Patented Aug. 9, i949 OILER Wade Reed, Fort Wayne, Ind., assignor to General Electric Company, a corporation of New York Application December 29, 1945, Serial No. 638,376
2 Claims. (01. 184-65) My application relates to oilers particularly of the type which is adapted to be used on outdoor applications which have to withstand a wide range in temperature and in which the oiler reservoir is made of a material such as plastic or glass which is adapted to be secured to a metallic base.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved oiler.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved oiler having a lubricant reservoir formed of one material and a base formed of another material and to provide a suitableeseal between the adjacent surfaces of the reservoir and the base which will remain effective under a wide variation of temperatures.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent and my invention will be better understood from the following description referring to the accompanying drawing, and the features of novelty which characterize my invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming part of this specification.
The figure in the drawing is a side elevational view, partly in section, of an embodiment of my improved oiler.
Referring to the drawing, I have shown an embodiment of my improved oiler construction in which a reservoir cup I of suitable material, such as glass or plastic, is formed with an outwardly extending base flange 2 adjacent one end thereof and adapted to be closed at the other end by any suitable cover, such as a screw 'cap 3 which threadedly engages this end of the cup. A metal 1 base 4 is provided having an annular pocket 5 arranged over the flanged end 2 of the cup I and is formed with an inturned retaining flange 6 extending over a portion of an end of the cup flange with a sealing space between the base and sealing arrangement with the lower face of the a cup flange 2 and with both the inner and outer side surfaces of the annular pocket 5, thereby forming a resilient lubricant seal between the joints of the reservoir cup I and the oiler base 4. With this construction, the reservoir may change in dimension due to temperature changes and aging, and the synthetic sealing washer l, which has cold-flow properties, will be biased against the base of the cup flange 2 and the sides of the pocket 5 to provide an effective seal even under these varying conditions. A suitable central feed opening is formed in the base 4 and a lubricant feed tube 9 is spun over and brazed, welded, or
otherwise suitably secured in the opening in the base 4 to provide for feeding lubricant from the reservoir cup to a bearing or other oil-lubricated device as desired.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, modifications thereof will occur to those skilled in the art. I desire it to be understood, therefore, that my invention is not to be limited to the particular arrangement disclosed, and I intend in the appended claims to cover all modifications which do not depart from the spirit and scope of my invention. 7
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An oiler including a reservoir cup having an outwardly extending "flange adjacent one end thereof, a base having an annular pocket arranged around said one end of said cup with an inturned retaining flange extending over said cup flange with a sealing space between said base and the adjacent end of said cup, and means including a sealing gasket in said base pocket between said cup flange and the bottom of said pocket and a spring washer arranged for biasing said gasket into lubricant sealing engagement with a face of said cup flange and a side of said base pocket for sealing the joint between said cup and said base.
2. An oiler including a reservoir cup having an outwardly extending flange adjacent one end thereof, a metal base having an annular pocket arranged over said one end of said cup with an inturned retaining flange extending around said cup flange and a sealing space between said base and the adjacent end of said cup flange, means including a resilient sealing gasket of lubricantresisting synthetic rubber material in said base pocket between said cup flange and the bottom of said pocket with a flexible frusto-conical spring washer arranged between said gasket and said base biasing said gasket into lubricant-sealing engagement with a face of said cup flange and the sides of said base pocket for sealing the joint between said cup and said base, means including a lubricant feed tube extending from said base for feeding lubricant from said reservoir cup, and
- 3 4 a cover over the end of said cup awayfrom said UNITED STATES PATENTS base.
