BY MMQMM Patented Feb. 26, 1952 UNITED 'STATES 1 PATENT QFFICE BABYS PLAY PEN Robert H. Dawson, Longview, Wash.
Application March 15, 1950, Serial No. 149,661
This invention relates to a two-sided play pen the primary object of which is to utilize a corner Wall construction to form a substantially rectangular enclosed play area. l
An important object of the invention is to proviile a two-sided play pen of the character described which can be removably secured upon the Walls of a corner construction and which may be folded against one to occupy a relatively small space when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a play pen which is relatively simple in design and construction, cheap, portable, attractive in appearance, easy to manipulate, and especially adapted for use in small homes and apartments Where space is a problem.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide in combination with a corner wall construction a foldable play pen comprising a pair of rectangular side members hinged together along a pair of corresponding vertical edges to form an inwardly foldable L-shaped frame, means for hingedly and removably securing the free vertical edge of one of said side members to one wall, and means for removably securing the free vertical edge of the other of said side members to the other wall whereby said L- shaped frame forms a rectangular play pen with said corner wall construction.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained'by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present pen shown assembled upon a corner wall construction; y
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the pen showing the same folded against a wall;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 ofFigure 1;
6 Claims. (Cl. 5-99) Indicated at I0 is a wall joined perpendicularly at I2 to a further wall I4 forming a conventional corner construction. The present play pen, which may be fabricated of suitable wood, plastics, aluminum or other light-weight metals, cornprises a two-sided frame I6 which, when assembled, as shown in Figure 1, on the walls forms a rectangular play enclosure.
The pen includes two side members I8 and 26 each consisting of top and bottom bars or rails 22 and 24 joined by conventional rungs 26. The inner vertical end members or edges 28 and 30 are hinged together as at 32 in such a manner that the side member I8 is inwardly foldable in the direction of the arrow 34 (Figure 1) To assist in the folding operation, the bottom rail 24 of the side member I8 carries conventional caster wheels 36 adjacent its bottom corners. When the play pen is unfolded in the position shown in Figure 1, the free vertical end or edge 38 lies adjacent the wall I4 and is removably secured thereto by means of a hook 4D pivoted to the top rail 22 as at 42, the hook being re.- movably received in an eye screw 44 secured in the wall I4.
The frame is removably and pivotally secured to the other wall I0 in the following manner. A bracket or block 46 is secured as by suitable screws 48 to the wall I6, the screws serving also to secure a plate 50 to the block. The plate is formed with spaced, open sleeves or female members 52. Secured to the vertical free end or edge member 54 of the side member 20 are spaced arcuate or L-shaped lugs or male members 56 which are rotatably and removably received in the sleeves or female members, the side member 20 being rotatable in the direction of the arrow 58 (Figure 1). Thus it will be seen that by unlatching the hook 46, rolling the side member I8 lin the direction of the arrow 34 and then pivoting the side member 20 in the direction of the arrow 58, the pen may be folded against the wall I8.
To improve the utility of the play pen, a substantially rectangular base board 60 is hinged as at 62 for vertical movement on the wall I0. A suitable pad 64 may be tacked to the base board and a means is provided for retaining the base board in a horizontal position when the pen is unfolded, this means comprising pegs 66 pivoted vthis art. A more ydetailed description above, and when the play pen is provided with a baseboard, the latter is first folded against the wall and then the side members are folded against each other and linally against the base board as shown clearly in Figure 3. A plastic covering l2 may be placed over the folded pen.
The present two-sided pen may be assembled into a four side movable pen as shown in Figure 6, it requiring two of the units described in connectionvwith FiguresA 1-5. To accomplish this, the vertical end member 33 of each side member I8 will be provided with spaced lugs 56 while the vertical end members 46 of the side members 20 will be provided with spaced sleeves T52 ',(not shown in Figure 6). By making the vertical end members 46 correspond to the'endmembers 38 and engaging the lugs 5,6 in corresponding sleeves 52, a four-sided movable pen such as shown in Figure 6 will be obtained.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it isbelieved that a clear understanding of the devicewill be quite apparent tothoseskilled in 1s -accordingly deemed unnecessary.
'It Vis to be understood, however, that Yeven :though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment ofthe invention the'same Vissusceptible to certain changes fully comprehended. by the spirit-of the invention as herein l-describedandthe scopeof they appended claims.
Having described `the Y invention, what is Vclaimed. as `new is:
t1. In combination with a corner wall 4constructiona foldable play lpen comprising a` pairA of rectangular side members hinged together along "apair of Ycorresponding vertical edges to `form ran inwardly foldable L-shaped frame,
means-'for hingedly and removably securing the free vertical edge of `one Vof said sidemembers to one wall, and means for removably'securing the free vertical-edge ofthe other-of` said lside members to the other wall whereby-said LV-shaped frame forms a rectangular Vplay pen with said corner wall construction.
2.'n combination with' a corner wall construction a foldable play pen comprising a pair of rectangular side members hinged together along a pair Vof corresponding vertical edges to form an inwardly foldable VL-shaped frame, means for hingedly and removably securing the free vertical edgeof one of said side members to one wall, means forremovably securing the free vertical edge of the `other of said side members to the other wall whereby said L-.shaped .frame forms arectangular play pen with saidcorner wall construction and a base board. hinged for .vertical movement on said one wall, said base board cooperating withsai'dwall construction andsaid sidemembers to forma floor supportwithin said play` pen.
tion a foldable play pen comprising a pair of rectangular side members^ hinged together along a pair of corresponding vertical edges to form an 'inwardly foldable L-shaped frame, means for hingedly and removably securing the free vertical edge of one of said side members to one wall,
"meansfor'removably securing the free vertical -gfedge of theother of said side members to the other wall whereby said L-shaped frame forms a Lrectangular play pen with said corner wall construction, said rst-named means including a 'bracket secured to vsaid one wall,.V spaced sleeves infsaidrbracket, and spaced L-shaped-lugsicarried by said free vertical edgeof'rsaidone-.side member removably *receivable and horizontally rotatable `in said sleeves.
-6.In 'combination fwith VaA corner "wall `cnstruction -fa vfoldablel play pen comprising a pair of `rectangular side mem-bers hinged together alongJ a f pair of 1 corresponding vertical; edges to form an inwardly foldable 4ls-shape'd Y-f-rame,
means for hingedly and v"removably securing the 4free'vertical edge of one of said'side members to `one wall, means for removablysecuring the free vertical edge of the other of said side-*members to the other wall-whereby'said L-shaped frame forms a rectangular playpen with'sai'd -corner wall "construction, said 'last-named means -in cluclingv a hook pivotedtov said other 'side member adj acent its` vertical-freeedge tandA atreve' keeper secured to said other wallremovably receiving saidhook.
