SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,336, dated June 13, 1882.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, DEXTER M. SMALL, a resident of Providence, State of Rhode Island, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Lugs, my object being greater simplicity and consequent cheapness ot' construction, while improving the appearance thereof'.

As will be seen, my lug is composed of only two distinct pieces-Viz., the body ot' the lug and the buckle-each of which is so constructed that it can be readily cast whole without the use of cores,and is complete when cast, so that they t together without any further labor.

The buckle is constructed with a short iinmovable tongue, A, so arianged as to pass through one ofthe holes in the back-band, the upper and lower cross-bars ot' the buckle preventing it from getting off the tongue, the lower bar ofthe buckle also taking the place of a loop on the lug. Below the bar B G, from which the tongue projects, there are two short arms, D and E, which connect the buckle and the lug, one of which is represented in Fig. l, and both of which are indicated bydotted lines 3o in Fig. 3.

The body of the lug is cut away from near the top, leaving a shoulder, K K, both for sake of appearance and to sustain the buckle, which is shipped into position from below, Where it is narrower..

In place of the immovable tongue A, attached to the bar B C, an immovable tongue, F, G, or H, could be used, attached respectively to the under side of the upper or lower cross-bars of the buckle, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, or to the body of the lug, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the back-band being held in position by the cross-bars of the buckle, as before.

I claim as my invention- 1. A thill-lug composed of a loop for the shaft, and a buckle connected therewith by the short lugs D and E, the shaft-loop being cut away at some portion to permit of their being shipped into safe connection, substantially as described.

2. A thill-lug composed of a loop for the shaft, a buckle connected therewith by the short lugs D and E, and a short immovable tongue for securing the back-band, all substantial] y as described.
