FACTLY I LUG REMQVER FOR DUAL WHEEL ASSEMBLIES Filed-Sept. 9, 1948 v 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Henry V. Fact/y Patented Apr. 24, 1951 umrro res LUG REMOVER FOR DUAL WHEEL ASSEMBLIES 7 Henry V. Factly, Burlington, Ill. Application September 9, 1948, Serial No. 48,496
Thisinvention relates to. new and useful improvements in wrenches. and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a dual purpose stud lock and lug remover for dual wheel assemblies. such as those employed on light and heavy trucks, buses, prime movers and the like.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a dual. wheel wrench including inner and outer socketsv for respectively receiving the inner and outer nuts of a dual wheel assembly and embodying novel and improved means for holding the inner socket against rotation as the outer socket is rotated, whereby the outer wheel of a dual wheel assembly may be removed without disturbing the inner wheel thereof.
A further object. of the present invention is to provide a dual purpose stud lock and lug remover that is small and compact in structure and which is quickly and readily applied to. or removed from a dual wheel assembly in a convenient manner.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a Wrench of the aforementioned charenter that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, eflicient and durable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, rela tively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a dual wheel assembly and showing the present invention applied thereto;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 4;
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the locking plate used in conjunction with the present invention. 7
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral It! represents the present 3 Claims. (Cl. 81-56) invention generally, including a pair of inner and outer anchor members or U-shaped plateslZ and I4 which are detachably connected to each other through the medium of any suitable number of bolts and nuts l6.
Adjacent the end portions of the inner plate l2, there are provided annular openings l8 that receive a pair of alternate inner and outer nuts designated generally by the numerals and 22 of a dual wheel assembly 24.
The central portion of the outer plate I4 is provided with an aperture 26 that receives the reduced, multi-sided outer end portion 28 of an inner socket or cylindrical member 30 having a multi-sided recess 32 for receiving the inner nut or stud 34 of the wheel assembly 24.
An outer socket or sleeve 36 embraces the member 30, is rotatable thereon and in an opening 38 provided in the central portion of the inner plate l2. The inner end of the outer socket 36 projects outwardly from the inner end of the inner socket 3i] and is formed with a multi-sided recess 40 for receiving an outer nut or lug 42 of the wheel assembly 24.
The outer periphery of the outer socket 36 is integrally formed with an annular drive gear 44 that is intermeshed with an annular drive gear 46 integrally formed with the outer periphery of a shaft 43 that is journaled for rotation between the plates l2 and I4. One end 50 of the shaft 48 projects outwardly from the outer plate l4 and is provided with a multi-sided end portion 52 for receiving a lug wrench or suitable tool whereby the shaft 48 will be rotated.
In order to hold the inner socket against rotation, as the outer socket is rotated, there is provided a locking plate 54 having a multi-sided opening 56 that receives the reduced outer end 23 of the inner socket. The locking plate 54 is also provided with an arcuate slot 58 that receives a bolt cc adjustably carried by the outer plate [4. v
In practical use of the present invention, the same is applied to the wheel assembly 24 as shown in Figure 2 with an alternate pair of inner and outer nuts 2c and 22 positioned in the openings i8, and the inner and outer nuts 34 and 42 between the pair of inner and outer nuts 20 and 22 received in the recesses 32 and 40 respectively.
As the shaft 48 is rotated, the outer socket will likewise be rotated and the outer nut 42 will be removed without removing or turning the inner nut 34.
Obviously, the above procedure is continued until all of the outer nuts 42 have been removed. l
It is preferred that the ratio of the gear teeth =44 to the gear teeth 46 be three to one, however, :any suitable ratio could be employed without deviating from the scope of the present invention.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this :art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and by the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A dual wheel lug Wrench comprising an anchor member mountable on a wheel assembly and including inner and outer parallel plates and connecting means between the'plates, an outer sleeve rotatably supported on the inner plate and having a socketed end projecting beyond the inner plate to receive the outer nut of a dual wheel assembly, an inner sleeve rotatable within said outer sleeve and including a multi-sided end portion projecting through said ou er plate, a locking plate having a multi-sided opening therein receiving the multi-sided end portion of said inner sleeve to hold the inner sleeve against rotation, means adjustably securing said locking plate to said outer plate, a shaft rotatably supported by said plates and paralleling said sleeves, a driven ear fixed about said outer sleeve, and a drive gear forming part of said shaft and meshing with said driven gear.
2. A dual wheel lug wrench comprising an anchor member mountable on a wheel assembly and including inner and outer parallel plates and connecting means between the plates, an outer sleeve rotatably supported on the inner plate and having a socketed end projecting beyond the inner plate to receive the outer nut of a dual wheel invention, what is assembly, an inner sleeve rotatable within said outer sleeve and including a multi-sided end portion projecting through said outer plate, a locking plate having a multi-sided opening therein receiving the multi-sided end portion of said inner sleeve to hold the inner sleeve against rotation, said locking plate having an arcuate slot therein, a bolt threaded to the outer plate and extending through said arcuate slot, a shaft rotatably supported on said plates, a driven gear on said outer sleeve, and a drive gear on said shaft meshing with said driven gear.
3. A dual wheel lug wrench comprising inner and outer spaced parallel plates, means adjustably connecting the plates to permit the plates to be spaced apart a predetermined distance, an outer sleeve slidably and rotatably supported by said inner plate and having a socket at one end for receiving the outer nut of a dual wheel assembly, an inner sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted in said outer sleeve and having a socket at one end for receiving the inner nut of a dual wheel assembly, said inner sleeve including a multi-sided end portion projecting through said outer plate, said outer plate having an aperture slidably and rotatably receiving said multi-sided end portion, means adjustably secured to said outer plate and engaging said multi-sided end portion to hold the inner sleeve against rotation, a shaft slidably and rotatably supported by said plates and paralleling said sleeves, a driven gear about said outer sleeve, and a drive gear about said shaft meshing with said driven gear.
