Application March 28, 1947, Serial N o. 737,833
1 claim. 1
The invention relates to a manicuring device for the care of fingernails and cuticles.
It is an object of the invention to provide a hollow or tubular body in the nature of a thimble which is adapted to permit ling of fingernails and treating of cuticles preparatory to cutting them.
It is a further object to provide a tubular member closed at the top and adapted to serve as a manicuring device.
It is also an object to adapt caps for phials and lipstick covers to be utilized as a manicuring device.
With these and other objects in view which become apparent from a disclosure of the invention, the latter comprises the means described in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the claim forming a part thereof, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a thimble held by a hand, and shown in use for the treatment of the fingernail of the other hand.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a thimble constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 3 is an elevational View of the thimble with parts broken away to disclose interior construction.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of slight modication. f
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a phial provided with a cap constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 6 shows in elevation a lipstick holder and closure therefor to which the invention has been applied, and
Fig. '7 is an elevational view of a further modication.
Referring to the several views in the drawing I0 generally designates a manipulating member or thimble which comprises a tubular body portion II and a slightly arched top I2. The open end of the body portion has a round-walled opening which is flared outwardly as at I3 to provide a flange or rim, the purpose of which will appear.
The top I2 is provided with a serrated or abrasive surface Ill in the nature of a coarse file and the outer surface of the body portion is provided with an abrasive surface l5 which is in the nature of a i'lne le.
The body portion I I tapers slightly and on the inner surface a serrated surface I6 is provided which is in the form of an annulus and extends from the lowermost end of the body portion a or circular le.
The use of the device, is obvious but it may be pointed out that the surface I4 is used to produce the initial filing of the nail which is then followed up by applying the surface I5. The ring surface I6 is utilized for effecting the rounding of the nail as indicated in Fig. 1.
In view of the taper of the inner surface various sizes of nails may be effectively shaped.
The terminal edge I7 of the flare or rim I3 is rather sharp and is utilized as a curvilinear cuticle knife to loosen and push back the cuticle preparatory to cutting the same.
The modification shown lin Fig. 4 differs from the previously described embodiment of the invention in that a serrated surface I8 extends from the edge I 1 to a considerable distance thereabove whereby a greater number of different sized nails may be shaped.
In the devices of both Figs. 3 and 4 the serrated portions I6 and I8 are preferably formed on ring inserts, the inner surfaces of which aii'ord files of concave contour, to file the fingernails along a line of convex curvature for rounded shaping.
The modification shown in Fig. 5 shows a phial r 26 whose cap 2I is provided with serrated surfaces 22 and 23 to afford a coarse and a fine le.
The modification shown in Fig. 6 discloses a lipstick container or holder 24 adjustable holding a lipstick 25 and a closure cap 26 therefor which also has serrated surfaces 21 and 28 to provide respectively a coarse and fine file.
Ihe modification shown in Fig. '7 discloses a thimble 30 which is identical with the thimble I0 except that it is provided with a plurality of fine slits 3I which originate at the lowermost edge I1 and extend vertically to a point near the horizontal center of the body portion Il. The lower end of the thimble is thus resilient and may be contracted or expanded.
The drawing shows several embodiments of the invention by way of example and not by way of limitation. A
All changes, alternations and modifications are included which 'constitute departures within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A manicuring device comprising a manipulating member in the form of a substantially inflexible tube having at least one open axial end and an outwardly flaring rim at said axial end, said rim being beveled at its outer edge to define a curvilinear cuticle-treating formation, an annulus tted into said member and secured adjacent the open end and said rim thereof and having inner surface portions serrated to provide a concave file surface, said annulus having an axial end portion ared outwardly against the inner face of said ange on the manipulating member.
