The present invention deals with: borderaiacers of the type commonly employ-edto provide a perforated edge or border around a coupon or other element which is intended to be cutor torn from a newspaper; magazine or comparable periodical 5 At the presenttime it iscommon.practiceinthe V field of; merchandising include in. advertise- .ments a coupon the" customer is supposed to remove from the paper.

However, at the present time there is no practical method or machine ioriorming. the notches in the edge of the type .bar, thecommonpractice heiiig..j .touse a saw or omen-comparable instrument which entails a laboridusmanual. operation. I
"The present invention has inview as itszfore' most objective the .provisionof a new and improved method and apparatus for forming the zs notches inthe edgeofatype bar. 7 ...'More. indetailvthe invention has as an object the provision of an apparatus including a.serrated or toothed wheel. which isiadapted to'engage one end of a type 'bar,; together:withinstru-,.
men'tallties for causing the bar. to" be pressed" against the wheelunder pressure'so" that asj'the bar moves the wheel rotatesand'iormsthenotches desired.
Yet another-object. of the invention is the provision, in a border fac'erpf the character inchcated, of. means for applying pressure to the bar" as it .passes over the serrated'roll. .This means is preferably located substantially oppositeto the .in a casting machine. It is 'b'elievedthat great ad.-
vantages, from thegpractical viewpoint; can be; achieved if. the instrumentalities for forming the" notches are mounted directly on a casting machine.
Thus, a further object of the invention. lies in theprovision of avcasting machine ioithe type commonly employed to form typebars, together with-means for forming notches in the edge of thebar and which means is automatically oper- Dayton, Ohio Various other more detailed objects and advantages of the invention .such as: arise in connection with carrying out the above noted ideas in a practical embodiment will in part become apparent and in part'be hereinafter stated as the description of the invention proceeds.
The invention therefore comprises a method and apparatus for'forming notchesin the edges of astype bar and which apparatus consists essentiallyioi a serrated wheel. together with means forpressing a type bar. thereagainst under pressure. The wheel. and the pressure means may be .inciudedas a part'of a type bar casting machine.
For a iullandmore complete u'nderstanding'of the invention reference maybe had toithe following description and accompanying drawings wherein:
. Figure 1 is a perspective view of a'hand device which is made in accordance with the precepts of this invention; A
Figure 2 is a verticalsection taken about on a plane represented by thehne 2 -2 onFigur'e 1;
'in'Figure' 3;
. Figure 7 is avertical section through a modified 1 form of the manually operable device;
Figure 8 is a perspective of a portion'of a casting machine and-particularly that 'port'ion on which the notch fornfingdevice of this invention may be mounted; 1
Figure 9 is an enlarged *perspective'of a portion of the instrumentalities which are ad-dedto the castingma chine', and
Figure 10'is a vertical section through the mounting for the serrated roller.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein like ref erence' characters denote corresponding parts, and first more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, a manually operable hand device embodying the precepts of this invention is "shown as-comprising a'main body memberB, which isform'ed with a bottom l0, from which upstands side walls II and I2, whichare arrangedin'spaced relation and which define a slot. that open at each end.
.As is more elearlyshown in Figure 2 the walls l l and" are formed with openings 1'3 which are in alignment and-which tareiin'ed with "bearing sleeves l4. "Trunnions" I 5 :are; journaled in these counter-bore 25 about one of the bolts '21. 1 upper end of each spring bears against the head midway of the roll |6. The outer end of the screw 7 l9 carries an operating member in the form of a wing nut 2! which may be availed of to rotate the screw 9 and thus adjust the position of theplate The top face of each of the side walls I I and 12 is formed with a plurality of threaded sockets 22.
A cover block 23 has-its underface formed with a slot 24 which lies substantially opposite tothe space between the flange I! and plate 20.
This cover block is formed with a plurality of passages 25 which align with the sockets 22 in the upper faces of the sidebars H and I2. As illustrated in thedrawing, there are four of these passages 25 and, of course, a corresponding number of threaded sockets 22, one being located at each corner of the block 23. Obviously, this number may be variedas occasion demands.
Each of the passages 25 is enlarged to provide a counter-bore 25,'and a bolt 27 having a head 28 is received in each of these counter-bores. Each bolt .27 passes through a passage 25 and has a threaded tip 29 that is screwed into one of the sockets 22. v v d An expansion coil spring 35 is mounted in each The Obviously, these springs 21 will' 4 face is shown in Figures 3 and 6, in which the roll is designated |6b.
First modification Figure 7 shows a form of device which is somewhat modified from that shown in Figures 1 and 2. It will be recalled that in the latter construction the entire cover block 23 is urg ward the main body member. In the form of ,the invention illustrated inFigure 7 the pressure roll 3| has its trunnions 32 received in slides 35 which are mounted for vertical movement in the cover block 23. Expansion coil springs 33 urge the slides downwardly and thus cause the pressure roll 3| to move against the upper edge of serrated roll 45.
A type bar is designated 33 and this bar has a lower edge 34which is to be formed with notches or teeth. In forming these notches or teeth the bar 33 is passed between the serrated roll l6,
. and the pressure roll-'2 4, the latter being mounted in the block 23, is urged downwardly by the influence of the springs 30 and thus exerts yielding pressure on the bar 33 as it passes over the serrated roll I 6.
In order to insure that the bar 33 is properly heldin an upright position, the plate 20 may be adjusted so that the space between this plate and the flange II, which receives the bar 33, is of proper dimensions to accommodate the bar and at the same time maintain it in an upright position.
serrations on the cylindrical surface. 7
Still another modified form of serrated surthe-v typebar 33 under yielding pressure.
Second modification A portion of a casting machine is illustrated in Figure 8. The casting machine is referred to 'in its entirety by the reference character C. It
blocks represented at 40, after which it may ,be-
come subject to the instrumentalities provided 'in accordance with thisinvention.
The bed' or' frame of the casting machine is represented at 4|. Mounted on this irame' is a bracket 42 havin-g an upstanding flange 43. Carried by the latter is a plate 44 which carries a v The particular mounting of the latter will be later described in detail.
The bar 39 which iscontinuously formed in the mold- 38 passes over the-serrated roll 45 and is urged thereagainstunder pressure by a roll 46 which engages the top edge of the bar. The
"latter is mounted on an arm 4'! that is carried by the flange 43.
,Upon referring to Figures 9 and 10, the particular mounting of the serrated roll"'45 'w ill be described. This serrated roll 45 is shown "in the form of anannular ring which is positioned over a stud 43 and. held thereon by a washer 49 and a screw 50. The stud 48 extends outwardly from a circular hub 5|, and it is important to note that the axis of the stud 48 is eccentric with respect tothe axis of the hub 5|". The latter is rotatably received in a circular recess 52 formed in the plate 44 so that rotationof' the hub 5| will vary the effective position ofjthe serrated roll 45.
In order to accomplish this rotation of the hub 5| the latter is formed on its peripheral edge with a semi-circular groove 53 which is formed with threads. A screw 54 is screwed into a threaded bore in the plate 44 and which bore is represented by the broken lines at 55.
The bore 55 and screw 54 are tangentially disposed with respect to the hub 5|. Thus the screw 54 meshes with the threads of the semi-circular groove 53. The exposed end of thescrew 54 is slotted as shown at 56 which facilitates its'rotation by a suitable tool, such as a screwdriver.
Thus, as the screw 54.is rotated the hub 5| is imparted a corresponding rotation to adjust the effective position of'the serrated roll 45.
While preferred specific embodiments of the invention are hereinbefore set forth, it is to" be clearly understoodthat the invention is not to be limited to the exact constructionsfdevices and mechanisms illustrated and described, be-
7 cause various modifications of these details may be provided in putting the invention into practice within the'purview of the appended'claim. What is claimed is:
In a device for forming notches in the edge of a type bar, the combination of, a main block having upstanding side walls defining a central channel, a serrated roll journalled in said side walls and extending transversely of said channel, one of said side walls having an inwardly extending flange positioned above said roll, a plate within said slot adjustably supported by the other of said side walls for movement relative to said flange and disposed substantially in hori-- zontal alignment with said flange, said plate and said flange defining a slot adapted to receive a type bar, a top block separable from said main block for relative movement therebetween and having depending side walls defining a central 1 roll, guide means extending between said blocks for guided movement of said top block relative to said main block, and spring means engaging said top block yieldably urging the same toward said main block whereby to apply pressure upon a type bar placed between said rolls.
