Application June 11, 1949, SerialNo. 98,544
7 Claims.
This invention relates to a replacement pocket and method of preparing and installing replacement pockets.
My invention is concerned with the provision of a replacement pocket for apparel, such as mens trousers, which may be sold as a unit in notions departments, so that individuals may without an sewing operations, make a replacement for a torn pocket quickly and facilely.
My invention more specifically has for its object the provision of a replaceable pocket, together with a guide and method of replacement which will facilitate the labor of making replacements.
My invention is predicated upon the provision of a method of cutting the remnant of a pocket and employing this remannt as an anchoring means for a prepared pocket. Specifically, my invention provides a method of cutting a torn pocket to leave a remnant of predetermined outline and supplying a prepared pocket having congruently arranged attaching means whereby the replacement pocket and remnant are attached to each other quickly, facilel and without any folds, bulges or wrinkles.
Still more specifically it is contemplated by my invention to provide a replacement pocket in which a preformed pocket has an entrance edge having attaching means of predetermined contour which conforms to a prepared, congruently outlined remnant of an old pocket in. the garment whereby the replacement is to be made whereby quick assembly of the deplacement pocket to the remnant of the old pocket may be effected, without special tailoring training or sewing operations.
To attain these objects and such further objects as may appear herein, or be hereinafter pointed out, I make reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one stage of the method with a pair of trousers, partly broken away to disclose details;
Figure 2- is a magnified perspective view of a second stage of the process;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the replacement pocket in accordance with one form of my invention;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the replacement effected to the remnant of the old pocket;
Figure 5 is a magnified section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the prepared pocket in accordance with another embodiment of my invention.
Summarizing my invention, I intend to provide a replacement pocket and a replacement guiding device whereby the labor of replacing torn pockets for trousers and like garments may be accomplished without any special tailoring training and, in its preferred form, without any sewing operation and involving merely cutting for the preparation of a remnant of the old pocket to correlate a remnant of the original torn pocket with congruently arranged fastening means of 24 replacement pocket, so that the labor of substitution of a predeterminedly shaped pocket may be facilitated.
Making reference to the drawing, I show a pair of trousers It) in which the pocket Ii, having a torn bottom 12, is illustrated as one to be replaced. Initially, I provide a semi-rigid guide pattern card I3 of cardboard, oaktag, and like semi-rigid or stiff foldable material, which may be fitted into the pocket slot or mouth l4 between the upper tacking stay 15 and the lower tacking stay l6 which reinforces the pocket opening. The guide pattern card is provided with an upper slit IT and a lower slit I8 to hold the cutting pattern branches l9 and 20 within the old pocket and to position the guiding edges 2|, 22, 23 and 24 in relatively fixed position while stretching or tautening the mouth l4 of the pocket. It may be found necessary to partially fold the guide I3 in order to insert it into locking position, as will be readily appreciated.
With the guide pattern card 13 in position and distended to lie fiat adjacent the waistband and in opposed relation thereto, the trousers are now turned inside out, as shown in part in Figure 2, to make accessiblethe front face 25 and the rear face 26 of the old pocket. In this position, the old pocket is cut away along the pattern guides provided by the edges 2!, 22, 23, and 24, to provide edges 21, 28, 29 and 3!) for the front face 25 of the pocket and to provide edges 3|, 32, 33 and 34 for the rear edge 26 of the old pocket. The two remnant faces of the old pocket are thereby congruent to the pattern segments [9 and 20 extended to the interior of the pocket.
For the trouser construction just prepared, I provide 'a replacement pocket 35 in which a single piece of fabric is folded along the fold line 36, hemmed or zig-zag stitched along a curvilinear line 37, to leave co-terminous edges 38 and 39 of the layers 40 and 4! open, to leave edges # 52 and 43 disconnected. Bottom edges 44 and 55 as well as side edges 46 and 41 are left unattached, to extend a section of the front and rear faces 40 and M of the pocket for a distance which will overlap the remnants 25 and 26 0f the pocket.
Spaced inwardly from the overlapping edges 38, 39, 42, 43, 44, and 45, I provide locking flaps 48, 49 and 50 on the front face 4| of the pocket and correspondingly positioned locking flaps 5|, 52 and 53 on the rear layer 40, by stitch lines 54 and 55 which follow the contour of the edges 2|, 22, 23 and 24 of the pattern. In the section defined between the rows of stitches and the edges of the replacement pocket previously described, I affix complementarily attached fastening elements 55 and 5?. In the embodiment illustrated, the fastening element 56 may be the female portion of a snap or glove fastener which may be attached to the pocket fabric by sewing, stapling, climbing or any other of the known methods for attachment. The male portion 51 may be provided with a head 58 which is pointed and has fabric piercing qualities.
With the construction of pocket as described and the remnant of the original pocket of the garment arranged as shown in Figure 2, the front panel P being turned back to expose the pocket on the back panel B, the replacement pocket is aflixed to the remnants 25 and 26 by Sliding the edges 38-39, 42-43, 4Lll5, t64l to lie between the pattern is and the opposed remnant, as more clearly shown in Figure 5. The free edges of the remnants 2?, 28, 29 and 39 of the upper section 25 and the free edges 3!, 32, 33 and 34 of the lower segment 26 will be positioned conformingly to the rows of stitches 5d and 55, respectively, and in close proximity thereto. In this position, the locking flaps A8, 59 and 55 are overlapped to pierce the heads 58 of the male fasteners through the remnant underlying the same and into engagement with the female fastener 55 underlying the remnant, while bearing upon the semi-rigid pattern guide l3. Similarly, the tabs 5 i, 52 and 53 are attached to engage the remnant 25. Upon completion of the attachment, the pattern guide 13 is removed and the operation is completed by inverting the trousers, to bring the panel P into normal position.
In Figure 6 I have shown the pocket construction 35 with the flaps 58, 4E, and 5G for the face 41 before applying the locking fastening means, it being understood that other fastening means than snap fasteners may be complementarily positioned on the flaps 49, 49 and 50 and those which are correspondingly applied to the rear surface 56 to effect the quick attachment along predeterminedly prepared remnants of the old pocket by other attaching means. It is contemplated by my invention to sandwich the remnant of the old pocket between a conformingly shaped overlap of the replacement pocket and a locking tab or flap constituting the sections 48, 49 and 55, so that no other preparation of the old pocket is necessary than to out the same along the pattern guide outline l3, to leave a remnant of an outline congruent with the prepared replacement pocket.
By the process described, and with the expedients illustrated, a novel replacement pocket and method of attaching is afforded, avoiding the need for skilled tailoring operations or sewing operations by the use of the fastening elements described.
It will be understood that by the employment of a semi-rigid pattern guide in the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, replacement of parts may be quickly eifected with a construction such as shown in Figure 6, even by a hand sewing operation as the unskilled are thereby supplied with a tautening assembly of the parts to be attached together to assure a smooth and workmanlike job.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In the method of making a replacement of pockets in trousers or the like which involves cutting out the old torn pocket and replacement by a new pocket by attachment of the same to a remnant, the steps which include anchoring a pattern guide of semi-rigid material in the pocket mouth to stretch the mouth of the pocket and severing the old pocket in the stretched condition of the fabric along the guide, to leave a remnant congruent to said guide and before separating the pattern guide attaching the new pocket to the remnant held in the stretched position by the pattern guide,
2. In the method of making a replacement of pockets in trousers or the like which involves cutting out the old torn pocket and replacement by a new pocket by attachment of the same to a remnant, the steps which include anchoring a pattern guide in the pocket mouth to stretch the mouth of the pocket to the shape of the guide and severing the old pocket in the stretched condition of the fabric along the guide, to leave a remnant congruent to the edges of said guide, and while in the stretched condition as aforesaid overlapping a prepared pocket having an open mouth, the adjacent edges whereof have overlapping flaps carrying locking means arranged congruently to the remnants and affixing the remnants between the replacement pocket and the locking flaps.
