Description
.April 19, D H, LUST ET AL ARCHERY HUNTING ARROW Filed Dec. 3, 1945 Inventor Patented Apr. 19, 1949 ARCHERY HUNTING ARROW Delmar H. Lust, Chicago, 111., and Benjamin C. Roemer, Tigerton, Wis.
Application December 3, 1945, Serial No. 632,356
2 Claims.
Our invention as described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, consists of an arrow, an object of which is to provide an arrow for hunting large game in which means is provided for a free flow of blood from an animal the arrow shaft has penetrated.
Another object of our invention is to provide an arrow shaft having grooves therein.
A further object of this invention is to provide an arrow shaft with longitudinal ribs providing channels therebetween through which blood may freely flow.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figures 1, 2, 3 and i are elevational views of arrows embracing our invention, each of which illustrates a slight modification relative to one another, and
Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 are transverse sectional views of the shafts of the several elevational views beneath which they are located.
While one embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of our device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claims. And while we have stated the primary field of utility of our invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the fol lowing specification, the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout and in which I refers to our invention and l I indicates an arrow, the shaft l2 of which is provided with a series of grooves l3, 14, I and I6, substantially throughout its length. The purpose of these longitudinal grooves being that when the arrow shaft penetrates into the body of an animal, the outer wall surfaces l1, I8, I9 and 20 of the shaft will prevent flesh from entering the said grooves or channels whereby blood may freely flow either 2 externally or internally or both, thus preventing blood from clotting in the flesh around the wound.
In Figure 2 the shaft 2| is provided with only three channels 22, 23 and 24, otherwise the arrow is the same as arrow I I.
In Figure 3 of the drawings the several channels 25 of shaft 26 are formed rectangular in cross section rather than arcuate as in Figures 1 and 2.
In Figure 4 of the drawings is illustrated a still further modification and in which the shaft 26 is provided with channels 21, similar to channels 25, of Figures 3 and 7, and in which channels 2 are secured longitudinal strips or ribs 28, 29, 30, etc., which project far enough beyond the surface 3| of the shaft 23, to form relatively wide channels 32, 33, etc., between said ribs.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described our invention that which we claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. An arrow comprising a shaft having a plurality of spaced. parallel longitudinal grooves about its outer periphery, and longitudinal ribs carried by said grooves having a portion projecting outwardly therefrom to provide enlarged channels between adjacent ribs.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said grooves are substantially rectangular in cross section.
DELMAR H. LUST. BENJAMIN C. ROEMER.
