This invention relates to an adjustable seat section for chairs whereby a portion of the seat of any chair structure can be raised above the normal level of the seat or lowered below that level for the purpose of transferring the weight borne by a portion of the body while sitting to another portion of the body, thereby making the chair or seat more comfortable due to the aforesaid adjustment.

An object of my invention is to provide an adjustable seat section of any desired shape or size, which can be raised or lowered, thereby transferring the weight carried by one part of the sitting person to another part of the body.

A feature of my invention resides in the manual vertical adjustment of a section of the seat, this manual adjustment being of any desired or practical type.

Another object of my invention is to change the sitting position in a chair, or the like, by raising or lowering a section of the seat of the chair, the movement of the seat section being substantially vertical. It is obvious that the movable seat section may be incorporated in any type of chair or seatthat is, the chair structure may be plain or upholstered, or the like.

Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.

In the drawing Figure 1 .is a transverse sectional view of a chair embodying my invention.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a chair or seat which may be either the plain or upholstered type. The

chair includes the usual seat 2, all of which is usual and well-known in the art. A section 3 of the seat 2, which may be of any desired shape but which is smaller than the area of the seat 2, is fitted in a similarly shaped opening 4 in the seat. The seat section 3 may be raised or lowered so as to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. the seat 2 and extends over the section 3 so that there is no abrupt ridge when the seat section is in either raised or lowered position. The cover 5 is formed of a suitable fabric, which is somewhat elastic and will tend to return to its original shape. The cover is attached at its periphery to the seat 2 by suitable means, but the cover is not secured to the section 3.

The seat section 3 may be moved vertically by any suitable means, for example, it might A pad or cover 5 is provided on be a threaded post which depends from the seat section. A nut l is threaded onto the post 6, and this nut is rotated through the gearing 8 on the end of the crank shaft 9. The shaft 9 may be manually rotated through the crank l0, thus rotating the nut l and either raising or lowering the section 3. A suitable bracket or housing H carries the post 6 and the mechanism to raise or lower this post, such as the shaft 9.

Fatigue due to sitting is caused by the concentration of the weight of the body on one part thereof. If the weight can be shifted to another part of the body, the tension and fatigue is relieved. I accomplish this by adjusting the seat section 3 to a level either above or below the top of the seat 2. A relatively small adjustment is sufficient to transfer the weight of the body from one portion to another.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. In a chair or the like including a seat, an adjustable section fitted into said seat, the area of said section being smaller than the area of the seat, a cover extending over the seat and the section said cover being yieldable and secured to the seat at the outer edge thereof, and means to adjust said section relative to the seat, said adjustment being substantially in a vertical plane whereby the section may be moved either above or below the level of the seat.

In a chair or the like including a seat, an adjustable section fitted into said seat, the area of said section being smaller than the area of the seat, a cover extending over the seat and the section said cover being yieldable and secured to the seat at the outer edge thereof, and manual means to adjust said section relative to the seat, said adjustment being substantially in a vertical plane whereby the section may be moved either above or below the level of the seat.
