UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD oeannnnn, on ABlNGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HEEL-PLATE EOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,311, dated April 11, 1882.
- Application filed October 19, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARDG. GARDNER, of Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Heel-Plates for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, land exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, inwhich similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improve- Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the metallic plate. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the leather filling. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the metal plate and leather filling, showing the said filling pressed into'place.
The object of this invention is to promote thedurability of heel-plates, preventthem from injuring floors and carpets, and connect the leather filling securely with the metal plate.
The ilwention consists in a inetallic heelplate made with a thick rim, having a smooth outer or wearing surface and a depressed or thin middle part, provided at a little distance from the rim and parallel therewith with studs, as will be'hereinafter'fully described.
A represents the metal part of my improved heel-plate. The metal plateA is made with a circumferential flange and a depressed middle 'place and at the same time make the heel ornamental.
. Upon the surface of the depressed middle part of the plate A are formed projections or studs 0, which may he made starshaped, as shown in Fig.1, or heart-shaped, or of any other ornamental form. The studs 0 are arranged in a line parallel with the edge of the plate A, as shown in Fig. 1. Four (more or less) of the studs 0 may be omitted and holes able material, and has its edge recessed to correspond with the contiguration of the inner side of the flange of-the plate A. The filling" B has holes formed through it corresponding in position with the positions of the studs 0 and the holes for the nails D, and corresponding in shape with the form of the studs 0 and the heads of the nails D. The filling B is pressed into the depression of the plate A, and is kept in place by thefriction against the ornamental inner surface of the flange of the plate A and against the studs G and the heads of the nails D. The filling may he further se= cured in place by upsetting the ends of the studs 0 by blows with a hammer.
- With this construction theheel-plates will be light, strong, and durable, and atthe same time ornamental, and not liable to cut and injure floors or carpets.
Having thuscdescribcd myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A metallic heel-plate having a circumferential flange with a smooth outer or Wearing sur face and adepressed middle part, provided with studs at a little distance from the flange and parallel therewith, the depressed portion being filled with leather or other suitable material, as set forth.
EDWARD CHESTER GARDNER.
