Description

CELLAR DRAIN VALVE Filed NOV. 21, 1944 Z '3 7 Z4 /6 g/ I z? 50 6, 214 3g as /7 l" L h------- 4 za /5 Z4 Patented May 13, 1952 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a cellar drain valve and embodies a structure which is an improvement over what is shown in Patent No. 2,235,308 which issued March 18, 1941.
It is an object of the invention to provide a valve of this kind having novel and improved means for maintaining a closure member or plug in effective position, together with means whereby such member or plug can be readily released and moved into inoperative position when desired. v
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cellar drain valve whereby certain important advantag'es are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
B denotes the upper bell end portion of a drain pipe which is embedded in the floor of a cellar or elsewhere as may be preferred, with its top end substantially flush with the floor surface.
Engaged within the bell B of the pipe and resting upon the usual internal shoulder I is a substantially cylindrical body member 2 fully open at its bottom or inserted end and which is herein disclosed as being gradually reduced in diameter from its bottom to its top on a predetermined degree to provide a suitable surrounding space 3 for the placement of packing of any desired kind.
The body member 2 is of such dimensions as to extend a slight distance above the bell end portion of the drain pipe and said upper or top end is provided with an inwardly disposed surrounding flange 4 defining a relatively large central opening 5, the top portion of the wall of which is rabbeted, as at 6, to provide a support for a perforated filter plate 1.
This plate 1, as herein disclosed, is substantially concavo-convex in form and when applied has its convex face downwardly disposed. The periphery of the plate I is defined by a surroundingflange or rim 8 at the concave side of the plate and said rim or flange 8 at its upper margin carries a surrounding outstanding lip 9 which engages within the rabbet 6 hereinbefore referred to.
The top or outer face of the flange 4 is flat and is directly engaged by an annular gasket ll! underlying the peripheral portion of the valve or plug member M. This gasket l0 snugly surrounds a depending annular flange l l at the central portion of the member M and which, when the member M is in closed position, substantially snugly engages within the rim or flange 8 of the filter plate-1. I
The central portion of the member M has rigid therewith an outstanding elongated post 12 which is freely disposed through an opening I4 in the basewall 15 of an inverted cup-like boxing l6 herein disclosed as integrally formed with substantially the central portion of a lever L.
The lever L at one extremity is provided with a laterally disposed and depending lug H which is of a bifurcated type and straddles the outer end portion of an outstanding lug l8 rigid with the upper portion of the side wall of the body 2. Disposed through the lugs I1 and I8 is a pintle [9 whereby the lever L is supported for movement to swing across the top or outer end of the body member 2 or to be swung away therefrom.
When the lever L is in its lowered position and which is a position radially across the top or outer end of the body member 2, the valve member M is in closed position and is tightly maintained in such position by the expansible member 20 interposed between the member M and the base wall l5 of the boxing l6. As herein disclosed, this expansible member 20 constitutes a coil spring of requisite tension surrounding the post [2.
The lever L is of a length to extend entirely across and slightly beyond the top or outer end of the body member 2 and the outer or free end portion of the lever L is formed to provide the transversely spaced and outwardly disposed plate arms 2| which are substantially in parallel with the longitudinal axis of the lever L. These plate arms 2| also extend a distance below or inwardly of the lever L and between the lower portions of these plate arms 2| is pivotally held by the pin 22 a laterally disposed mounting lug 23 rigid with the central portion of a latch arm 24. This latch arm 24 is of a length to extend below the upper or top end of the body member 2 when the member M is in closed position so that the inwardly disposed holding lip 25 of the latch arm 24 may have proper engagement from below by the properly positioned outstanding keeper 26 rigid with the upper part of the body member 2.
Interposed between the upper or outer end portion of the arm 24 and the end wall of the lever L between the plate arms 2| is an expans ible member 21 also herein disclosed as a coil spring of requisite tension and which operates to constantly urge the lower or holding end of the arm 24 inwardly so that the lip 25 will be in effective relation with respect to the keeper 26. To facilitate the proper engagement of the lip 25 with the keeper 26 as the lever L is swung to bring the member M into closed position, the top surface of the keeper 26 at its outer portion is outwardly and downwardly beveled, as at 28.
The central portion of the arm 24 has rigid therewith an outstanding arm 29 to the outer or free extremity of which is suitably anchored, as at 30, an end portion of a pull line 31 which may be a cord or wire or otherwise as may be properto comply with the requirements of practice. This pull line 3| is of desired length so that it can be readily operated to swing the lever L away from the body member 2 to open the valve so that it will not be necessary for the person to wade into the water to reach the valve under flood conditions.
The lug 23 is provided with an outstanding finger 32 positioned for contact from below with the lever L at a point between the plate arms 2| to provide means for positively limiting the extent of inward swinging movement of the end portion of the arm 24 carrying the lip 25.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cellar drain valve constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim: A valve of the character described, comprising a tapered circular body open at its upper and lower ends, means at said open upper end forming a valve seat, a concave-convex strainer disposed within said upper open end and having an encircling supporting lip, the said upper open end of the body having an annular recess to receive said strainer lip, said lip having its upper side disposed flush with the surface of the said upper open end, a fiat valve member above the said upper open end of the body at the outer side of said annular recess, an annular flange on the underside of said valve member disposed in the upper side of said strainer, a gasket encircled about said flange and seated on the said upper open end of the body and the flush surface of the said strainer lip, a lever disposed across the open end of the body to overlie the valve member, pivot means between one end of the lever and the body, cooperating means between the other end of the lever and the body for releasably coupling the lever with the body, a pin carried by the valve member and extending through the lever, and a spring interposed between the valve member and the lever and encircling said pin.
