Description

J. BRANSON, Jr.
Ditching-Plow.
Patented Mar. 18, 1842.
AM. PHOTO-LXTHQ. \IU- NKY. (OSBORHE'S PROCESS.)
NITED STATES IMPROVEMENT IN THE SCRAPER 0R MACHINE FOR DITCHING AND EMBANKING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,492, dated March 18, 1842.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN BRANSON, Jr., of the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Ditching and Embankment, and that the improved machine is called Bransons New Invented Scraper; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which the machine is repre sented in perspective.
It consists of a plate of wrought slab-iron,
(marked Ain the drawings,) five feet in length and eighteen inches wide, partially cylindrical in its form, making a curve of about one fourth of a perfect cylinder, to the upper side of which are attached two handles of wood, similar to those of a plow, each three feet and a half long, connected together about two feet from their upper ends (they being marked B) by a cross-piece, 0, two feet and a half long and one inch and a half thick and four inches wide, from the center of which extends a stout horizontal beam, D, similar to that of a plow, over the plate A, which beam is supported at the rear end by an upright, E, also of wood, which is fastened to the back or convex side of plate A by four staples of iron, f f. From the front end of said beam extend two iron rods, G G, one from each side of said beam to the ends of the plate A, and passing through it near the center of the curve.
I do not claim as my invention the scraperplate A, nor the frame consisting of the handles, beam, &c., as these have been known before, when used separately; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The attaching of a scraper-plate, formed in the manner herein described, to a beam and handle by means of the upright E and iron rods G G, so that the upper edge of the plate shall be at right angles to the beam D, and shall not be permitted to turn, as in the scrapers generally used.
JOHN BRANSON, JR.
