CABINET HAVING A CLOSURE-CARRIED SHELF 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed June 24, 1947 if .3 56 p II I I r I Patented June 19, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT CABINET HAVING A CLOSURE-CARRIED SHELF Robert G. Ewell, Berkeley, Calif.
Application June 24, 1947, Serial No. 756,672
1 Claim. 1
I in the nature of a portable bar in the serving of drinks.
Further objects will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case closed for carrying;
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 on an enlarged scale;
Figure 3 is a transverse section onthe line 33 of Figure 1 also on an enlarged scale;
Figure 4 is a face view of the case opened for use; and
Figure 5 is a vertical section on the line 5--5 of Figure 4.
As shown, the device comprises a carrying case I comprising a body I l and a cover [2 liquid to the body on a line parallel with the long corners 4|, 42 of the closed case. The joints between the cover and the body at the ends of the case are upon diagonal lines as indicated at l3 on Figure 1, the upper end [4 of the body being slightly wider than the portion l of the cover. By this structure, the cover when erected to the position shown in Figures 4 and 5 will form an upper extension of the body, the edges [6 of the said closures of the cover being substantially an extension of the edge I! of the side closures of the body.
Within the body of the case, there are shown bottle separators l8, l9, and. dips 20, 2|, 20 and 2| to engage portions of bottles resting upon the bottom of the body of the case. There is shown a bracket 22 upon which may be supported drinking cups as 23. Desirably, a cocktail shaker may occupy the upwardly curved portion of the bracket 22 and the cups may be housed in the cocktail shaker for carriage. Clips 24, 25, 26, 21 and 28 are shown attached to the interior of the cover for support of ice cube tongs, vstirrers, and the like, a strainer 29 being shown in the clip 28 comprising a disc 30, cross-bar 3| and a handle 32. The cross-bar 3| may be placed upon the lip of a drinking cup, the disc 30 substantially filling the opening into the cup and the contents may be strained through openings 33 to prepare a beverage for consumption.
To provide a compartment in the cover and also a shelf for use in the serving of drinks, there is shown a shelf member comprising a plate 34 acting as a shelf body when the shelf is opened and a lip 35 providing a front ledge for the shelf. The shelf member is shown as hinged at 36 in the cover about which hinge the shelf may be swung to the position shown in Figure 2 to provide a closed compartment. Bracket members 31, 38, are shown as formed upon the end of the shelf member to retain the shelf member in horizontal position when opened to the position shown in Figure 5. A button 39 is shown in Figures 2, 4 and 5 which coacts with a recess 40 on the outside of the lip 35 to hold the shelf 34 in a closed position, thus forming a compartment for accessories.
The clip members 24 to 28 are desirably formed of thick felt or other materials having recesses cut therein into which the accessories may be pressed to retain them in position for carriage.
To cushion the bottles against shock a rubber mat 45 shown as corrugated, is shown in the bottom of the case.
It will be seen that when the device is closed, the shelf member 34 occupies space opposite the necks of the taller bottles and exterior of articles carried on the bracket 23. The less bulky accessories carried in the clips in the upper part of the cover stand opposite the bodies of the bottles by which arrangement there is very little waste space upon the interior of the device.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiments of the invention within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A portable bar comprising, in combination: a carrying case comprising a body and a cover forming a parallelopipedon when closed; said cover hinged to said body on a line between and parallel with adjacent long corners of the closed case; said cover tapering in depth from an edge wall at its hinged edge to a thin cover-edge, the end-edge walls of the cover being substantially triangular; said body varying in depth from a line adjacent a side edge wall to a remaining side edge wall of less width; the edge wall of the deeper edge of the cover hinged to the narrower edge wall of the body; and shelf means hinged to the edge wall of the wider edge of the cover to fold inwardly when the cover is closed and when extended forming a continuation outwardly of the inner surface of said cover edge wall and carrying an upstanding edge actthe cover.
