Description
Oct. 2, 1951 F. L. TWlTT-Y COMBINATION COMB AND BRUSH Filed March 21, 1950 R N M Mr .w 14. v M w m Patented Oct. 2, 1951 UNITED. STATES COMBINATION me-Assi nees Frank L. my: Bronxville, N. Y.
Application March 21,195d,siarmtisasesj l gThe invention which ishere disclosed relates to combination brush and comb structures. and objects of the invention are .to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive construction in which the comb and brush elements can be quickly slipped into and out of position in a combined back and handle support and which wil be of compact, attractive formation, free of objectionable projections and generally desirable for the purposes indicated.
Special objects of the invention are to provide the brush units in a simple, inexpensive, practical form which can be used either in association with or removed from the supporting back or holder.
Other desirable objects and the novel features of construction, combination and relation of parts through which the purposes of the invention are attained are set forth or will appear in the course of the following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates the general and specific features of the invention but it will be appreciated that structure may be modified and changed as regards the immediate illustration, all within the true intent and broad scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Figure 1 in the drawing is a side elevation illustrating one of the new brush and comb combinations.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is an end view.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view as on substantially the plane of line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the back or holder, with the handle indicated broken away.
Figure 6 is a broken part sectional detail of one of the brush elements.
In Figures 1 and 2, the holder or back is shown as a transversely widened member 1 having a central longitudinally extended dovetail grooveway 8 to receive a correspondingly shaped comb element 9 and longitudinally extending cylindrical grooveways ill, with open slots II at opposite sides of the same to receive the tubular cylindrical members I2 of the brushes [3.
The latter are shown as having twisted wire cores 14 having reversely bent end portions l5 engaged in the ends of the tubular members 12.
These tubes 12 stiffen and reinforce the helically twisted brush elements and provide substantial supports for firmly but removably anchoring the brush elements in the back or holder I with the angu larly, turned end portions I 5 of the brush. cores disposed and held in the open slots ll forming the. entrance throats to the cylindrical grooves);
While the cylindrical supporting elements HI are shown as continuous tubes, it is contemplated that these may be of longitudinally or helically split formation so as to exert a spring tensioned holding engagement in the grooveways In.
The angled end portions l5 of the brush cores by engagement in the open slots ll hold the brushes in angled relation spaced at oposite sides of the comb, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, and with the brush bristles tensioned in engagement with opposite sides of the comb; thus to some extent interlocking the brushes with the comb and preventing accidental separation of any of these elements from the back or holder.
However, if desired, either the comb or either or both the brush elements may be separated from the back by a simple sliding operation, and similarly, either or any one of these members may be inserted back in the holder by a simple sliding engagement of the same in the undercut grooveway 8 or It! provided to receive the same.
The construction disclosed provides a simple, rugged organization, which may be used for combing or brushing operations and one which may be varied to suit any particular desire as to combing, brushing, curling, massaging or the like. One or both the brush members may be removed to leave the comb alone or the comb may be slipped out of place and one or both the brushes be used. The brushes may be slipped out of place and used as separate elements for massaging or treating the scalp and then be restored to the holder for combined use either with or without the comb in place between the same. Brush units of difierent bristle grades or stiffness may be readily substituted and similarly, comb elements of different character may be slipped into place in the holder.
The invention thus provides for a great variety of possibilities, all in a simple, low cost combination of attractive, compact form. The frictional engagement of the tubular backs of the brushes assures the holding of the brushes in place even under heavy pressure such as may be employed for massaging and rubbing the scalp, and as before stated, the tubular elements may be of spring-like character to tension their frictional holding engagement in the grooveways.
In practice the brush and comb combination may be sold with a series of different brush elements, such as a shampoo brush with nylon bristles and a similar brush with stiffer bristles which may be used as a head scratcher and to remove dandrufi flakes from the scalp; also a similar :brush with natural bristles for use as a nail brushaand for general scrubbing or utility purposes. These several different kinds of brushes may be sold separately, to be used as such 1.
brush back and handle havinglon'gitudinally' extending, closely spaced, substantially parallel dercut grooveways in the" lower face of the same :with narrow(slotsv opening .from. the grooveways through theunderface. oirthe, fiat back and handle, brush'and comblelements slidably and removably engaged in said undercutrgrooveways in closely, adjoining side-by-side relation, said brush 7 elements having wire cores 1 with the ends of the cores bent angularly into oposing relation, substantially cylindrical tubular members engaged over said opposed, angularly bent end portions of the cores, the undercut grooveways for holding said brush elements being substantially circular in cross section to frictionally receive and hold said cylindrical tubular members and the angularly bent end portion of the cores extending through said narrow, open slots and .being thereby held by said slots andlprojecting from the underface of the back in closely adjoining relation to the comb element.
