1 Claim.
This invention relates to a moisture-proof saltshaker.
An object of the invention is to provide such a device comprising a novel form of cap and cover and means for maintaining the same in moistureproof relationship.
Another object is to provide a novel form of top or lid for a condiment shaker making possible a controlled and directed ejection of the contents of the container.
A further object is to produce constructions such as described in a simple and efficient manner.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of our improved condiment shaker in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the top portions only of the invention, with the lid open.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the cap, lid and associated means of our invention, shown in closed relation.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail of catch means that may be employed in connection with our invention.
There are two prime needs in connection with the use of salt and other condiments. One is to keep out moisture, so that the condiment will continue to flow. The other is to be able to direct and control the flow so that the condiment may be used exactly in the amounts and in the places desired. Our invention effectively achieves these purposes.
With reference to the drawing, the device comprises a container 1 formed with a threaded open top adapted to receive the threaded annular ring portion 8 of a cap 9. The cap is constructed to provide an inwardly directed circumferential flange or yoke l and a hollow upstanding crown ll formed at one side with a perforated slanted area l2. An interior gasket l3, Figure 3, is disposed between the top of the container 1 and the yoke Ill, and a larger outside gasket or washer I4 is positioned on the said yoke and extends around the base of the crown l l.
A lid l covers cap 9 and is formed with a vertical edge flange l6 adapted to rest on the outside edge portions of yoke I0, and with a circumferential flange or shoulder ll adapted to contact the gasket I4 when the cover is closed. Above shoulder I! the cover is developed into a hollow crown portion for enveloping the crown ll of the cap inspaced relation therewith.
'The cap and cover described are, as shown herein, hingedly connected by hinge means comprising one member l8 secured to lid I5, and a second hinge member secured to ring portion 8 of cap 9. A spring 20 associated with these hinge elements urges the lid to open position. At a point opposite the hinge, on ring portion 8 of cap 9, a spring clip 2| is mounted for cooperation with catch means 22 on the vertical flange I6 of the cover, for further achieving a pressure relation of the cap and lid when closed. As seen in Figure 5, the engaging portions of th clip and catch are rounded, as seen respectively at 23 and 24, whereby automatic locking of the lid is effected upon closure of the latter by pressing it down.
The ejection area l2 of the cap due to the particular slanted relation shown, makes it possible to eject the condiment in container 1 in a desired amount and at a desired direction. It is unnecessary, as with the usual type of shaker, to substantially reverse the shaker in use thereof, since a relatively limited tipping of the shaker herein effects ejection of the condiment through the perforations of the slanted area. Thus the possibility of dumping out too great a quantity of the material is obviated. Moreover, the slant and limited extent of the ejection area make it possible to direct the condiment to the exact location desired.
Modifications suggest themselves upon consideration of the means herein disclosed but these are believed to be comprised within the spirit and scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
A moisture-proof saltshaker comprising a container with a threaded open top, a removable cap for closing said top, said cap including an annular ring portion threaded on its inner surface and engaging said threaded open top, a circumferem tial flange portion extending inwardly from the upper end of said ring portion, and a hollow crown portion extending upwardly from the inner periphery of said flange portion, said crown portion having a perforated fiat slanted surface on one side thereof for the ejection of a condiment therefrom, an annular gasket positioned on said circumferential flange portion and spaced in- Wardly from the outer periphery of the flange portion, a hollow lid pivotally attached to said ring portion for enclosing said cap with the lid in a closed position, said lid having a circumferential flange adjacent its open end and adapted to seat on said gasket, said flange having a depending peripheral skirt encompassing the gasket, resilient means normally urging said lid into an open position, and means on said ring portion and on the skirt for compressively maintaining the circumferential flange portion of said lid against 3 said gasket in a sealing relation, when said lid has Number been moved into its closed position against the 611,410 opposition of said resilient means. 738.981 GRANVILLE W.
