- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC JOHN H. BURGESS AND JOHN BANCROFT, OF VASSAR, MICHIGAN.
REVOLVING CADDY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,846, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed March 31, 1882.
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that We,'JOHN H. BURGESS and JOHN R. BANCROFT, of Vassar, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Revolving Caddies; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to revolving caddies or boxes for tea, coffee, and other articles; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. i i
The object of our invention is to construct in a small compass a simple, durable, commodious caddy or box, which mayhave separate compartments for different kinds or grades of goods, and which may be easily revolved, so as to make each compartment accessible when wanted.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a circular box of suitable size, and made of tin, sheet metal, or other material, suitably painted or ornamented, it so desired. Box A is provided with a'c'entral vertical tube, B, and with a series of radial partitions, 0, connecting said tube with the outer wall of the box, which is thereby divided into separate compartments 1), two or more in number, according to the number of partitions 0. Each such compartment is provided with a cover, E, hinged or otherwise suitably attached to the box, and provided, if so desired, with a catch, F, to retain it in a closed position.
G is a vertical shaft or spindle, mounted in (No model.)
a base or sill, H, and forming a support and bearing for the revolving caddy, which is mounted or journaled upon said shaft, as follows:
I is a cap, of wood, metal, or other suitable material, fitted in the tube B, near the upper end of the latter, and having in its under side a recess, J, fitting over the top or point of shaft Gr.
K is a washer, likewise fitted in tube B, near its lower end, and having an opening, L, ofsufficieut size to fit snugly around shaft G. The
sides of the cap I and washer Khave grooves M to receive the wire rods N, which are crossed over the cap, as shown, and extend down vertically through tube B,,their lower ends being bent under and suitably attached to the bottom of box A, as shown at 0. The said wires thus serve to retain the cap I and washer K securely in position in the tube B, where they form the bearings of 'the revolving caddy. By this construction the bearings are made exceedingly firm and substantial, so that the caddy, when turned, will not swing or sway, even if unevenly weighted on opposite sides, and the friction being but slight, it may be turned or revolved with great facility.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the base H, having vertical shaft G, the caddy A, having central vertical tube, B, partitions O, forming compartments D, and doors E, the cap I and washer K, having grooves M, and the wires N, arranged as described, to secure the said cap and washer in the tube B, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN H. BURGESS.
JOHN RBANOROFT. Witnesses:
