The present invention relates to rotary printing presses such as are used in newspaper printing, and refers more particularly to a unit frame construction thereof and auxiliary printing roll and inking train supporting members for use therewith.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to hereinand constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

It is frequently desired to add an extra color printing a cylinder to work against one of the impression cylinders of a printing unit, and various frame constructions both of the printing unit and the auxiliary unit have been developed for this purpose. These constructionsA have usually involved special cap members carrying all the auxiliary equipment, were not very rigid, required removal of all the extra equipment'toI-j gether, and did not permit either the preferred type of impression adjustment in the unit or the preferred oil tight housing surrounding the drive gears of the auxiliary equipment and communieating with corresponding oil tight housing on the unit.
It is an object of the present inventionto'provide an Vauxiliary frame for a color cylinder and its associated inking mechanism 'which shall providel maximum rigidity throughout the. en-
larged unit, as well as preferred impression adjustment and preferred oil tight housing of the drive members thereof.
A further object is to provide a press unit frame embodying preferred impression adjustment and lubrication means and adapted to operate either with or Without the auxiliary equipment.
A further object is that the auxiliary printing cylinder shall be readily removable from the enlarged unit without the necessity of removing the other auxiliary equipment.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the course of the following specication.
In accordance with the illustrative embodiment of the present invention there is provided a press unit the frame members of which have a continuous straight finish across their top portions. Centrally on each side member is located the upper frame member and to either side thereof is a filling block. When it is desired to add a plate cylinder to Work against either impression cylinder of the unit, the upper frame member and the filling blocks above that impression cylinder are removed. In place of the upper frame member a special upper frame member carrying the auxiliary fountain and ink train are inserted. The plate cylinder is carried in antifriction bearings preloaded in eccentric cartridges carried in rectangular frame blocks which slip snugly between the unit framefand auxiliary upper frame, engaging horizontal surfaces of both and a vertical surface of the latter, which thereby rests on the unit frame in part directlyand in part through the frame block.
The outstanding advantage of the above con- Y struction is its rigidity. A further advantage is that preloaded vantifriction bearings may be used throughout and impression adjustment is had through eccentric bearing cartridges.

Referring now in detail to the illustrative embodiment of the invention as shown in the drawings, the press units comprise side frames 5, 6 surmounted diagonally at their corners by caps 1, 8, 9 and a similar cap not shown, the caps being held on the frames by screws I and being eiective to mount thereon the bearing cartridges II of impression-.cylinders I2; I3fand theiec.- centric bearingr cartridges I4 of plate cylinders I5, I6.
