G. V. JAKEWAY Dec. 30, 1947.
DOOR HANDLE Filed Nov. 29, 1945 INVENTOR Gera/: V.' Jaea/d BY @Wgff Patented Dec. 30,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOOR HANDLE Gerald V. J akeway, Grand Rapids, Mich., assig'nor to Keeler Brass Company, Grand Rapids, Mich., a corporation of- Michigan Application November 29, 1945, Serial No. 631,616
14 Claims. l
This invention relates to improvements in door handles.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved door handle of the trigger type which may be readily mounted substantially. as a unit to automobile doors, refrigerator doors, and the like, the movable parts being mainly concealed.
Second, to provide a door handle in which the bolt is released and the door opened by a continued outward pull.
Third, to provide a door handle having these advantages which is attractive in appearance and the moving parts are Well protected.
Fourth, to provide a handle structure which makes Aescutcheon plates unnecessary but which may be used with escutcheon plates if so desired for ornamental purposes or closure purposes.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is deiined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a. fragmentary view partially in longitudinal section of a handle embodying my invention in operative relation to a door.
Fig, 2 is an enlarged transverse section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1. l
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, I represents a chambered door having an outer panel 2. 3 represents a part of the door casing or frame.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, the reinforcing plate 4 issecured on the inner side of the outer panel 2, this supporting plate being provided with a laterally disposed arm 5 at its outer end.
My improved handle comprises an outwardly bowed handle grip 6 suitably conformed, the grip illustrated comprising an inner supporting body 1 with an ornamental or finishing shell 8 secured thereto. The grip 6 constitutes a pull handle. The grip has a longitudinal slot 9 in its inner side adapted to receive the latch releasing lever I6 In the embodiment illustrated, the bifurcated bracket II is disposed within the base portion of the grip 6 and secured to the body member of the grip by spot welding as indicated at I2, the bracket projecting from the grip and being disposed through registering openings I3 and I4 provided therefor in the .plate 4 and the outer panel 2.
The bracket is provided with a cross or bridge piece I5 which is embossed at I6 and threaded to receive the screw I1 arranged through the arm 5 for attaching the base end of the grip to the supporting plate and thus to the door. The edge I8 of the door is provided with an opening I9 through which the screw I1 may be manipulated. When the door is closed, this opening is covered by the door frame.
The door frame is provided with a. keeper 26 for the bolt 2| which is pivoted at 22 on the bolt lever 23'w'hich is in turn pivoted at 24 on the bracket. The bolt is slidably supported by the opposed lugs or projections 25'on the bracket and reeiprocates' in a hole 26 in the edge of the door.
The release lever I0 is pivoted at 21 within the grip, the pivots being carried by the sides of the bracket.
The outer end of the grip is provided with an attaching bolt 28 which is disposed through the outer panel and supporting plate and secured by means of the nut 29. The grip is thus rigidly secured to the door. The bolt release lever is arranged to be simultaneously `grasped with the grip so that an outward pull on the handle and release lever collapses the release lever into the slot in the handle and actuates the trigger 30 which is pivoted at 3| to the bracket and connected by the link 32 to the release lever, the link being pivoted at 33 to the release levery and at 34 to the trigger. The trigger engages the bolt lever 23.
The spring 35 has a coil 36 engaging the trigger pivot 3|, the coil being provided with an arm at each end, the arm 31 engaging the trigger and the arm 38 the lever pivot 21. This results in biasing the release lever and the trigger to their retracted or initial positions and when the lever I0 is actuated by a pull thereon the trigger is actuated to retract the bolt.
The bolt lever 23 is provided with an actuating spring not illustrated.
I have illustrated'and described a very practical commercial embodiment of my invention. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is:
