This invention relates to septic tanks and is directed to improvements in septic tanks formed from pre-cast components.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a septic tank construction wherein a tank having single or plural compartments may be formed by cooperating precast sections.
Various novel objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter observed in connection with the accompanying description of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figs. 1 to 41: inclusive are perspective views of the bottom, side, end and partition wall members forming a part of the invention;
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views showing end and center upper wall or cover members;
Figs. '7 and 8 are plan and side elevational views respectively showing a single compartment tank of the invention; and
Figs. 9 and 10 are plan and side elevational views respectively showing a double compartment tank of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The various components to be described are preferably cast from concrete or a cement mix-- ture in suitable molding equipment and the components may be reinforced with. metal if desired.
A bottom wall 2 is shown in Fig. 1 which has longitudinal and transverse wall receiving grooves st and 6 on the outer sides of which there are beads 8 and If].
A side wall I2 is shown in Fig. 2 which may be called a rear wall. On the upper edge of the wall there are notches Id and a projection I6. A groove it extends downwardly from-the upper edge thereof for receiving an edge of a bafiie H and a groove 26 extends upwardly from the lower edge for receiving oneend of a cross plate 21.
As stated, the wall l2 shown is a rear wall and a front wall I4 similar thereto is provided which has grooves corresponding to the grooves l8 and 29 for receiving an edge of a baffle 59. The front and rear walls constitute a pair of right and left hand walls. a
An end wall 3% is shown in Fig. 3 which has side grooves 32 for receiving the end edges of the front and rear walls l2 and M. A groove 34 extends downwardly from the upper edge for receiving a vertical edge of baffle I l. The end wal 3d and 36 have their lower edges in theglfooves B'Ofthe bottom wall 2 and the vertical'edges of the side walls are disposed in the vertica grooves such as 32 of the end walls. An end cover plate 40 shown in Fig. 5, has
grooves (5 and 4.5 for receiving the upper edges of an end wall and the upper edges of the side walls. There are two such end cover plates, one for each end'of the tank and when in place on the side and end walls said walls are held thereby in the desired relative position. v
' The grooves are made large enough to loosely receivethe edge portions of their respective components when the walls are assembled as described the joints may he pointed up inside and outside the compartment in the usual manner.
The member 411 may have ribs such as d6 which are adapted to reinforce the said member. Porticnsli3 are receivable in the notches M.
The end wall 30 has an opening behind baffle ll and the opposite end wall 36 has an opening 52 similar thereto. The opening 52 may function as the inlet and sewage entering therethrough flows downwardly at the rear of baffle 19 up and over cross plate 2| and upwardly be hind bafile to opening 50.
Sludge strikes against cross plate 2! and as solid particles are liquified sludge or unliquified material rises or at least remains in the compartment while water flows out outlet B ll. The
arrangement of the baffles and cross plate prevents" solids and sludge from passin out of the tank and to accomplish this the cross plate may be located at any point longitudinally of the compartment.

9 and 10.
The bottom, side, intermediate and. end walls are assembled together with the cross plates and baiiies and pointed up as previously described and the cover members are put in place so as to provide a doubl compartment tank.
The sewage enters the left hand end as in the case of Figs. 7 and 8, and flows over cross plate 2| through wall member 10 over the other cross plate and up through the passageway formed by bailie l5) and out the outlet 50.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather'than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency .of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A septic tank comprising in combination, a bottom wall provided with longitudinal and transverse grooves adjacent opposite and adjacent edges thereof, end and side walls having lower edges disposed in said grooves and extending upwardiy from said bottom wall, said end walls having vertically extending grooves in which the end edges of the side walls are disposed,
baffies extending downwardly from upper edges of adjacent sideand end walls disposed diagonally relative to said adjacent side and end walls to form therewith vertically disposed passageways terminating upwardly from said bottom wall, said end walls provided with openings leading into said passageways, said side walls provided on the upper edges thereof with upwardly extending central projections intermediate the ends thereof and notches at the opposite ends of the projections, end cover members having grooves in the lower faces thereof receiving the upper edges of said end walls and adjacent upper edges of said side walls and provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves disposed in said notches, and a central cover member having grooves in the lower face thereof in which the projections of the side wall are receivable and provided with ribs adjacent the ribs of the end cover members, said cover members closing the tank and overlying the upper ends of said passageways.
2. Aseptic tank comprising in combination, a pair of horizontally disposed adjacent bottom. walls each, having longitudinal and transverse groovesv adjacent opposite and adjacent edges thereof, a central vertically disposed intermediate Wall above the jointure of said bottom walls exthe upper edges thereof and notches at opposite ends of said projections, end cover members having grooves in the lower faces thereof in which the upper edges of the end walls and adjacent portions of the side walls are receivable and provided with portions at the ends of certain of the grooves receivable in the notches of the side walls adjacent said end walls, other cover members having grooves receiving the upper edges of adjacent side walls provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves disposed in the groove on the upper side of the central intermediate wall and in the notches of the side walls, and central cover members having grooves on the lower faces thereof at their opposite ends in which the projections of the side wall are disposed, said end and intermediate walls provided with openings therethrough for the passageway of liquid into and out of said tank.
3. A septic tank comprising in combination, a
' pair of horizontally disposed adjacent bottom walls each having longitudinal and transverse grooves adjacent opposite and adjacent edges thereof, a central vertically disposed intermediate wall above the jointure of said bottom walls extending vertically upwardly therefrom having portions disposed in the adjacent transverse grooves of said bottom walls and provided with a transverse groove on the upper edge thereof and vertical grooves on its opposite faces adja cent opposite vertical sides thereof, end walls having lower edges in the outermost transverse groovesof the, bottom walls and provided with grooves adjacent vertical edges thereof, side walls having lower edges in the longitudinal grooves of the bottom walls and opposite end edges in the grooves of the end walls and intermediate wall, said side walls having upwardly extending projections on the upper edges thereof and notches at opposite ends of said projections, end cover members having grooves in the lower faces thereof in which the upper edges of the end walls and adjacent portions of the side walls are receivable and provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves in the notches of the side walls adjacent said end walls, other cover members having grooves receiving theupper edges of adjacent side walls and provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves in the groove on the'upper side of the central wall and in the notches of the side wall, central cover members having grooves on the lower faces thereof in which the projections of the side wall are disposed, and baflles at opposite ends of the tank disposed diagonally relative to adjacent portions of said side and end walls and extending downwardly from upper edges of said side and end walls to form with said side and end walls disposed vided with an opening therethrough adjacent said bottom walls.
4. A septic tank comprising in combination, a pair of horizontally disposed adjacent bottom walls each having longitudinal and transverse grooves adjacent opposite and adjacent edges thereof, a central vertically disposed intermediate wall above the jointure of said bottom walls extending vertically upwardly therefrom having portions disposed in the adjacent transverse grooves of said bottom walls and provided with a transverse groove on the upper edge thereof and vertical grooves on its opposite faces adjacent opposite vertical sides thereof, end walls having lower edges in the outermost transverse grooves of the bottom walls and provided with grooves adjacent vertical edges thereof, side walls having lower edges in the longitudinal grooves of the bottom walls and opposite end edges in the grooves of the end walls and intermediate wall, said side walls having upwardly extending projections on the upper edges thereof and notches at opposite ends of said projections, end cover members having grooves in the lower faces thereof in which the upper edges of the end walls and adjacent portions of the side walls are receivable and provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves receivable in the notches of the side walls adjacent said end walls, other cover members having grooves receiving the upper edges of adjacent side walls and provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves receivable in the groove on the upper side of the central wall and in the notches of the side walls, central cover members having grooves on the lower faces thereof at their opposite ends in which the projections of the side walls are disposed, baiiles at opposite ends of the tank disposed diagonally relative to adjacent portions of said side and end walls and extending downwardly from upper edges of said side and end walls to form with said side and end walls vertical passageways terminating upwardly from said bottom walls, said end walls adjacent upper edges thereof provided with openings leading into said passageways, and said intermediate wall provided with an opening therethrough adjacent said bottom walls, and cross plates extending upwardly from said bottom walls and between said side walls intermediate said end and intermediate walls terminating upwardly from said bottom Walls.
5. A septic tank comprising in combination, a
pair of horizontally disposed adjacent bottom walls each having longitudinal and transverse grooves adjacent opposite and adjacent edges thereof, a central vertically disposed intermediate wall above the jointure of said bottom walls extending vertically upwardly therefrom having portions disposed in the adjacent transverse grooves of said bottom walls and provided with a transverse groove on the upper edge thereof and vertical grooves on its opposite faces adjacent opposite vertical sides thereof, end walls having lower edges in the outermost transverse grooves of the bottom walls and provided with grooves adjacent vertical edges thereof, side walls having lower edges in the longitudinal grooves of the bottom walls and opposite end edges in the grooves of the end walls and intermediate wall, said side walls having upwardly extending projections on the upper edges thereof and notches at opposite ends of said projections, end cover members hav-- ing grooves in the lower faces thereof in which the upper edges of the end walls and adjacent portions of the side walls are receivable and pro vided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves disposed in the notches of the side walls adjacent said end walls, other cover mem-- bers having grooves receiving the upper edges of adjacent side walls and provided with portions at the ends of certain of said grooves disposed in the groove on the upper side of the central wall and in the notches of the side walls, central cover members having grooves on the lower faces thereof in which the projections of the side walls are disposed, baflles at opposite ends of the tank disposed diagonally relative to adjacent portions of said side and end walls and extending downwardly from upper edges of said side and end walls to form with said side and end walls vertical passageways terminating upwardly from said bottom walls, said side and end walls adjacent upper edges thereof provided with openings leading into said passageways, cross plates extending upwardly from said bottom walls and between said side walls intermediate said end and central wall having upper edges terminating in a horizontal plane disposed upwardly from said bottom walls, and said intermediate wall provided with an opening therethrough which is disposed below the horizontal plane of the upper edges of said cross plates.
