UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
RANDOLPH HAYDEN, OF HADDAM, CONNECTIOUT.
ClGAR-REAMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettrs Patent No. 258,919, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed December 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH HAYDEN, of Haddam, in the countyof Middlesex and State of Connecticut., have invented certain new andV useful Improvements in Cigar-Beamers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompauying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
My improvementrelates to implements used for the purpose of making a hole in the end of a cigar previous to lsmoking, so that it will draw freely, without cutting or biting otf the end, as is commonly done.
The object of my invention is to provide a better implement than has heretofore been in use for this purpose, and one which will form a hole by cutting the tobacco without tearing or breaking it.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved cigar-reamer open and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the blade enlarged so as to show the cutting-edges.
A is the handle. This is made tubular, so that the blade can slide within it.
B is the blade. This is sharpened at the end, forming a point for puncturing the end of. the cigar. The blade is grooved on opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby forming the four cutting-edges B', &c. These edges serve to cut the tobacco of which the cigar is made -when the blade is rotated in either direction.
D is a knob attached to the inner end ot' the blade and extending through the slot O in the handle for the purpose of pushing the'blade in or ont. At each end ot' the slot O is a nick,
C', for locking the knob. Thisis done by turning the knob to one side in the manner of a bayonet-joint.
The operation of my invention is asfollows: When it is desired to make a hole in the end of a cigar for smoking, the point ofthe blade is inserted in the extreme tip at the mouth end and pushed inward nearly the length of the blade. The blade is then rotated by means of the handle, which forms a clean hole. The
reamer is then removed, leaving the cigar RANDOLPH HAYDEN.
Witnesses: A
EDWIN F. DIMOGK, THEO. G. ELLIS.
