This invention relates to pumps, and particularly to improvements in the arrangement of indicating dispensing pumps for fuels and similar fluids, such as gasoline, kerosene, naphtha, and the like. This application is a division of my pending application, Serial No. 74,961, filed February 7, 1949, and assigned to the same assignee as the instant patent.
Pumps of the nature referred to are pumps principally used in filling stations and comprise a pumping and metering mechanism together with a computer and indicator connected with the meter for indicating the amount of liquid dispensed and the total cost thereof. The pumps are generally housed in a panelled enclosure, preferably being locked to the frame by some suitable locking mechanism, so that only authorized persons can remove them for adjustment of the pump auxiliaries within the enclosure.
Pumps of this nature ordinarily include a totalizing indicator that indicates the total amount of liquid dispensed by the pump as well as the total cost of the liquid over any predetermined period. The provision of a totalizing indicator of this type is necessary in order to maintain a check on the pump operators, the suppliers of the liquid and the records of sales as indicated by the cash register receipts.
One of the particular objects of this invention is to provide, in connection with a pump of the type referred to, an arrangement whereby only authorized persons can take readings from the totalizing indicator referred to.
Another object is the provision of a masking device for the totalizing indicator, for the type of pump referred to, which can only be moved to its indicator disclosing position by use of a key whereby only authorized persons can read th indicator.
A particular object of this invention is a provision, in a pump of this type having removable panels locked thereto, of amasking device and the totalizing indicator of the pump which can only be moved to indicator disclosing position by the unlocking of one of the panels of the pump.
The foregoing object and other objects have advantages which will become more apparent upon reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring to the drawings somewhat more in detail, a pump constructed according to my invention generally comprises a base member in having side panels mounted therein, as indicated at 12, and also having front and rear panels, as indicated at M. These last mentioned panels are apertured as at It so that the indicating faces it of the pump can be viewed. The outer enclosing structure of the pump is completed by a covering dome member 2!]. These several parts will be best seen in the perspective view Figure l.
The interior of the pump comprises the frame work which supports the panels referred to above, and which also supports the operating auxiliaries of the pump, such as the pump proper, its drive motor, the meter, and the computer and indicator mechanism.
There are angle members positioned at the corners of the base and are secured thereto by means of the posts 24 upstanding from the said corners of the base l8. Bolts 26 pass through these posts and the webs of the angles 22. This post arrangement and the manner in which it is secured to the corner angles will also be seen in Figures 4 and 5.
The upper ends of the corner angles are connected by a top plate 28 which not only rigidly joins the said angles, but also serves as a supporting means for certain of the pump auxiliaries and as a support for the dome member 28. The bolts 30 may be provided for interconnecting the top plate 28 and the corner angles, shown.
Referring now to Figures 4 and 5, it will be noted that the side panels [2 have marginal flanges extending along the side edges thereof, as indicated at 42, and which secure the said panels to the corner angles 22 as by means of bolts.
The upper ends of the side panels l2, as will best be seen in Figure 3, are formed inwardly and then upwardly, as indicated at 48, so as to telescope with the dome member 20 of the pump housing. This telescoping of the side panels with the dome member not only gives a positive interlock between the said panels and dome member,
but also provides for a weather seal, preventing moisture and foreign matter from readily entering the inside of the pump housing.
The front and rear panels of the pump, namely, those indicated at I4 and comprising the windows It through which the indicator faces I8 of the pump are visible, are formed so that their side portions enclose the marginal flanges 42 of the side panels I2, as indicated at 50, in Figures 4 and 5. It will be noted in these figures that the marginal portions of the front and rear panels I4 are rolled completely around, and this assists in stiffening the panels and giving them a better appearance.
The front and rear panels each carry on their bottom parts a pair of pilot pins which are adapted for entering bores in the base member I 0. This aligns and positively locates the panels I4 when they are placed in position on the pump frame.
Adjacent their upper ends, each of the front and rear panels I4 carries at each side a neckedin stud best illustrated at 55 in Figure 6. When the panels I4 are mounted in position the studs 55 extend through the apertures 55 in the marginal flanges of the side panels I4 and the brackets 58 bolted to the corner channels 22 and engage the spring clips I30 mounted on the backs of the brackets 58. When the pilot pins are in their bores and the necked-in studs 55 are snapped in their retaining clips, the front and rear panels of the pump are supported in the position in which they appear in the drawings.
As mentioned before, the front and rear panels I4 are adapted for being locked in position by a key operated. mechanism. This portion of the pump is best illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. In these views it will be noted that each of the panels I4 has secured to the inside face of its turned-in edge part a channel member 96 which opens toward the outer face of the panel. This channel, it will be noted, is adapted, when the associated panel I4 is mounted in position on the pump, to enter the cut-out notches 98 provided for that purpose in the adjacent webs of the angles 22 and the marginal flanges of the side panels I2. Each of the angles 22 carries a retaining clip I00 which has an end part adapted to extend through the aperture I02 provided therefor in the aforementioned channel 96 when the channel is placed in the notch 98.
The channel 96 reciprocably supports a. pair of plungers I04, the ends of which are adapted for engagement with the turned over ends of the clips I00. ported at their outer ends by the apertured brackets I06 and are pivotally connected at their inner ends to the bar I08 which is fastened to the locking mechanism IIO so as to be rotated by a key placed therein. It will be apparent that rotation of the locking mechanism I I0 will either engage the plungers I04 with the clips I00 or disengage the plungers from the said clips. The panels I4 can thus be removed from the pump frame only when the proper key for the lock H0 is available. Since the panels I4 are interlocked with the panels -I2 and the dome part 20, it follows that none of the panels or the dome can be removed except when the proper key is available.
The indicator face visible from the right side of the pump as it is drawn in Figure 1 is illustrated in Figure 3 and on this side there is a totalizing counter, the dials of which are indicated at II2. This masking member is pivoted at II6 behind the face of the indicator, and a chain H8 is connected for moving the masking member between its two positions. The end of the chain H8 is connected to one arm of the bell crank lever I20 which is also pivoted behind the indicator face of the pump and which includes another arm extending downwardly as at I22 and through an opening I24 in the adjacent channel 96. The arm I22 through the opening I24 lies close beside one of the plungers I04, and on this plunger there is a collar I26 adapted for abutting theside of the said arm. Upon reference to Figure 5, it will be noted that when the plungers I04 are withdrawn to their unlocked position, the masking member is moved to position to expose the indicating dials II2. However, when the plungers I04 are moved outwardly into their panel locking position, the said masking member is dropped into the position indicated by the dot-dash outline in Figure 2, and thus conceals the indicating dials from observation. It is, therefore, necessary to operate the lock H0 in order to be able to observe the indicating dials II2. This insures that only authorized individuals having keys for the pump will be able to observe the totalizing indicators.
The features of this invention are all more particularly set forth in the appended claims, and it will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications in construction and proportions, and such substitution of equivalents, as may be considered to come within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an indicating dispensing pump having a windowed panel releasably retained in position by a key operated locking mechanism and also having a totalizing indicator viewable through said window, the combination of a masking member for concealing said indicator, and means connecting said masking member with said locking mechanism whereby said member can be moved into its indicator revealing position only upon operation of said mechanism by the key therefor.
2. In an indicating dispensing pump having a windowed panel releasably retained in position by a key operated locking mechanism, and also having a totalizing indicator viewable through the window in the panel, the combination of a masking member adjacent said indicator and movable to conceal or reveal said indicator, an element connected with said member for moving it between its two positions, and means associated with said locking mechanism operable, upon said mechanism being unlocked by its key, to actuate said element to move said member into its indicator revealing position.
3. In an indicating dispensing pump having a windowed panel releasably retained in position by a key operated locking mechanism, and also having a totalizing indicator view-able through the window in the panel, said mechanism including a reciprocable plunger, the combination of a masking member adjacent said indicator and movable to conceal or reveal said indicator, an element connected with said member for moving it between its two positions, and means on said plunger operable to engage said element and move said member into its indicator revealing position upon unlocking of said mechanism by itskey. l I g 4. In a dispensing pump having a face with a totalizing indicator and a windowed panel locked to the pump by a key operated mechanism including reciprooable plungers, the combination of a masking member pivoted behind said face and movable to conceal or reveal said indicator, a pivoted lever having one end connected with said member and its other end extending to adjacent one of said plungers, and a collar on said one plunger operable to engage said lever and to move it so as to move said member into indicator revealing position upon unlocking of said mechanism by its key.
5. In a dispensing pump having a face with a totalizing indicator and a windowed panel locked to the pump by a key operated mechanism including reciprocable plungers, the combination of a masking member pivoted behind said face and movable to conceal or reveal said indicator, a pivoted lever having one end connected with said member and its other end extending to adjacent one of said plungers, and a collar on said one plunger operable to engage said lever and to move it so as to move said member into indicator revealing position upon unlocking of said mechanism by its key, said member falling by gravity to its concealing position upon locking of said mechanism.
6. In a dispensing pump having a dial face, an elongated slot in the face, a totalizing indicator behind the dial visible through the slot, a mask pivoted behind the dial and also having an elongated slot therein, said mask being movable from a position where it conceals said indicator to another position where the slots are in register and the said indicator is exposed, a removable panel for the pump, key operated locking means for retaining the panel in place on the pump, and a connection from the locking means to the mask such that the mask will move to the said other position only when said means is unlocked.
7. In a dispensing pump; a dial face having a pair of elongated slots, totalizing indicators behind the dial positioned to be viewed through the slots, a mask pivoted between the dial and indicators and provided with an elongated slot, said mask having one position where its slot is between the slots in the dial and the imperiorate part of the mask covers the indicators and the mask having a second position where its slot registers with one of those in the dial and the other slot in the dial is beyond the edge of the mask thereby exposing the indicators, a panel on the pump, locking plunger means to releasably hold the panel in place on the pump, and a connection from the plunger means to the mask so 6 the mask is moved to its second position only when the plunger means are in panel releasing position.

In a dispensing pump; a dial face having a pair of elongated slots, totalizing indicators behind the dial positioned to be viewed through the slots, a mask pivoted between the dial and indicators and provided with an elongated slot, said mask having one position where its slot is between the slots in the dial and the imperforate part of the mask covers the indicators and the mask having a second position where its slot registers with one of those in the dial and the other slot in the dial is beyond the edge of the mask thereby exposing the indicators, a panel on the pump, locking plunger means to releasably hold the panel in place on the pump, and a connection from the plunger means to the mask so the mask is moved to its second position only when the plunger means are in panel releasing position, there being a key operated device for actuating said plunger means.

In a dispensing pump; a dial face having a pair of elongated slots one above the other, totalizing indicators behind the dial positioned to be viewed through the slots, a mask between the dial and indicators pivotal about a point to one side of the slots and provided with an elongated slot, said mask having a lower position of adjustment about its pivot where its slot is between the slots in the dial and the imperforate part of the mask covers the indicators and the mask having a second position of adjustment about its pivot where its slot registers with one of those in the dial and the other slot in the dial is beyond the edge of the mask thereby exposing the indicators, a removable panel on the pump, key operated movable means for releasably retaining the panel on the pump, and a connection from the key operated movable means to the mask operable to move the mask to its second position when the movable means is unlocked to permit release of the panel from the pump, and to release the mask to move to its first position when the movable means is locked to hold the panel on the pump.
