SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 250,029, dated November 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELOSS WoRDnN, of Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement upon my new and improved pipe-tongs shown and described in Letters Patent No. 240,067, which were granted to me April 12,1881; and it has for its object to provide improved means for holding the bite-block in the bite-chamber, such construction as to the relative size of the bite-block and bite-chamber that the durability of the block is increased, and such construction of the bite-tong and its chamber that any length of bite-block may be used for increasing the bearing-surface of the bite-block upon the pipe, and thus removing all danger of crushing the pipe.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved pipe-ton gs. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bite-ton g. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line 00 w of Fig.2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bite-block removed from the bite-chamber.
A represents the ordinary bent or hookshaped tong or jaw, pivoted to the bite-tong B by the rivet a. The bite-tongB is cast or forged of steel, and has the chamber bformed in it in such manner as to form the narrow opening or slot'd across the diagonal face 6 of the tong.
The chamber b may be square or of any other form adapted to receive the removable biteblock 0, of corresponding shape, and present one edge thereof through the narrow slot or opening din position to take hold upon the pipe. The bite-chamber is larger than the exterior of the bite-block, and permits the block to have a slight movement therein, so that when the tongs are moved for a new hold upon the pipe the bite-block will change its position in the chamber, so that the friction of the pipe in the backward movement of the tongs will come on a different surface of the bite-block than when the tongs are moved for turning the pipe, thus increasing the wear and durability of the bite-blocks. .The bite-blocks are held in the bite-chamber by means of the bent rod F, the short arm f of which passes through the counterbored opening a through the forward end of the bite-tong B, as shown in Fig. 3. The forward end of this bent rod is made eccentric,so thatwhen the long arm f of the rod is down to the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, the enlarged portion thereof will enter one of the gutters 0 made across the biteblocks, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus hold the block securely in the chamber. The long arm f of the rod is so bent as to act as a spring, and when brought into place upon the'outside of the bite-tong rests in the groove or depression 6, and thus obviates all danger of the bite-bloclr accidentally coming out of the chamber.
In order to remove the bite-block, the long arm of the bent rod must be forced out of the depression 6 and raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, when the eccentric portion of the short arm will be moved out of the gutter of the bite-block, and thus leave it free to be taken out of the chamber.
The bite-blocks are made longer than the face of the bite-tong, and when in place in the bite-chamber the ends extend past both sides of the bite-tong, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By this means, when the tongs are applied to the pipe, a long and much-increased bearingsurface upon the pipe is furnished, thus obviating the ditficulty experienced with tongs having narrow bites of indenting or crushing the body of the pipe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The bite-tong B, formed with the bitechamber 1) and With the opening a,in combination with the removable bite-block U and the bent rod F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the bite-tong B, formed with the bite-chain ber Z1, opening a, and depression 0, the bite-block 0, formed with the gutters c, and the bent eccentric spring-rod F, as and for the purposes set forth.
