Description
$121!} 3, 1953 N LQUFT 2,55%3Q32 SIGN POST Filed March 28, 1949 INVENTOR. Naihan Zoufi Attorney Patented July 3, 1951 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to brackets and supports and more particularly a new and novel sign post.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a sign post adapted to be collapsed so it can be easily transported in an automobile or stored in a small space.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a sign post adapted to be extended to various heights.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a sign post adapted to be easily inserted in the ground.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a sign post on which a sign can be easily hung and removed therefrom.
Aside from the aforesaid objects, this invention resides in the particular combination of elements comprising the sign post.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim, and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application;
Fig. 1 is a side view of the sign post in collapsed condition.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the sign post in extended condition.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken approximately on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the upper and lower members of the sign post.
Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the slidable clamp and thumb-screw therefor.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the bracket.
Figs. 9 and 10 are perspective views of the foot piece and one of the hooks.
Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the sign post with the sign bracket and foot piece omitted.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a collapsible sign post consisting of upper and lower members 6 and 7 formed from elongated pieces of angle iron slidably connected together by a substantially rectangular clamp 8 having a thumbscrew 9 or the like threaded therein with its inner end adapted to engage the side A of the lower member and thereby secure it in rigid relation to the upper member.
Said upper and lower members are provided with opposed stop lugs I0 and H which are disposed on opposite sides of the aforesaid thumbscrew 9 so as to limit adjustment of the upper member relative to the lower member, it being apparent that the thumb-screw acts as an abutment for the lug I0 on the upper member when the clamp is disposed below its upper limit.
The aforesaid lug I0 is formed on one side of the upper member 6 and spaced from the other side thereof as indicated by the letter B in Figs. 4 and 11 so as to slidably receive the outer edge of side A of the lower member 7 and thereby assist in retaining said members together and from twisting relative to one another.
Secured to the upper member of the post, as by rivets l2 or the like, is a substantially triangular bracket I3 having its lower side l4 twisted, as indicated by the numeral l5, and provided with holes it to receive hooks I! or the like for removably attaching a sign I8, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereto.
The lower member has a sharp lower end [9 and is provided with a foot piece 29 to permit easy insertion of the post in the ground and also act as a handle to remove it therefrom.
With this invention fully set forth, it is manifest that a sign post which is light in weight is provided and, through the particular assemblage of elements forming the same, it can be easily collapsed or adjusted to desired heights without the use of tools.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A sign post comprising, an upper angle iron member including a sign supporting bracket, a stop lug formed on one side of the upper member and disposed in spaced relation to the other side thereof, a lower angle iron member including a foot piece, slidably resting against the inner surface of the upper member with the outer edge portion of one side thereof slidably disposed between the aforesaid lug and opposed side of the upper member, a stop lug formed on the upper end of the lower member in opposed relation to the first mentioned stop lug, a substantially rectangular clamp slidably surrounding the upper and lower angle iron members, and a thumb-screw threaded through the clamp with its inner end removably engaging one side of the upper member.
