GRAPPLING TOOL FOR JOISTS AND STUDS Filed July 29, 1947 w I a Patented June 7, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,472,500 GRAPPLING TOOL FOR JOISTS AND STUDS Laverne E. Swanson, Manistee, Mich. Application July 29, 1947, Serial No. 764,475
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grappling tools for joists and studs.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a tool of the character specified primarily designed for use by carpenters in rough construction work, in grappling joists and studs and drawing into place sheathing and other building materials.
Formerly, carpenters have used chisels and other instruments as prys in doing this work, but such means is very unsatisfactory and time consuming and far inferior to my novel grappling tool in handling construction material.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tool of this kind that is simple and economical in construction and highly eflicient and durable in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which is for illustrative purposes only and is therefore not drawn to scale:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grappling tool, constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section, taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and Figure 4 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, my grappling tool, generally indicated by the reference letter A, is preferably constructed from a single continuous bar or strip of metal of rectangular form in cross section, and comprises the straight elongated handle I, bent at one end to form a U-shaped grapple 2.
In carrying out my invention, the transverse base portion 3 of the U-shaped grapple 2, is formed with a central elongated longitudinal rib l of V-shape form in cross section, while the shorter side 5 of the grapple 2 is formed with a pair of corresponding laterally spaced longitudinally disposed ribs 6 and I. The ribs 5 and I are arranged in alternating relation with the rib 4, and the ribs 4, 6 and 1 beveled to a knife edge to provide a better grip on the joist, stud or other material.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A grappling tool for joists or studs, constructed from a single continuous bar or strip of metal of rectangular form in cross section, and comprising a straight elongated handle formed at one end with a U-shaped grapple hook, a central V-shaped longitudinal rib tapered to a knife edge, formed on the inner edge of the transverse base portion of the grapple hook, and a pair of corresponding laterally spaced longitudinally disposed V-shaped ribs tapered to a knife edge, on the inner edge of the shorter arm of the U- shaped grapple hook, with the first and last mentioned ribs disposed in alternating relation.
