YARN WINDING REEL Filed July 8, 194a BY RG5 4 Patented Nov. 22, 1 949 YARN WINDING REEL Albert F. Cossette, Leominster, Mass, assignor, by mesne assignments, to Leominster Tool 00., Inc., Leominster, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application July 8, 1948, Serial No. 37,691
Claims.
This invention relates to reels and more particularly to yarn winding reels having removable spools.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a base having a central opening, a pair of arms detachably secured to the base in the opening at opposite ends thereof, and a flat spool having ends journalled to rotate in the arms, the spool being readily removable therefrom without disturbing the arms, and the entire reel being easily and inexpensively made of injection molded plastic parts.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the new reel parts being in section;
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the spool part being in section;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the base;
Fig. 4 is a broken-away view of one of the arms and 1..
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one of the arms. This invention presents an inexpensively made,
quickly put together and easily demounted reel comprising a base, two arms thereon, and a fiat spool, all of molded plastic, wherein the spool may be removed from the arms merely by lifting.
As shown, the base is generally indicated at and has an edge flange I2 on which it rests presenting a supporting surface It spaced from the free edge of the flange. The base is centrally open to such an extent as to resemble a rim as plainly seen in Fig. 3, and at the end of the opening the same is indented still further into tapering recesses I6. All about the opening there is a strengthening and stifiening depending rib l8 at the underneath side of the supporting surface I4,
The tapering recesses [6 present three-sided edges the thickness of the base material to receive and accommodate arms 20 in upright spaced position. To this end, the arms 20 are provided with three-sided guides 22 tapered to suit the recesses, and by this construction the arms are easily assembled by aligning the guides 22 with the recesses and moving the arms outwardly until firmly seated.
Each arm is provided at its top with a top opening journal 24 for the rotatable reception of axles 26 on the spool 28. The spool is fiat and peripherally flanged or ribbed as at 30. This construction provides a sufiiciently bulky spool of light weight, and the yarn will not be abraded due to complete absence of any sharp edges due to the 2 fact that although the spool is flat it is completely edged by a thick rib.
The spool is easily rotated to ball the yarn and is then removed merely by lifting off the arms. The plastic material is strong and light, and provides an easily made, put together, and knocked down reel of the class described.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A reel comprising a base, a pair of spaced detachable arms secured to the base, a top opening socket at the top of each arm, a generally flat completely peripherally ribbed spool, trunnions on the spool at opposite ends thereof for removable disposition in the sockets, the base being centrally open and in the form of a rim having a recess at each end, the arms fitting in the recesses, and guides on the arms receiving the edges forming the recesses and holding the arms upright.
2. A yarn winding reel comprising a flanged base open centrally and resembling a rim, the rim having an inwardly opening recess at each end, an arm for each end of the base, means forming guides on each arm, the guides receiving the base edges at the recesses to hold the arms in upright position, a spool, and means to rotatably mount the spool on the arms.
3. The reel of claim 2 including a rib about the base opening following the contour thereof at the recesses.
4. The reel of claim 2 including a depending rib at the under side of the base, the rib following the contour of the base opening.
5. A reel comprising a centrally open base having oppositely extending tapered recesses one at each end, an arm for each recess, each arm having a horizontal guideway at the lower end thereof, the guideways receiving the material of the base at the recesses and detachably holding the arms upright facing each other, and a spool journalled to rotate in the arms.
