar or equivalent mechanism, while the other communicates a vibrating movement to the shuttle-bar, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. In a sewing-machine, the combination of the main driving-shaft B, crank B, lever O, radius-bar O, crank E, and shaft E with the lever D, provided with the yoke D and shuttle-bar F, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAROY PORTER.
