Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH PIGKERING, OF LEON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. A.
- BAY, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,237, dated February 28, 1882,
Application filed Ju1y19,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEREMIAH PIoKERING,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Leon, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Door-Cheeks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a ful clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to [O which itappertains to make and use the same,
reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
1 This invention relates to improvements in door-checks; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of my combined door-check, bumper, and
latch. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the adjustable latch-platein section. Fig. 3 isa similar view of the same, showing thelatoh engagedwith the latch-plate. Fig. 4 is a front view of 2 the adjustable latch plate; .and Fig. 5 is a general view, showing the relative positions of parts.
Like letters indicate like parts. A is a stud or pin, composed otany suitable o material, and provided at orieend with a plate or flange, at, having apertures for the passage of screws a a, by which it is attached to the base-board of a wall. At its opposite end the stud carries an elastic bumper, B, and at its 5 top it is provided with a lug, b, to which is pivoted a latch, O. This latch is provided at one end with a knob, 0, while its other end is provided with a shouldered projection, e, the face of which is beveled, as shown, forming a catch for engagement with the latch-plate D, which 40 is attached to the door.
The latch-plate D has a recess, f, for the reception of the catch 6, the edge of the recess being slightly beveled or inclined, so that the parts will readily engage when brought in con- 5 tact. The plate D also has a slot, g, for the passage of the attaching-screw h, and is thus arranged on the door, so that it may be adjusted to any desired point in order to bring its lower surface in line with the upper sur- 5:) face of the stud A, when the parts engage without difficulty. When the door is thrown back against the stud A the catch a on the latch O, engaging with the recess f in the latch-plate D, holds the door open until it is released by pressure with the foot upon the knob c.
The bumper B obviates shock or injury to the door when the parts come together.
The device is simple, durable, and efficient, and may be easily and cheaply applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a combined door-check and bumper, the stud A, having elastic bumper B, and latch 0, provided with knob cand catch 6, in combination with the adjustable latch-plate D, having recessf, slot g, and adjusting screw h, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH PIOKERING.
