Description

DRAFTIINGERIANGIIJE AND THE LIKE Filed July 14, 1944 James Nash ATTORNEY.
Patented May 28, 1946 UN IT ED STAT'EZS PATENT OFFICE 2,401,265 DRAFTING TRIANGLE AND THE LIKE James Nash, Milwaukee,- Wis, assignor to Eclipse Moulded Products Company, Milwaukee, Wis., a corporation of Wisconsin Application July 14, 1944, Serial No. 544,934
Claims.
This invention relates to a drafting triangle and the like and more particularly has reference to a finger lift to facilitate lifting and other manip lation of the triangle.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a finger lift for a drafting triangle and the like to quickly and easily pick up the triangle and otherwise manipulate it.
Another object is to provide a drafting triangle with an integral finger lift that may be readily formed therein.
Another object is to provide a drafting triangle with a lifting edge that may also be employed in drafting operations as a working edge.
Another object is to provide a finger lift for a triangle that is not injurious to the fingers.
Another object is to provide a finger lift for a triangle in which the problem of manufacturing tolerances is substantially eliminated.
These and other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter in connection with the following description of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a drafting triangle showing the finger lift of the invention in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken on line 22 of Figure 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section through a grooved portion of the triangle.
The drawing illustrates a triangle I, such as may be employed in drafting, and comprises the outer working edges 2, and the inner edges 3 provided by the central cut out portion 4. The triangle may be formed from suitable plastic material or the like and is preferably transparent to improve the usefulness thereof.
The face of the inner edges 3 of triangle 1 is cut away, such as by machining, to form a groove 5 to provide the finger lift of the invention.
Groove 5 extends longitudinally throughout the face of each of the three edges 3 but may be eliminated at the corners of the opening 4, if desired, as illustrated in the drawing.
Groove 5 may have tapered edges and be of V- shaped cross section with its side walls approaching the upper and lower corners of edge 3. The groove has a depth to receive a portion of the fingers or thumb of anyone desiring to lift up the triangle or otherwise manipulate it.
A sufficient portion of the face of the edge re mains on either side of the groove to prevent deformation of the edge corners and injury to the fingers in use. In addition this face portion provides a good guide surface so that edge 3 may be utilized in drawing operations as a working edge if desired. Problems of manufacturing tolerances are also substantially eliminated by having the outer end edges of groove 5 slightly removed from the sides of the triangle.
The lifting of the triangle is obtained by gripping one side of the same between a thumb or fingers pressing into groove 5 and the fingers or thumb pressing against the opposite outer edge 2 of the side. The groove 5 may be placed in the outer edge 2 with much the same results, although it is preferable to place the groove in the non-working edge of the triangle.
The finger lift of the invention does not require the use of the nails to lift up the triangle, as pressure exerted by the finger or thumb placed over groove 5 will force a portion thereof into the groove to facilitate lifting or moving of the triangle. Since the groove does not extend to either the top or bottom of the edge 3 there are no sharp corners on the inner edge and this eliminates the likelihood of bending the edge corners and deforming the same or cutting the fingers or thumbs thereon. In addition the triangle may be lifted by applying the fingers or thumb at any position along inner edge 3 on either side of the triangle regardless of which surface of the triangle is up.
The invention may be employed with other drafting implements than triangles that are suitable for lifting in the manner described.
Various embodiments of the invention may be employed within the scope of the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, an edge portion, and a longitudinal groove of tapered cross-section extending substantially throughout the face of the edge to provide a finger lift to facilitate lifting or other manipulation of the device, the taper of the groove side wall being sufficient to substantially reenforce the edge in handling and when used for drawing, and the width of the groove being sufficient to facilitate entrance of a finger portion therein for manual lifting purposes.
2. In a triangle or the like having an outer working edge and an inner edge provided by a cut out portion, a groove of tapered cross-section extending longitudinally substantially throughout the face of the inner edge to facilitate lifting or other manipulation of the device from either side thereof with the employment of said groove in either case as the finger lift.
3. In a triangle or the like having an outer working edge and an inner edge provided by a cut out portion, a groove extending longitudinally substantially throughout the face of the inner edge, said groove being outwardly tapered toward the base of the edge with its walls slightly removed from the top and bottom surfaces of the triangle to provide for lifting of the triangle from either sidethereof no matter what side 0 the triangle is on the bottom.
4. A drafting triangle or the like having a portion of narrow Width bounded b substantially parallel edges, one of said edges having a longitudinal groove of tapered cross-section extending for a substantial length thereof to facilitate manual gripping of said narrow portion for lifting purposes regardless of Whichever side is uppermost.
5. A drafting triangle or the like having a portion of narrow width bounded by substantially parallel edges, one of said edges having a longitudinal groove extending for a substantial length thereof to facilitate manual gripping of said narrow. portion for lifting purposesvregardless of whichever side is uppermost, and said groove being disposed centrally of the edge thickness and tapering outwardly with only a slight portion of the edge face remaining on either side of the groove.
