E l I I IIHE lllllili! A ril 8, 1952 J. A. MEGLA HOSE HOLDING CLIP Filed NOV. 28, 1949 E||HIHIH IN V EN TOR. cjofifi r4. M'y/a' A r Toe/vex Patented Apr. 8, 1952 UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE 2,592,053 HOSE HQ LDING' CLIP 7 I John A. Megla, Youngstown, Ohio Application November 28, 1949, Serial No. 129,774
hose in position in the washer or tub.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a clip for holding a hose on a washing 'machine or a tub and arranged to kink the hose slightly so as to hold it securely by frictional engagement therewith.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a clip for holding a filling hose and which clip may be formed of two simple stamped metal pieces spot welded to one another or formed of a single piece of metal having portions thereof cutout and turned to form the several portions of the device.
The hose holding clip disclosed herein comprises a simple and inexpensive device which may be easily fabricated from sheet material and which may be used for holding a hose in filling position on a washing machine or laundry tub by simply threading a hose through a portion of the device and positioning the device over the edge of a washing machine tub or laundry tub as the case may be.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side view of a portion of a washing machine tub with parts in cross section showing the hose clipped in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a side view taken on line 2-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the hose holding clip.
Figure 4 is a modified form of the clip showing it formed of a single section of sheet material.
By referring to the drawings and Figures 1, 2 and 3 in particular it will be seen that a portion of a washing machine H1 is disclosed having a cylindrical tub with an inwardly and downwardly turned edge Ii. A filler hose I2 is shown in po- 1 Claim. (Cl. 24879) sition in the washing machine land will .ob-
- viously connect with a water supply source (not shown).
In order that the hose I2 can be held in position in the washer l0 without manually holding the same therein during the filling operation, a clip is engaged upon the washing machine l0 and over the downturned edge ll thereof and upon the hose [2. The clip comprises a pair'of'body members I3 and I4, each of which is of generally U shape and secured together at their basesas by spot weldingthe same to; one another. The arms of the member [3 extend upwardly, one of them being longer than the other and indicated by the numeral I4 and has an opening [5 formed therein near the upper end thereof. The shorter of the arms of the member [3 is indicated by the numeral I6 and it has a transverse arcuate end section which is concave in cross section and indicated in the drawings by the numeral [1.
The transverse plane of the arcuate section I! of the arm is is approximately equal to the widest diameter of the opening l5 in the arm l3 so that a hose positioned therethrough (as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings) will of necessity rise up and over the end of the short arm [6 of the device and then downwardly through the opening win the other arm. This warps the I hose I2 longitudinally sufliciently to hold it against accidental displacement therefrom.
The portion M of the clip comprises a long downturned arm [8 and a shorter downturned arm I 9, the lower end of which is inturned as indicated by the numeral 20. The device may be positioned on a washing machine, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, with the shorter downturned arm l9 and the inturned end 26 thereof engaged over the rim of the washing machine or it may be reversed if the washer has a rim on the outer peripheral edge thereof. The device is operative in either position.
The device is preferably formed as a pair of stampings, as best shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, spot welded to one another at their base sections to form an integral unit. Alternately, it may be formed as disclosed in Figure 4 of the drawings and of a single section of strip material wherein one end forms a long vice in exactly the same manner as the device shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings and heretofore described. A second downturned arm 26 is blanked out of a portion of the longer upstanding arm 22 and the lower edge thereof is inturned as at 21 so that a device capable of being engaged upon a washing machine or laundry tub is thereby formed of a single section of strip metal and at the same time provided with the means for engaging and holding the hose.
It will thus be seen that the invention resides in the particular formation of the hose clip with its pair of spaced downturned arms which may be reasonably flexible so that they may be bent to accommodate various thicknesses of objects upon which the hose clip may be positioned and carrying the two upturned arms, one of which is longer than the other and provided with the opening through which the filler hose is positioned, the other of which is shorter and positioned on approximately the same horizontal plane as the widest diameter of the opening of the longer arm.
It will thus be seen that the several objects of the invention have been met by the household clip disclosed herein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A hose clip formed of a single section. of sheet material, and intermediate transverse section of which is horizontal and one end of which 4 forms a vertical arm standing thereabove and the other end of which forms a vertical arm depending thercbelow, a portion of the said depending arm being cutout and bent upwardly to form a secondary upstanding arm spaced with respect to said upstanding vertical arm, and a portion of the said upstanding vertical arm cutout and bent downwardly to form a secondary downturned arm spaced with respect to said depending vertical arm, an opening formed in the said upstanding arm, the said opening lying partially above and partially below the plane of the end of the secondary upturned arm for receiving a hose and holding the same in arched position over the end of the said upturned arm. the uppermost end of the said secondary upturned arm being transversely concave.
