9 Claims. (Cl. 16-111) The invention relates to handles to be applied to boxes of various kinds and sizes. It may be particularly adapted for use with paper or cardboard or fibre boxes which are provided with slots or apertures through which part of the handle may roject to engage the box. If desired, the slots may be in two overlapping parts so as to register when the box is closed, whereby the handle in the slots may also act as a locking device, holding the box closed.

The handle may be cut or formed from a single piece of material, which may be scored or other wise marked to aid in folding to put the handle in final form for use. It may consist of a top bar or member to lie in the hand when in use, associated with which are side members having projecting legs carrying tongues extending through the slots in the box and held therein by wings on the tongues, In order to give greater strength to the handle and prevent it from collapsing, folding portions may be provided adjacent the top bar adapted to keep parts of the handle apart sufliciently to provide a gripping member of a suitable size to rest conveniently in the hand.

The material of which the device is made may vary and its size and shape may also vary, as may its proportions and relative strength or bulk, compared to the box with which it is to be used. Without limiting the invention, but in order to explain it more fully, there is presented one embodiment of it in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a formed blank from which the handle may be made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank partially folded. Fig, 3 isa perspective view of the handle fully formed and ready to be inserted in the slots of the box. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one form of box to which the handle may be applied. Fig.

, 5 is a perspective view of a box showing the handle applied to it; and Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of Fig. 5 on the line B-5.

The blank consists of a central member or bar III acting'as a connecting member for the two side members or bars I I and I2, which are articulated to the member I 0. The fold lines on which the various parts are articulated are indicated in dot and dash. Projecting from the ends of the bar II are legs I3 and I l and projecting from the bar I2 are legs I5 and I5, Articulated to the bar II and on the side opposite the member HI and between the legs I3. I4 is a member l1 which, when' folded on line 20 as shown in Fig. 6, acts as a spacing member holding apart the bars II and I2 when they are folded on lines 2 I, 22. The

member I1 is narrower than the member III so that as folded, the legs I4 and I6 and the legs I3 and I5 incline and approach each other at their extremities as shown in Figs, 3, 5 and 6. Articulated to the member I1 at the fold line 23 is a reinforcing member 24 which, as shown in Fig. 6, lies against the bar I2 and is held in place by a tab 25 on 24 which engages in the slot 26 in the top member I ll. 7

The handle may be prepared for use by folding first 24 and I1 as shown in Fig. 2. Member II may then be folded to bring the tab 25 into the slot 26 and the bar I2 may be folded against 24, which will act as a reinforcement of the portion of the handle to be gripped, This folding will bring the ends of legs I3, I5 and I l, I6, respectively, into more or less close proximity or contact, as indicated in Fig. 3. At the ends of each of the legs I3, I4, I5 and I6 are tongues 21, 28, 29 and 30, respectively. Each tongue 21 to 30 carries articulated to it a wing 3|, 32, 33 and 34, respectively. It will be noted that all wings may be folded outwardly as shown in Fig. 3.

A box of any desirable form may be used with the handle and may be provided with slots through one or more thicknesses of the box material. The slots may be suitably placed and spaced to receive the handle legs. In Fig. 4 is shown a box made up of two members 35 and 36 telescoping at one side so that when closed one side underlies the other. The section 35 is provided with slots 31, 38 adapted to register with slots 39, 40 in section 36, The formed handle may be applied to the box by inserting the tongues 21, 29 through registering slots 31, 39 and the tongues 28, 30 through slots 38, All. As the tongues pass through the slots, the folded wings 3I, 32, 33, 34 tend to expand within the box by the natural or inherent elasticity of the material, as shown in Fig. 6, and allow the box to be lifted by the handle which is prevented from being withdrawn through the slots by the wings.

Slots II, 42, 43 and 44, respectively, on the legs I3, I4, I5 and I6 are provided adjacent the tongues at their ends and act as stops for insertion of the legs and position the box wall between the stops and the wings.

There is thus provided a firmly and definitely fixed sturdy handle for use with boxes of various types.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a handle for a box having slots, two bars, legs extending from the ends of the bars, an intermediate member provided with a slot articulated to and connecting the bars, a spacing memher articulated to one bar between its legs and extending to the other bar, a reinforcing member articulated to the spacing member and lying in contact with the last mentioned bar, a tab on the reinforcing member engaging the slot in the intermediate member, tongues at the ends of the legs extendin through the boxslots, Wings artic: ulated to the tongues. and within the box, and stops on the legs positioning the box between the stops and the wings.

2. In a handle for a box having slots, two bars, legs extending from the ends of-thebars; an-ir termediate member articulated to andconneoteing the bars, a spacing member articulatedto. one bar between its legs and extending, to the other bar, a reinforcing member articulated to the spacing member and lying-in contaohwith; the last mentioned bar, tongues at the endspf the legs extending through the box slots, wings articulated to the tongues and within the box, and stops on the legs positioning-the box between the stops and the wings.

3. In a handle for abox having slots; two-bars-, legs extending from the ends ofthe-bars, an-intermediate member articulated to and connecting the bars, aspacing member articulated: to one bar between its legsand extending-to the other bar, tongues at the ends of the legs-extending through the bar slots, wings articulated to the tongues and within the box, and'stops on the legs positioning the box between the stopsand thewings.

4. In a handle for-a box having slots, two bars, legs extending from the ends of the bars, an intermediate member provided with a slot articulated to and connecting the bars, a spacing member articulated to one bar between its legs and extending to the other bar, a reinforcing member artieulated to the spacing member-and lying in contact with the last mentioned bar, a-tab on the reinforcingmember engaging the slot in the intermediate member, tongues at the ends of the legs extending through the box slots; and wings articulated to the tongues and within the box.

5. In ahandle for a box having slots, two bars, legs extending from the ends of the bars, an intermediate member articulated to and connecting the bars, a spacing member articulated to one bar between its legs and extending 'to theother bar, a reinforcing member articulated to the spacing member and'lying in contact with the last mentioned bar, tongues at the endsof the legs extending through the box slots, and Wings articulated to the tongues and within the box.

6. In a handle for a box havingslots, two bars, legs extending from the ends of the bars, an intermediate member articulated-to and connecting the bars, a spacing member articulated to one bar between its legs and extending to the other bar, tongues at the ends of the legs extending through the box slots, and wings articulated to the tongues and within the box.

7. 9. In a handle for a box provided with spaced slots, a first bar having a slot in-it, asecond bar articulated at one edge of the first mentioned bar, legs at the ends of the second bar projecting away from the articulated edge, a third bar articulated to the second bar between the legs and of less width than the first bar and lying substantially parallel to the first bar, a fourth bar, a tab on the fourth bar engaging the slot in the first bar, a fifth bar articulated to the edge of the first bar opposite the second bar and lying in contact with the fourth bar, legs at the ends of the fifth barprojecting away. from the articulated edge and having their ends substantially in contact with the ends of the legs of 'the second bar, all of the legs having slots engaging the box adjacent the box slots, tongues at the ends of all the legs extending through the box slots, and Wings articulated to all the leg tongues arranged and constructed to lie-against the'tongues while passingthrough the box slots andto expand and engage the inner face of the box.
