Description

1951 N. H. METTE COLOSTOMY BAG Filed April 26, 1950 INVENTOR.
A mwmm H. METTE AT'roR NE).
Patented Nov. 13, 1951 UNITED STATES FTNT OFFICE COLOSTOMY BAG Norman H. Mette, Detroit, Mich.
Application April 26, 1950, Serial No. 158,300
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a colostomy bag such as shown in my patent application Serial No. 102,240, now Patent No. 2,527,321; the object being to provide a new and improved device for the use of a person having a diseased condition of the rectum or an artificial anus and the device is connected with the coizon having an aperture above the rectum through which excretions may pass into the bag and means for securing the bag in position on a person's body.
These and other features and objects of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred character and relationship of parts is shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the ring for holding the bag over the anus.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an elevation showing a means for supporting the ring assembly in position on a persons body.
Fig. 6 is an elevation showing another means by which the colostomy bag may be secured in position.
In Fig. 5 the colostomy bag and ring member are secured in position by adhesive strips 5, 5, and l, and in Fig. 6 a belt is utilized to support the bag in the desired position on the users body.
The device involves a ring like member I, which may be formed of flexible material, the periphery of which is arcuate in longitudinal cross section, as shown in Fig. 4. The bag 2, which has a rim or annular bead 9 at its open end, is projected up through the ring like member as shown in Fig. 1. The open end of said bag is stretched and folded back over the portion of said ring of greatest diameter as illustrated in Fig. 2, and is then ready for use. The ring has a lower portion of minimum diameter as in Fig. 1, and the body thereof flares upwardly and outwardly defining the circular outer rim of maximum diameter. The bag is preferably formed of a flexible and waterproof material such as sheet rubber and may be disposed of after use. The ring member I and bag 2 may be secured to the body of a person as by adhesive strips 5, 6 and 1 which overlie the ring like member I as shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 6 shows a second modification in which a belt is used to hold the colostomy device on the body of a patient.
The belt 8 is shown in Fig. 6, one end of which is secured to the triangular sheet of suitable material 9 having a circular opening in its center through which the smaller diameter of the ring may pass. The upper edge of triangular member 9 is parted at mid-point and on the right flap of the member 9 is a hook element II and on the 2 posite end of which is to be understood as being attached to the back of the belt 8.
it is believed obvious from the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the drawing that the various features'and objects of the invention are attained by either of the forms thereof which are in the drawing in Figs. 5 and 8.
Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A device for the purpose described comprising a ring like member arcuate in longitudinal cross section and having a hollow body portion terminating in an annular outwardly flared rim, a flexible bag projected up through said body and having a beaded open end, with the latter stretched over and around said rim with said beaded end bearing upon the exterior of said ring like member, and means for supporting said member upon the body of a person.
2. A device for the purpose described comprising a ring like member arcuate in longitudinal cross section and having a hollow body portion terminating in an annular outwardly flared rim, a flexible bag projected up through said body and having a beaded open end, with the latter stretched over and around said rim with said beaded end bearing upon the exterior of said ring like member, a belt, means for detachably securing the opposite ends of the belt together consisting of a substantially triangular sheet of material, the belt having its opposite ends connected with opposite sides of the base of said sheet, said sheet having a central circular opening to receive the body portion of said member, the base of said sheet being split to its opening defining a pair of attachable upper ends, and means for removably attaching said free ends to thereby maintain the bag and ring like member in position upon the body of a person.
