PAINT CONTAINER HOLDING DEVICE Filed April 8, 1947 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 WVENTOR Gerald W- Shinnemon ATTORNEY Aug. 14, 1 51 G. w. SHINNEMAN PAINT CONTAINER HOLDING DEVICE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 8, 1947 ATTORNEY INVENTOR Gerald Sh'mnemcm Patented Aug. 14, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAINT CONTAINER HOLDING DEVICE Gerald W. Shinneman, Detroit, Mich., assignor to John T. Stahl, Detroit, Mich.
Application April 8, 1947, Serial No. 740,141
Claims. (01. 248211) 'tion. of an improved supporting bracket which will rigidly hold a paint receptacle, or other similar container in a certain positioned plane other than the vertical and which can be adapted for use upon an upright on either the right hand side, or the left hand side of a ladder.
Another object of this invention is the construction of a novel supporting device which firmly supports a receptacle from the bottom of such pail so as to carry the load thereat and which has adjustable means to enable it to accept a container of any height.
A further object of this invention is the construction of a bucket supporting bracket which is laterally displaced from a gripping or clamping attachment so as to serve as a handle for the combination, or a positioning means in an effort to facilitate convenient access thereto.
A further object of'this invention is the construction of a supporting device for a paint receptacle in combination with a paint brush clamping device which will hold such paint brush in a position where it is easily accessible for use and also gather and reclaim any paint which may drip therefrom.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a paint pail hanging device which affords easy access into the pail opening to one standing on a ladder by reason of its having been tilted from the vertical at a convenient angle therefor wherein it will present a maximum opening from the painters point of approach.
A still further object of the invention is the construction of a novel container and brush supporting device which is simple in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture and use, positive in action, and with greater serviceability, and with a general improvement in th art.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations and construction as will be hereinafter described in a preferred embodiment and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of such container supporting device. Figure 2 is a perspective view of the brush supporting clamp which is positioned to extend" over such container. Figure 3 is a perspective view of an extensible supporting arm which is part of the adjustable clamp.
Similar numerals refer to similar. parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing in Figure 1 which shows 'a preferred embodiment of my invention:
I designates a U-shaped bracket which will fit snugly over the right upright of an ordinary ladder with the cut-away section on the one side of the bracket engaging a rung of such ladder and firmly positioning the same at such height and being locked thereat by the fingerlock pawl 8. The extensible arm 2 serves as a clamping member wherein the lower end thereof 1 is bent in the form of a hook or at right angles thereto, to serve as a support so as to engage the bottom of a container and thereby carry the load thereby. The U-shaped clamp 3 engages the other extremity of the container through one of its legs, and when the pressure is brought to .bear by turning the thumb screw 4 which is taken up through the threaded nut 6 and transmitted through the washer 5 whereupon the other leg of the U-clamp acts as a fulcrum. This arrangement fixedly secures and positions the container in relation to said angleplate bracket at an angle displaced from the vertical not more than 45.
In Figure 2 the spring clamp support bar 9 holds and positions the telescoping spring clamp H] in a desirable relation over the aforementioned paint container.
' Figure 3 demonstrates the adjustable feature of the supporting arm ll wherein the hook I engages the bottom of the paint container and is positioned laterally from the U-clamp by sliding the outer strap downwardly along the inner strap is constrained by the rivet l3 and the wing-nut and bolt assembly l2 slideably attached to mutually parallel slots in said straps.
While the device as shown in Figure l is especially adapted for use by a right-handed person on the right-hand side of a ladder, a similar device complementing the same, wherein the metal stampings are made so as to form a mirror image of the device as above illustrated will lend itself for use on the left hand side of a supporting ladder, and will thus be particularly adapted for use by a left-handed person.
The advantageous features of my invention lie in the fact that this hanging bracket has externally postive gripping means and is adjustable so as to accommodate a container of any length and it also positively positions such container so that its main axis may be constrained at a predetermined angle displaced from such vertical plane not to exceed 45 from the vertical, whichever offers greatest facility for the purpose at hand. Also that it contains in combination therewith a spring clip paint brush holding clamp mounted on the tension means and positioned in such way as will collect the drippingsiof paint from the brush into the pail over which it is placed and also to make the handle of the brush conveniently accessible when ready for use.
What I claim is:
1. A container supporting device comprising a clamping arm bent on one extremity thereof to; form a base support therefor and having aloop formed on the other end thereof projecting in the. other direction, a U-shaped angle plate bracket including a cut-out portion to accommodate a ladder rung and attached at a predetermined angle other than the vertical thereto, a U-clamp mounted on said laterally displacing loop on the end oppositeto the supporting base, and thumb screw, washer and nut means to actuate said U- clamp.
2. In a paint container hanger the combination of a. clamping arm hooked on oneeend thereof, a. U-shaped angle plate mounting bracket attached thereto including a cut-out sectionfor ladder supporting means, and clamping means attached on the side .of and parallel-to theisa-id clamping arm so as to extend within. such container and hold the same firmly againsttheex- 'tensible clamping arm.
' 3. In a paint receptacle supporting device,'.the combination of a U-shaped bracket including a 4 cut-away portion thereof to adapt it to mounting means, adjustable container clamping means fixedly attached with relation thereto to effect an angle of to from the base of said mounting bracket on its downward side.
4. In a paint container hanging device the combination of a U-shaped bracket having a cut-out portion in the face of one leg of such bracket adapted to engage the rung of a ladder,
a clamping arm laterally displaced from such bracket, and a U-clamp mounted on a cross mem- .-..ber connecting the clamping arm to the bracket and. utilizinga section thereof as a fulcrum to support aforesaid U-clamp.
.5. In a bucket hanging device in combination with an extensible clamping arm hooked on one extremity thereof and provided with a U-shaped clamp to comprise the other extremity thereof, tension means acting upon such U-shaped clamp, a U-shaped angle plate bracket for mounting means, the connecting members laterally displacingsuCh clamping arms and mounting bracket.
