INVENTORS ANTHONY J. MATTIAS HAROLD J. FISH BYW W ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 4, 1947 DRILLING JIG Anthony J. Mattias, Crompton, and Harold J.
- Fish, Nooseneck Hill, R. 1.
Application November 14, 1945, Serial No. 628,634
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 3'70 0. G. 757) Claims.
This invention relates to a device for use in drilling holes through sheet material and is illustrated herein as embodied in a device for aligning rivet holes.
Where two or more sheets of material must be riveted together, rivet holes drilled in the sheets must be carefully and properly aligned for proper riveting. Where one of the sheets is provided with a hole or series of holes already drilled, it is diiTicult to drill holes in another sheet which are correctly aligned with those already drilled, particularly if the sheet having holes already drilled in it is positioned underneath the second sheet.
Therefore, it is an object of this invention to provide a device suitable for locating and drilling holes in one sheet of material in alignment with holes already drilled in another sheet.
Accordingly, this invention provides an aligning device which includes a pair of substantially parallel arms, one end of each arm being attached to an end of the other arm. A pin is mounted at the free end of one arm and a guide at the free end of the second arm in spaced coaxial relation with the pin. When the pin is inserted in an opening already drilled in one sheet of material, the guide is automatically positioned to guide a drill for properly drilling an opening in the other sheet in alignment with the hole already present in the first sheet.
With the above and other objects and features in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention and will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an aligning device constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the device illustrated in Fig. 1, the section being taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, two sheets of material being shown in place ready for drilling.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the device includes a block In to which two substantially parallel arms [2 and M are attached by a series of rivets it. The arm l2 may be made of rigid material but the arm I4 is constructed of resilient material to permit it to be bent toward or away from the arm l2. A pin I8 is firmly attached to the free end of the arm I at a right angle thereto. To the free end of the arm I2 is attached a guide or drill jig 20 having an opening 2| mounted coaxially with the pin l8 and constructed to receive a drill 22.
Two sheets of material 24 and 26 are shown, the sheet 24 having a hole 28 into which the pin I 8 fits. The sheets are held firmly in their relative position by fastening means not shown. When the aligning device is to be used, the pin I8 is inserted in the hole 28. Then, since the opening 2i in the jig 20 is mounted coaxially with the pin 18, it automatically is set in position for drilling an opening in the sheet 26 in alignment with the opening already present in the sheet 24. The opening 2| may be used to guide a drill during drilling, or it may be used simply as a guide for marking the sheet 26 at the proper place for drilling, and the device may be removed during the drilling operation.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for government purposes without the payment of any royalty thereon or therefor.
Having described the invention what is claimed as novel and desired to be protected by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An aligning device comprising a pair of substantially parallel arms one end of each arm being attached to an end of the other arm, a pin mounted at the free end of one arm and a guide mounted at the free end of the second arm having an opening in spaced coaxial relation with said pin, said pin and said guide being directed inwardly toward each other.
2. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein one of said arms is constructed of resilient material.
3. An aligning device comprising first and second spaced substantially parallel arms joined at one end thereof, a pin mounted at the free end of the first of said arms and inwardly directed toward the free end of the second of said arms, a guide mounted on the free end of the second of said arms and inwardly directed toward said pin, said guide having an opening therein coaxial with said pin, whereby said free ends are adapted to embrace a plurality of work members between said pin and said guide.
4. In a device in accordance with claim 3, wherei in at least one of said arms is constructed of resilient material adapted to permit engagement of said pin and said guide.
5. An aligning device comprising a substantially U-shaped structure resilient at least in part, a guide and a pin mounted on the opposed free ends of said structure and inwardly directed toward each other, said guide being formed with an opening substantially in coaxial relation with said pin, said U-shaped structure being adapted to embrace members of variable thickness between said guide and said pin.
