This invention relates to improvements in fence or splash back structure for cooking stoves and ranges.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide a cooking stove or range having a fence or splash back wall of substantial height which may be disassembled for minimizing the size of crating or packing containers.

Second, to provide a structure having these advantages in which the splash back wall comprises a relatively low base fence portion formed integrally with the top and a relatively high top fence portion or member which may be removed as a unit from the base fence portion but which when erected is very secure and rigid, and one in which the top portion may be quickly erected or disengaged without the aid of tools.

Third, to provide a structure having these advantages in. which the top fence portion constitutes a housing for control fixtures of the stove or lamps and the like.

Fourth, to provide a structure having these advantages which may be Very economically produced.

Further objects pertaining to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.

A structure which embodies the features of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective exploded view showing structural details and relative proportions of the base and top fence members and of the tongue and socket coupling members therefor.

Fig. 5 is a conventionalized end elevation of the stove with a crate indicated by dotted lines, the removable top fence member being shown as detached from the base member and arranged within a carton and the carton taped to the top of the stove.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated .comprises'za stove top I formed as a stamping J and having downturned end flanges The stove body 3 is provided with inturned top flanges 4 at its ends, the end flanges of the top having inturned portions 5 resting on the flange 4.

The top has a base fence or splash back memher 6 formed integrally therewith comprising a front wall 1 and end wall 8 continuous with the topand the end flanges thereof as shown in the drawing. The front and end walls of the base fence member are provided with inturned flanges v 9 andlll respectively. Corner plates H are arranged within the corners of the base fence member on the under side of the flanges 9 and I0 and welded thereto as indicated at I2.

The. top fence member comprises a front wall [3 and end. walls M formed integrally and complementary to the front. end walls of the base fence. member, that is, they are of such .dimensions at the bottom asto correspond to the top dimensions of the base fence member. These walls have inturned flanges l3! and MI at the bottom edges thereof. This top fence member is provided with a top I5 extended forwardly into a nose portion [6 which constitutes a housing for lamps as IT, the projecting portion l6 being provided with windows H3 in proper relation to the lamp. A thermostat control member I9 is mounted in the. front wall, the operating connections for which are not illustrated. These parts are illustrated to bring out the fact that the top fence member is adapted as a housing for fixtures.

The top and end walls of the top fence member have inturnediflanges 20 and 20', the, back wall 2! being detachably secured to the top fence member by means of screws as 22. The corner plates 23 are secured on the under sides of the front and end flanges of the top fence member at the corners thereof.

The stove is provided with a back wall 24 which is outwardly oifset at its upper edge as at 25 providing a recess 26 for the lower end of the back wall 21 which projects below the side walls of the top fence member. A beading or joint strip 21 desirably formed of plastic material is provided to close the joint between the base and top fence or splash back members, this strip being preferably of T section with the central arm disposed on the under side of the inturned flanges l3l and MI and secured thereto by screws 28. This strip not only covers the joint but is desirably contrastingly colored and serves as an ornamental beading.

The forming of the splash back or rear fence of the stove of sections is of great advantage in that it permits a relatively high fence or splash back in which the parts may be readily formed as stampings without excessive draw, and the parts may be enameled with a minimum of defective parts. The top splash back member is detachably mounted by means of the coacting socket and tongue members 29 and 30. The socket member-i29 tis formed :of agplate-like body portion having inturned edger-flanges 3| adapted to receive the plate-like tongue or dowel member 30. The socket member has an attaching flange 32 at its upper end..which..is..,secured on the under side of the corner plates- II. The tongue or dowel member 30 has an attaching flange 33 at its upper end whichiis securedtolthe under side of the corner-plates 23-:of'the top member. The socket members depend withinthe base fence member while ;-.the:..dowel .-or.. tongue members project from the bottom of the top fence member. The dowel member 30 is beveled at 34 to facilitate engagement with the socket. A stove or range including a top having downwardly projecting end flanges and an upwardly projecting fence base member formed integrally therewith, said base member comprising front and end walls continuous with the top and the end flanges thereof, the front and end walls of thebase member having inturned top flanges, corner plates disposed within the fence base member below said flanges thereof and fixedly secured thereto, sockets comprising plates having inturned edges adapted to receive'a platelike dowelrnember, said sockets having supporting flanges at their upper ends mounted on said corner plates with the sockets depending within the fence base member, a top fence member comprising 'front and end walls complementary to the frontand end walls of said base member and: having inturned flanges at their bottom edges, corner plates disposed below said flanges of said top fence member at the corners thereof and secured thereto, and plate-like socket engaging dowels secured to said corner plates of said top fence member and removably engageable with the sockets of said base fence member and acting to support the fence top member in erected position when engaged with said sockets.

A stove or range including a top having a relatively low upwardly projecting chambered fence base member formed integrally therewith and comprising enclosing walls including front and end walls having inturned top flanges, sockets vertically elongated and disposed within the chamber of said fence base member adjacent the ends thereof in supported depending relation to said top flanges, a relatively high top chambered fence member comprising enclosing walls including front and end walls complementary to the front and end walls of said base member and having inturned flanges at their bottom edges, socket engaging tongues vertically elongated and mounted on said top fence member flanges adjacent the ends thereof and projecting downwardlyitherefrom for vertically sliding engagement within said elongated sockets in the chamber of said fence base member and acting to support the top fence member in erected supported position on the base fence member and permitting removal of the top fence member as a unit and preventing forward tilting of the top fence member relative to the base fence member when the tongues are engaged in the slots, said top fence member being provided with a detachable back wall, the top fence member constituting a housing for stove fixture elements, a joint strip mounted on said top fence to telescopingly overlap the upper end of the fence base member thereby concealing the joint between the members when the top fence member is in erected position, and a stove back wall at the rear of the fence base member, adjacent edges of said back walls being in overlapping relation when the top fence member is-in erected position.

A stove or range including a top having a relatively low upwardly projecting chambered fence base member formed integrally therewith and comprising enclosing walls including front and end walls having inturned top flanges, sockets vertically elongated and disposed within the -'chamber of said fence base member adjacent the from for vertically sliding engagement within said elongated sockets in the chamber of said fence base member and acting to support the top fence member in erected supported position on the base fence member and permitting removal of the top fence member as a unit and preventing forward tilting of the top fence member relative to the base fence member when the tongues are engaged in the slots, and a joint strip mounted on said top fence to telescopically overlap the upper endof the fence base member thereby concealing the joint between the members when the top fence member is in erected position.

A stove or range including a top having a relatively low upwardly projecting chambered "fence base member formed integrally therewith and comprising enclosing walls including front and end walls, sockets mounted upon and housed within said frame base member adjacent the ends thereof, a relatively high top chambered fence member comprising front and end walls complementary to the front and end walls of said base member, socket engaging vertically elongated tongues on said top fence member disposed adjacent the ends thereof and projecting downwardly therefrom for vertically sliding engagement within said elongated sockets in the chamber of said fence base member and acting to support the top fence member in erected supported position on the base fence member and permitting removal of the top fence member as a unit, said top fence member being provided with a detachable back wall, the top fence member constituting a housing for stove fixture elements, and a stove back wall at the rear of the fence base member, adjacent edges of said back walls being in overlapping relation when the top fence member is in erected position.

A stove or range including a top having an upwardly projecting chambered fence base member formed integrally therewith and having upwardly projecting enclosing walls, a top chambered fence member having enclosing walls complementary to the walls of said fence base member, vertically elongated sockets mounted upon and housed within said fence base member to depend therein adjacent the ends thereof, vertically elongated tongues carried by and projecting from the bottom of saidtop fence member in inwardly spaced relation to the walls thereof and positioned for vertically. sliding engagement within said elongated sockets in the chamber of said fence base member when the top fence member is in erected position upon the fence base member, said top fence member being removable as a unit from said fence base member to facilitate crating of fence-members to telescopically overlap the other when the top fence member isinlerectedzl osition therebycoveringthe joints between the'members.
