STEREOTYPE-CASTI NG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 240,8(39, dated May 3, 1881.
Application filed January 525, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH P. BROWN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stereotype-Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in those apparatus inwhich stereotype-plates are cast upon a wooden back or block and in contact with apreviously-prepared paper matrix, my improvements having for their object greater accuracy and an important saving of time and labor over the devices customarily employed for this purpose-that is to say, where a number of stereotype-plates are to be cast from one matrix.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section, at right angles to the hinge, of my castingapparatus in the open condition of the flask. Fig. 2 is a similar section in the closed condition of the flask. Fig. 3 is a section on the line to w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, showing the flask in condition to receive the molten type-metal. Fig.5 is an underside view of the upper member of the flask. Fig. 6 is a side view of the same. Fig. 7 is a section on the line a: :r. Fig. 8 is a top view, and Fig. 9 is a section on the line g y. Fig. 10 is a side view of the lower member of the flask. Fig. 11 is a section on the line z z.
A may represent a suitable cast-iron frame. The said frame has at its upper portion two notches, B, which constitute the bearings for the trunnions O of the drag or lower member, D, of my flask, D E. The member D has slotted ears F, for the reception of pintle Gr upon' the cope or upper member, E, whereby said members are so hinged together as to be capable of being opened and of being again closed without disturbance of their proper register, and yet be capable of self-adaptation toward and from one another to accommodate different thickness of matrix. The drag D is supported in its horizontal position in front by one or more rests, H, and in rear by a catch, I, which is pivoted to the frame at i, and has an operating-lever, J. y
Projecting rearwardly and upwardly from the frame are other rests, K, that serve to support the cope is its open position. (See Fig.1.)
L is a rectangular frame, whose inside measurement corresponds with the inner boundary of the margin of customary paper matrix, M. This frame constitutes, with its springs N, wrists O, and eccentrics P, the matrix clip or fastening.
One portion, 1, of frame L is thinner than the rest of the said frame, in order to provide an entrance-passe ge or gateway for the molten metal.
For holding the customary back board or blocking, Q, there projects from the under side of the cope E an L-formed curb, R, to which the blocking is retained by means of an eccentric button or clamp, S. The matrix and the blocking having been thus'secured, the cope is closed down and held shut by the hand-screw T upon the swivel-bracket U. This having been done, the catch Iis released by liftingits lever J, and the flask suffered to swing to the position shown in Fig. 4, which, presenting the gateway L uppermost, enables the molten type-metal to be poured into the mold.
Shoulders V or other suitable devices are employed to guide the cope to true register with the drag.
While selecting, to illustrate my invention,
the preferred forms for carrying the same into effect, said forms may, nevertheless, bevaried in non-essential particulars. For example, screws, wedges, or other well-known tightening devices may be used instead of the cams P and S, and in association with a box or flask, whose members are held together by other means than hinges. l
I disclaim invention in the casting-box or flask here shown, as well as in the devices for securin g its members to one another, and for supporting the flask in its frame, a description of these accessory parts having been given simply for the purpose of conveying a complete understanding of the clamping devices for holding the matrix and the back board in their respective relative positions in thebox.
I further disclaim novelty in the several fastening and clamping devices, separately considered.
I claim as new and of my invention In the described combination with the two parts or members of a flask for casting a stereotype-plate upon its wooden backing, the gated matrix-clip L I, having; the tightening device P in one part for holding the matrix 5 immovable, and the curb R and clamps S for holding the Wooden back or blocking in the other part, substantially as set forth.
ELIJAH P. BROWN.
