Rubber rollers are already known for massaging purposes in which, in order to increase the massaging elfect, a series of suction cavities are formed in the roller with the lips extending from the surface. The massaging effect is partly obtained due to a slight vacuum being caused in the cup when its iip is pressed against the part being massaged so that as the cup is withdrawn, it gives a slight suction to this part The suction cavities ar usually of cup-like form.

The present invention aims at providing an improved form of suction cavity roller which while maintaining the ease of use of the known forms of rollers will yet give an improved massagingeffect.

A'roller according to the present invention is characterized in that each of the suction cavities is long and narrow, is framed with a deep, proiecting lip on the surface of the roller, and extends lengthwise along the roller, for the greater part of the length thereof, the cavities being arranged at small intervals around the roller surface parallel with the axis.

It is also preferred to provide the roller surface with longitudinal ribs between the cavities projecting from the face of the roller to approximately the same extent as the lips framing the cavities.

In use the roller is rolled on the part to be massaged, say a persons neck, and as each projecting lip frame comes in contact with the skin it is compressed and flattened and pressed into close contact with the skin and a it comes away again it will tend to draw the skin with it by a slight suction until it leaves the skin and the projection and adjacent part of the roller assumes its original shape again.

The appended drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of construction.

The handle A and bearing fork B which mount the roller may take any convenient form. D is a spindle on which the rubber roller 0 turns and E are knurled nuts screwed on to the ends of the spindle D, which nuts are preferably deep enough to enclose and guard the spindle ends.

In the body of the rolle is a regular series of long, narrow cavities G arranged at small intervals around the roller surface. Each cavity is arranged lengthwise of the roller extends for the greater part of the length thereof.

The opening H of each cavity at the surface of the roller is framed by a deep, projecting lip F.

In between the cavities I prefer to provide 1ongitudinal ribs J extending along the surface I of the roller and projecting approximately as far as do the framing lips F.

This illustrated embodiment is especially suitable for massaging and reducing, or removing creases from a persons neck. The framing lips F project about one eighth to one tfifth of an inch from the surface I of the roller, and the depth of each cavity G from the said surface is in this example a quarter of an inch.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is: c A massage roller comprising a handle terminating at one end in a pair of spaced-apartbearing forks, a spindle journalled in said bearing forks; a cylindrical roller mounted on said spindle; a plurality of long narrow suction cavities spaced uniformly in the periphery of the roller parallel with the longitudinal axis and extending for the greater part of the length of the roller, each of said cavities being completely framed with a deep projecting lip on the periphery of the roller, and a longitudinal rib formed on the periphery of the roller between each pair of lips, said ribs extending in length substantially from end to end of the roller and being of the same height as the framing lips.
